Dear playmofriends,
first i would like to wish you all the best for 2011. i had a very nice new years eve with my wife and son + family. very relaxed :)
before i start i would like to tell you a little about my connection with playmobil. please excuse any language mistakes.
i was born 1970 in cologne germany. i think there is no better time to be born - in a playmobil context. when all the beautifull first playmos came out i was absolutely amazed. as my parents also really liked playmobil i had a great time with lots of great presents till 1982. then i stopped playing with playmobil and concentrated more on being a teenager ;)
when my son was born in may 2010 i thought : i must show him the world of playmobil !
after i bought just one set ( farm ) i was hooked - again
thanks to ebay we have some nice playmos at home my son hopefully will like when he is 4.
i don´t care if he will not like them because i like them a lot
i had the vision of this little playmo-world in our house so i reserved some space for it. i work in media / film and rebuild the old farm of my grandpa plus some extra space for studio / work. i found a place in our house and now there is my vision:
i want to build this playmo-area with all my childhoods stars : the pirates, the castle and knights, the farm, the trains, the western world + after discovering all i missed in the last 28 years - the vikings !
i have reserved the space of one room in a corner of my studio and would like to finish the project in the next 12 months. i really want to make it look nice like in the old playmo catalogues - that´s why i choose to work with dioramas . all dioramas together will end up in the "world" .
today i started to photograph my collection and would like to share some nice parts of it. i will not photograph everything but the stuff i think is nice / special.
i just started and have just a few pics but i promise to post more in the next days.
this is really just a small collection of some playmo i like and i saw some "collections" in the net which totaly blow me away - but i think after all it´s worth sharing the story and the pics.
before i forget:
my father was a big playmo collector in the 1970s and i will post some pics of his stuff nearby ( thanks to my new collection we rediscovered our playmohobby and searched for every little playmo he had in his home :) ). expect some serious 200+ nürnberger stadtwache playmos 8-)
so here is the start and like i said i will just start with a few pics but will keep up to post more nearby. thanks playmofriends for this great place in the net !
all the best

Thank you for sharing these Skywalker. Those are indeed some nice little Gems you have there.

There you go teasing me with the hunting party again! Thank you so much for sharing you history and your love of Playmobil. I have no doubt that your son will love it, especially with how much it means to you. I really love seeing your beautiful dioramas and pictures of your collection, especially the older sets. Many of them are quite rare and it is fun to see someone with them :-[

Oh, how jeolous you're making us :hissyfit:! Thank you for sharing these rare beautiful pieces of art with us! :thanks:

Hi
Great classic collection . I too need to find a super horse power train. Oh what a beauty.
I must say in your last picture it looks like the guy is either clubbing the horse or the horse is trying to stop him from clubbing the hunter :hmm:
Rasputin "The Mad Monk"

Yes, quite jealous :o But it is nice seeing another Playmofriends member enjoying a set we want....in many ways! We can live vicariously through him...
-
thanx playmofriends for the feedback of the pics. i had a hard decision how to go on with the collection. i had some rare playmo items on my wishlist ( like the 4052 ) also i collected vintage star wars over years but was not getting the fun out of it like with the playmos. so i started to sell the star wars on ebay. i am glad that i made that decision.
rasputin: the thief is going for the hunter and the horse is trying to stop him - of course....
-
Wonderful photos and a great start on your collection. I have the large locomotive I got used. It is missing one of the front flat pieces but works well. Maybe later this year I will finally get my trains out again and set up somewhere.

Very glad that you decided to go with Playmobil (even though Star Wars is cool), but you can't go wrong with PM :D

That 4123 is what makes Playmobil so special - it's a set which no other toy manufacturer would ever think of producing.
-
Playmofire: so true ! so many cool details. it is the perfect combination of good design ( steck ) and all this great details....
-
I would like to share a first look on the "world" and would really like your opinions how to go on. i put the main parts in the place i think it makes sense. the castle will be on a hill on the right there will be a medieaval-wood-etc-world. unfortunately the castle can´t be as big as i planned because i want to keep it "playable" at the moment i think of putting some parts of the world in some hills to gain more space.
the pirates are getting a port and the vikings a town above the diorama i finished. i did the farm first and it´s a bit too large but i can´t change it anymore.i`m looking forward to your feedback and ideas... :hatoff:

