Title: Our Collection
Post by: Ds dad on January 13, 2011, 02:46:23
I think I have finally figured out how to show my pictures on here, so without further ado here is the part of our collection which is out in the open. Keep in mind I am living my Playmo dreams vicariously through a 3 year old and we only got our first set (4444) in July, so there is only so much I can put on the floor without feeling like I am spoiling him.

The fleet:

So far, I'm pretty happy with this. I gave D the 3286 for Xmas and that is a great set. We have another complete one still in the box which will be assigned to the pirate foes in the next few months.  I am looking at increasing the number of ships this year and will probably add 4290 (the boy is in love with that one) and Blackbeards ship.  5801 is readily available here and at 45$ will probably be added to the fleet too.

The pirates who don't have a home yet:

The opponents:

So far the majority of the opponenets are Bluecoats (mostly 4611 specials rearmed with musketoons) but I have 5 Spanish
 and will also use some of the pirates in the bluecoats to crew the second of our 3286's (after some slight mods of course).  I will look to add the lighthouse and another of the rowboats to get the Spanish up to 10. Once  the Conquistador special arrives here I'll look to see how he looks with them and may add 10 or so of those. We also use the 4444 cannon boat with the Bluecoats as to me it doesn't make sense as a pirate vessel and seems more like suited to shore defense/patrol.
And finally the islands/fortification sets:

I aslo just received a brand new pirate lagoon (3285) and a complete Naval Stronghold (3288)  that I got off ebay. Can't wait to get those open.

That is it, not as impressive as most of what I've seen here but not bad for 6 months work.

It isn't the size of your collection that's important. It's the enjoyment you get out of it is.

It's a lovely collection. Thanks for sharing

Bogro saved me saying it - if you can enjoy life with just one klivky, then you've got a collection!  Your collection is nicely thought through (I agree entirely about the 4444 as a patrol boat or guard boat or one to use for landing troops on a foreign shore) and the photos are great too.  Thanks for sharing and I look forward to more.   :wave:

Hi

So true, I know I have found it better to limit the amount our kids bring to the house (our collection is stored in a barn in the back 40) and they actually enjoy and respect the individual elements much differently (better in my opinion) than if we had them inundated with masses of sets, and I have tried both ;)

I'd say that's a very good collection to have amassed in only 6 months.  You must be a bit excited at the prospect of new pirates coming out next year in Germany (and in what seems like the distant future for the rest of us).  Thanks for sharing!

Well done so far.  We started with pirates when my son was 4 or 5 (how time flies).  We had the Pirate Lagoon (3285) and the Red Corsair ship (3174) to begin with but added lots of Bluecoats and Pirates Secret Island (3799) then Naval Stronghold, and the classic 3286 ship.

While you seem focussed on the pirates we spread our interest to other themes - oh what a slippery slope that turned out to be - and there has been no turning back.

Can I suggest getting a large sea-blue flat double sheet for setting everything out on for play?

Very nice collection, and nicely organised. That's a lot to collect in just six months.

So do you have a 3-way ongoing battle between Pirates, Spanish and Bluecoats (maybe French)? You could easily add some Redcoats as the English, and split the pirates into two factions, thus making it a 5-way battle with 3 nations and two independent pirate groups forming different alliances and so forth.

Lots of fun to be had from the Pirates theme, and it's still going strong.

Thanks all for the kind words and engouragement.  Many of you are absolutely right, the collection is large (but not huge). The hours of play it has resulted in and the joy in my boy are immeasurable.  He literally has not picked up another toy since July (even on Xmas day).  I have not limited my purchases to pirates and have purchased quite a few Romans as well, but Ds interests seem to bewith pirates right now, so I have kept most of the Romans locked away to help keep focus.  He is also my first and I don't know how many toys you can reasonably purchase a child without spoiling them so I am taking it slow.  I'm looking to expand things this year and am looking forward to the new pirates next.

@Playmofirth

We have a large blue sheet for water and two yellow throws that we use as islands.

@Martin

The redcoats are on the way, right now the French and Spanish are allies. But once the Spanish gain some strength all bets are off.

You've got some great sets there,
The pirate theme is a great one for your son to start with.
It is such a pleasure watching children at play, especially when you can play along as well!  ;D

That's a very nice collection of pirates!  As Martin suggests, adding some British redcoats could make it even more interesting. :arrr: :captain:

Very nice collection!

I like your idea of not showering your little one with tons of toys....its true, when there's too many, its hard for the child to stay focused.....I learned the hard way and we are downsizing our toys (not PM though!  :P).

My parents learned that lesson on my brother who was seven years older than me. Then they went to the opposite extreme with me.  :P

Looks pretty darn good.  I know I would have loved that many Pirates to play with as a kid.

Did you happen to get the 4444 at Winners?  I would highly recommend the Lighthouse 4294 and the 4139 Compact Pirate Island.  If I may suggest Indigo/Chapters for the Lighthouse as theirs is $5 cheaper than Playmobil.ca's price.  You can also get a $5 off coupon online if you sign up for their emails.

The pirate lagoon will be definitely add a lot to play and the stronghold can be added to your dock to expand it.

@Wesley,

No I looked long and hard for the 4444 at Winners but no dice. Playvalue has it for 19.99$ I may pick it up from them.  The lighthouse is high on the list of things to add this year, I know Chapters has it for 59.99$, if I don't get it in the US (49.99$ US) I'll pick it up at Chapters.  Call me a traitor but I don't buy retail in Canada unless I have to these days.

Ha, same here on all counts (except the first set was 3185/3352 in October).  It's nice to not be the only one in that boat.  His/our collection also has a mostly vehicular focus so far, but no pirate ships yet.

Your fleet is lovely, and given your son's play focus it sounds like you're managing the pace of expansion very well.

I wish you good retail luck either in the US or locally.  Chapters often sends out one-time, limited window (like, 2 or 3 days, often only in-store but sometimes online too) discount coupons or codes, but I keep noticing them in my email a day or two too late.  Mastermind Toys had a 15% off all Playmobil sale + free shipping back in October, before I'd discovered this place, if it happens again I'll certainly post it.

Couldn't call you a traitor - that's only a wise thing to do.

The only person that would call you a traitor is someone who has been brainwashed or trying to sell you something.  There is not one business in this country (and that includes the government - at all levels) that does not buy everything they can outside of Canada for a cheaper price.  There is no reason they can even remotely say we should by Canadian when they can't even lead by example.
