Hello my friends,
This seaplane was made using the top of the hull from the speedboat in kit 3041. The fuselage is made from pine wood, and the wings of plywood. The engine has stainless steel exhaust pipes. The craft was influenced by the plane flown by Porko Roso in the Japanese movie by that name. (That is an animated movie.)
Best regards,
Jim
-
Wow, fantastic. Nice use of the speedboat top there, and the stainless steel exhausts are a great detail touch.
-
Firstly and most importantly: FANTASTIC !!!
I really love that craft!
But it's actually not a seaplane; but a flying boat (I think) as it's the hull itself that floats. It reminds me of the early models of the Interbellum years ...

You're quite right, bogro, it is a flying boat. Seaplanes landed on the sea but only with floats (the equivalent of the wheels for land-based aircraft) in the water, while the flying boat had the hull in the water. Then of course there was the weird British Short Mayo system where a flying boat carried a small mail-carrying seaplane on its wings to give the latter greater range.
Here's a link to it:
http://www.planefacts.co.uk/cards/short/pages/short_mayo_jpg.htm
which also nicely shows the accuracy of James hull design.

It does, doesn't it?
as a side note: I allways thought that the Mercurius/ Maya combination was actually rather brilliant!

Yes, but still weird! :) Dinky used to make a model of it before the war and maybe afterwards, too.
-
I remember that one!
There someone who had brought it in at the Antiques Roadshow ...
-
Nice plane :D
-
Any chance of a photo or two from other angles? I'd love to see the engine and propellor.
My dad was an Air Mecanic in the Navy in the 1940s and I still have his handbook for maintaining flying boats - amazing stuff. They carried anchors and had watertight compartments like any other boat!
Apparently NASA looked at the Mayo when they designed the 747 Shuttle carrier.
-
Thanks all, for the nice comments!
CountBogro and Playmofire, I did some research on the "seaplane" title. It seems, so they say, that floatplanes, and flyingboats, are both seaplanes.
I didn't give it much thought before though. I was an aircrewman in the U.S.Navy during the sixties for a short time. (Vietnam) I was in a land based patrol aircraft, but the neighbor squadron flew the big P5M flyingboat. We called them seaplanes. The U.S.N. also had seaplane tenders ...large ships that serviced the seaplanes at sea.
Dan..I think I can get more photos. My boy has the plane. I was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy, as was your Dad! Neat stuff!
-
Hi Dan,
Here are more photos...The prop is laminated as you can see. I removed the engine for a clear picture of it. Also here is a picture from the aft end. The funny looking dude is Porco Rosso, the pilot of the plane.
Ciao!
Jimbo
-
I must say that I like your plane more and more!
It's really beautiful!
Bogro

Many thanks for these additional pictures, Jimbo. You have a wonderful attention to detail, from the correctly laminated prop to the very Italian looking pilot.

OK, Gordon, that does it !!! ... :(
As an Italian and a former flying boat pilot for the US Coast Guard, I think that this has gone far enough !!!
Italian pilots are handsome, dashing fellows ... ;)
They do NOT look anything like Mr. Bowell's porker mutant !!! ...
I just felt that I needed to clear this up once and for all !!!
I like the seaplane, Jim ... But "Porco Rosso" Hmmm ... :hmm:
All the best,
Richard

Sorry Richard. It's only when looking closer that I noticed the nose - I had been basing my comment on the natty linen suit, the dashing sunglasses and the luxuriant moustache. :)

No apology necessary, Gordon ... :)
I didn't notice the nose at first. But, as we all know Italian noses are usually quite difficult to miss, so I was startled to see something that I was not expecting ...
However, I am interested to read Mr. Bowell's explanation ... ;)
All the best my friend,

Richard, Gordon, and all...
The movie, PORCO ROSSO, (a Japanese animated adventure) is a story about an Italian flyer that was cursed somehow into looking like a pig. After many daring good deeds with his faithful flying boat he got his good looks back, as well as his childhood sweetheart, and lived happily ever after!
I couldn't find a suitable picture of the animated Porco to send.
(I'm Swiss Italian)

Hello, James ...
Hmmm ... :hmm: Swiss Italian ... Well that explains everything ...
My grandfather was Swiss Italian. He was from Locarno (http://www.lagomaggiore.net/old/uk/citta/locarno.asp)!
How about a "happy sequel" to your fabulous Flying Boat custom? I don't know about everyone else, but I would love to see the handsome, dashing Signore Rosso flying away in his splendid seaplane with his beautiful childhood sweetheart! (Sorry, I'm an incurable romantic ... It must come from my grandmother who was from Napoli (http://www.na.infn.it/Images/Napoli.html) !!!) ... :)
Thanks for your reply, Jimbo !!!
All the best,
Richard

Former police officer... former flying boat pilot... is there any job you haven't done, Richard? ;D
I love the Porco Rosso custom! Made me laugh out loud when I saw it.
I've never heard of the story so I googled it and found this illustration. :)

The seaplane looks fantastic too.
Thanks for the close ups of the propeller and other parts. Great stuff, Jimbo! :)9

Thanks, Sylvia ...
I clicked on your pic (http://www.wingsee.com/ghibli/porcorosso/characters.html) and was so impressed with the story that I went to Amazon and ordered the Porco Rosso DVD (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001XAPY2/qid=1145989479/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-9203133-9030542?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130) ... :)
Thanks again and all the best,

Ah, it works in Richard's post. :)
-
thank you Sylvia
Great job Jimbo. Keep up the good work
-
I believe it may be based on Miyazaki's animated film "Porco Rosso"
-
Thanks for the pictures, Sylvia... Now I want to build more airplanes!
Jimbo