Just came across this post today, don't know how I missed it. :hmm: Thanks for sharing all the pictures. I had never seen the inside of the caboose either and it lived up to my expectations. The farm is super.
What a great project, Skywalker! It looks like you are well on your way with your display. You have a great space for it!
Joe
-
Oh wow!! This is great!! I'd like to do the same someday but on a table surface...
Great job!! Can't wait to see it all set up!!
-
:o Very impressive!!!! (my son says it's cool). Not to sound old-I am only 26-but does it hurt your back to play on the ground? :-[
It is very wonderful as it is, but perhaps you could include a space for a forest? The large Playmobil trees always look nice :D
Will you have your world set up all the time?
Well, it is fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing :**:
-
Joe: Thanx !
Wolf / Playmoholics : when i was a child i allways played on the floor with my playmo. i just want to keep it playable and all the areas should be reachable. the space in the middle would be great to have for more dioramas but for now i keep it like this.
Playmoholics: i have a lot of trees collected over the past months. still not enough...after buying them on ebay here and there i found out that they are sold on the german internet store for a reasonable price ( 3 trees - one large , one middle , one small for 9,90€ - when you order some shipping is free...)
to gain more space i made one decision. i will have 2 big dioramas for the vikings ( one is nearly finished as you might have seen before..) . those will be very easy removable to make more space for the western world. so it will be either vikings or western and i have enough space to make both parts of the world perfect.

Hi
Just out of curiosity how did you photograph the last shot? Is the white paper curved at the back ? you have nice lighting as well, very little shadows or at least they all go in different directions
Rasputin "The Mad Monk"
-
Rasputin: yes the white paper is curved. i have a canon eos1000d + metz af 48 flashlight. the light comes 60% from the flashlight.
-
hi everybody,
update on the castle diorama... this is the tunnel construction + more work on the hills.

Wow, skywalker. This is an awesome project! Thanks for sharing this process with us; i may have to steal some ideas from you. ;D
-
wow! that is a huge space! is that your palymo room or your living room has been invaded????
You have a very nice collection..... me wants! :'( :'( :'(
-
bonniebeth: i see it more like exchanging ideas :) ...just when i think about what i could make for a zoo project...oh no stop thinking about more worlds...arrrrgh... no serious - it would be fantastic if you find some inspiration for your zoo project :)9
tonguello: the good thing about moving to the country is : you have more space ! as i rebuild the farm - actually it´s looking a bit like the playmo farm from the 80s  we rebuild a big part where all the animals used to live. there is now my studio and working area. as i work for film / media as a special effects artist i sometimes need a bit space and it was no problem to reserve some place for playmo. also my son can hang around and i can have an eye on him later when he is in kindergartentime. in my job i sometimes have to wait 30 or 40 minutes for one take to render out so it´s great to use that time to work on the dioramas
-
great pictures! keep them coming.
-

:yup: At the moment I'm keeping it all on one level for simplicity's sake (and also because i am from very flat country, no hills at all) but I am thinking in the future of having the zoo be a little more multi-level, with over-head viewing areas and such, so I need ideas!
-
Great that is Skywalker!! A true craftsman you are!
-
It looks absolutely wonderful  I can't wait to see it finished, or is this one of those projects where it will always be a work in progress (as it is always improving)? :**:
-
Thx everybody !!
playmoholics: like i wrote in the introduction - this is a project i want to finish over this year. i will have parts that can be removed and this also keeps the possibility to change some things. the hole display will content the viking world ( one half is ready ) the castle + medieval town / medieval sceneries ( hope to finish the castle this weekend ) pirate world ( half ready , the port diorama is next ) farm ( ready ) 2 trainstations (ready) + western world which can replace the vikings - if the train is more in use. and the train that will go around the display. all the playmo is there - the task is to build the missing parts of the dioramas . it took some time to find a start because i wanted to have a real solid wooden base. i had to make some tests with the trains because some parts are higher as others and this is a bit of a problem for the trains but the problem is solved :**:
-
errrmm...did i say all the playmo is there....no way there is so much missing
-

Is this going to be accessible for your son to play with as well? Or is it more of a dad thing and he can just look from a distance?
-
Wesley: this display should be absolutely playable for my son. if he likes to play with the farm i can just take this part out and he can play with it in his room - when he wants. or play on the hole display. the castle is now very solid and he can hold up anywhere - nothing will smash. at the moment he can just watch as there are too many little parts that are super interesting for him. the older he is - the more he can explore. as there are some special items, i have to check if these parts will be displayed just when i can have an eye on his "battles" - i will see.
it would be cool if he likes to build a diorama for himself one day, because you can lern a lot about working with different tools and of course it´s a very creative process.
-
p.s. as i was a kid my father build a lot of buildings for playmobil with thick paper. i do not remember that i destroyed even one house. i just played with it...
-
the finished diorama ( 90 % ) is in the custom gallery "skywalker castle diorama" . i also posted a making of in the diorama section.
-
I just read the first post of your thread closely (LOL - must be ADD) after looking at the pictures previously and skimming over the text. Anyway, your story pretty much parrallels mine with getting Playmobil in the 70's (although it wasn't as easy to find here in Canada then - nor now) and then getting out of it and then when the first born was on the way making sure there was plenty of Playmobil to play with.
-
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Skywalker, as well as your marvelous creations! :)
