Title: The first Viking?
Post by: Jimbo on April 12, 2006, 21:59:08
Hello everyone,
I made this Viking eons ago.  The helmet is made from the silver pointed helmet from the first knight sets.  The horns were  first made from clay, but he took a tumble recently, so I made them from the skull in the western set.  The shoes are Indian moccasins.  The vest and cape are made from clay.  I am not sure where the spear and shield came from.
I sent a picture of him to Playmobil long before the Viking sets came out.

Best regards,

Jimbo

Considering that the 4519 special was the first viking that Playmobil produced,
I think you deserve credit for the vikings, Jim

Too bad they didnt send you a box of them.
You deserved it

I agree with me - you must have had some influence on them.

That design of shield was used with a number of figures.  The 4505 prince which came out in early 1994 was one, the 4519 Viking coming out late 1995.  (Information gleaned from Collectobil.)

The first line shoulkd have read "I agree with meg"  I always agree with me.

He looks GREAT! :)9

The earthy tones in his clothing also make him look more realistic than the vikings produced by Playmobil. ;)

I especially like his clay vest. You're obviously skilled at sculpting in many different mediums. 8-)

Thats a nice looking figure, I like the cape and fur jacket.

He has a lot of mixed parts, mainly from the western theme and I think he probably started out as the trapper in set 3397. The legs and body colour are correct for that figure ( not the arms though) and the dark brown moccasins first came out with that set in 1991, however the print on the legs must of been removed.

The shield was first released in 1986 with set 3329 Knight with squires and was used much later in the new look Knights sets released in 1993. The spear has been around since 1989 with the Native American sets and you must of removed the 2 lugs near the top to hold on the feather to make it look smooth.

So I would say that he was made after 1991 using parts mainly from the mid to late 1980's.

Yes, your right I do spend too much time with Playmobil.  ;D

Thanks everyone for the historical and encouraging comments!

Sir Gareth and farmboy...1991 sounds good to me.  I looked up some copies of correspondence I sent and recieved from Playmobil, and I recommended the viking Dec. of 1988.  I must have rested a bit before I made the little seafarer.  I did remove the paint from the legs as you thought, Sir Gareth.

You can never spend too  much time with Playmobil!