Hello, Jim ...
Thank you. Thank you for showing us your marvelous custom seaplane and thank you for your really great rendition of my new hero, "Porco Rosso" ... :)
Yes, I just finished watching the DVD! Michael Keaton is absolutely perfect as the voice of "Porco Rosso" and the other characters are just as wonderful in this magnificent animated film!
The seaplanes, the story, the characters, the scenery ... Everything is academy award quality!
And, there are many more beautiful seaplanes to create (as well as some very interesting personalities)!
Thanks again, Jim, for introducing us to this splendid cinemagraphic work.
All the best,
Richard

Hello, Sylvia and everyone else over there ...
I just checked ... Porco Rosso is available on DVD in the UK at Amazon.co.uk (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BW7I52/qid=1148476509/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/026-1925283-9236453)!
PS: Your kids will love it too! ... ;)
Yep ... I'm now a bonafide Porco Rosso fan ... Thanks to Jimbo ... 8}
All the best,
Richard
-
Has anyone else seen this fantastic film that Jimbo intoduced us to?
And, James ... Are you going to make some more Playmobil scaled seaplanes from this marvelous movie?
I would love to see mi-chi work his magic on creating Gina's Hotel Adriano out of Playmobil's SystemX !!!
-
Hi Richard,
I am a Miyazawa fan.
I have a CD Set of about 12 films and Porco Rosso is one of them.
They are all in Japanese, with subtitles.
We just havent taken the time for Porco Rosso, yet.

-
Hello, Meg ...
Amongst Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli fans there seems to be those who prefer either what they call the "subs" or the "dubs." Personally, I have always preferred "subs" or subtitles. However, with this "Porco Rosso" film, the Disney dub with Michael Keaton is, in my opinion, excellent. And, preferrable to subtitles.
I have watched the trailers in Japanese (with subtitles) and I really do like the dubbed voices from Disney much better.
Since you already have the "sub' version, it will be interesting to read your opinion after you watch it.
This is my first (and only) Miyasaki film. I have not even seen "Spirited Away" which, as you know, won an Academy Award.
Looking forward to reading your "review."
All the best,
Richard

Hi Richard,
I am thinking about making at least one of the Porco Rosso aircraft. Actually they are all great subjects!

That would be GREAT, Jimbo !!!
Also, could you take some "work in progress" photos so that dummies like me can try to emulate your beautiful creations?
All the best,
Richard

I really like the Mama Aiuto Gang's Dabohaze ... ;)
-
Richard...
Do you know if the DABOHAZE is a copy of an actual aircraft?
I am not having much luck finding a three view drawing of it.
I checked Italian and German sea planes to no avail.
Well maybe I can "wing" it. ;D
Thanks,
Jimbo
-

Hello, Jimbo ...
Here's a pretty good page on the seaplanes ... Click HERE (http://www.wingsee.com/ghibli/porcorosso/planes.html) !!!
I can also do screen shots from the Porco Rosso movie, so that you can have 3 view drawings.
All the best,
Richard

This link might help, Jimbo.
http://www.seawings.co.uk/
Go to reference material, click on flying boat plans then to Italian mc99
-
Well done, Gordon ... BY THUNDER, I THINK YOU'VE FOUND IT !!!
And, Jimbo, after you've gone to "references" and looked at the mc99 in "Flying Boat Plans' ... If you want to see what I flew for the US Coast Guard, take a look at the "Grumman Albatross" in the "Photo Gallery." ... :)
Great site, Gordon !!! THANK YOU !!!
All the best,
Richard

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, RICHARD and GORDON!!!!
What great references! Those flying boats are BEGGING to be made into Playmobil flying machines.
RICHARD, I like the Grumman Albatross. I saw a few of them when I was in the Pacific with the U.S.N. I was aircrew on a Lockheed P2V.
Thanks again, happy landings! ;D

Ah ... the P2V Neptune. Now that was a tricky plane to fly. I saw one do a flip as we were on approach to Gitmo NAS. The runway there is built out into the ocean on a jetty. We figured that since the wind might also push us into into the drink, we might just as well land there. So, we took a voluntary wave-off and came back and landed in the water. (One of the BIG advantages of flying an amphib.) ... ;)
Happy landings to you as well, OM,
Richard
-
This was a really GREAT thread! ...
I was wondering, Jimbo, if you have had any time to create any more sea planes from Porco Rosso?
With the introduction of the new Playmobil Flying Boat, there should be lots of customizing opportunities!
I can't remember ever being so excited about a new Playmobil product ... :inlove:
I read something about the new sea plane being a "Limited Edition" and I felt my heart fall. Surely Playmobil would not limit the release of this wonderful Flying Boat to only their German customers ... 8}
Would they ... ???
Andi did an excellent review of the new seaplane. Click HERE (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2128.0)!
Now the looooong wait begins ... :toot: ... :zz:
All the best,

Good going, Meg! The subtitled versions are best. American voice-overs introduce their own interpretation of the characters and script-writers dumb-down the stories to help Americans unfamiliar with Japanese culture understand better (yet, most of the stuff "explained" is something any half-educated American could figure out).
I watched "Spirited Away" both subtitled and dubbed and noted how "hyper-sweet" the American actors are. The Japanese actors tend to be gruffer. Also, the American actors, especially the famous ones (Billy Bob Thornton stars in Princess Mononoke) insert their own spin into the characters because, well, when you're a famous actor it's all about you!

Sylvia, thank you very much for keeping all these memories!
It's always such great fun to re-read these old posts.
Wonder if Jimbo ever made any more custom seaplanes?
There's also been some speculation about Miyazawa possibly making a Porco Rosso sequel.
-
Hi Richard,
No new seaplanes yet.
New Porco Rosso movie would be great. Found my Porco Rosso klicky the other day, got a chuckle out of it.
Best regards,
Jimbo

Hello, Jimbo!
