Title: Hello from Canada (and Happy Holidays)
Post by: Ds dad on December 24, 2010, 14:19:25
Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on Playmofriends for a while and finally decided to bite the bullet and join. I was first introduced to PM as a child when we used to visit family in Greece. It was not readily available in Canada then so I sort of lost touch and waited impatiently for my own kids to come. I started buying Playmobil for my 3 year old in July while at the Funpark in West Palm Beach. He has a very serious pirate obsession and has not put down his PM in the last 6 months.  In that time we (I?) have managed to accumulate some serious PM some of which will only be opened tomorrow. While I don't consider myself a collector I find myself saying things like "We don't have that . . .".  Glad to be here and looking forward to some fruitful PM converstations.

BTW a special Kala Xristougenia to the gang in Greece

Hello and  :welcome: from Louisiana! Bill's right, it's ok to just enjoy playing with playmobil, no matter how old you are. When I first went back to collecting as an adult, I was embarrassed and tried to hide it, but now I just go with it.  ;D
Having a child, you have a perfect excuse!

:welcome: Welcome from the U.S.. It was difficult for my husband and I to admit how crazy we are about Playmobil, but it is really comforting to get in touch with others who feel the same and have the same issues. Look forward to seeing pics of your collection. Happy holidays

A warm welcome from the Netherlands, Ds Dad!

Which themes are you collecting apart from the Pirates for your son...or are you one of those "any blue (or pink) box is good type" of guys *grin*

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. So far it's mostly pirates for us although, when given the chance, D has chosen the Egyptian soldiers, Cossack special, one of the wolf knights and the gladiator/tribune blister. In one of my closets I have hidden away most of the sets from the Roman theme.  I'm looking to get the trireme. catapult and warrior on horse to complete it but no luck yet.

Hi Ds dad... welcome aboard and greetings from BC.  First Pirates, then Egyptians, Romans, specials and blister sets? It sounds like you are quickly become a "serious" collector!

Winners had some Roman sets earlier in the season; maybe a store near you has a few left?

I hope you have lots of fun here!

@Bluewizard

Thanks for the welcome. I managed to pick up the arena, 3 siege towers and the commanders tent at Winners all for really great prices. Of course I only managed it because of stuff I had read on Playmofriends so thanks to whoever started the Winners post (Wesley?) and a special thanks to Cachelote for his invaluable threads summing up the pirate sets. I would still be trying to figure out where to start without those.

You're welcome.  I'm glad I was able to help someone.

I never did find any of the seige towers here, sadly.  It was the figures that came with them that I really liked - especially the Asiatic archer.

Really? The towers were everywhere here as was the arena. I looked high and low for a 4444 with no luck and I made the mistake of thinking i could come back for a second commanders tent.  Of course when I did it was gone.

The 4444 was here only once and that was pretty early on.  I was actually there at the store when the guy was putting them on the shelf so I grabbed one.  Only Home Sense here got the arenas and only two of them, at that.  The tents were at Winners but no seige towers - and trust me, I was going pretty much every single day on the way home from night class.

We still have a veritable herd of Brachiosauri and lots of the Wedding Pavilions here.

Ds dad, you did great at Winners!  I never did see the tent set (which I would have bought one or two of!) and I left the 4444 ship for later - and it was gone of course.  I did get the one Siege Tower set that I saw.  I was really tempted to buy a second Arena set but I just couldn't see storing it let alone setting it up one day.

Wesley, our in-town Winners sold out of all of their Playmobil long ago but the Winners/Homesense out in Langford might still have some left.  I will have to get out there soon to have a look.

Ds dad, so where abouts are you? Out west like me and Wesley?

No, I'm in Montreal.

Are there still a lot of independent toy stores in Montreal?

Yes there are. When I got interested in PM I did a search on the PM Canada website using Montreal postal codes and found about approximately 30 locations that carry PM in the area.  Not including ToysRUs and Indigo/Chapters.  Not all of those are toy stores (some are bookstores and carry PM because it is educational) but I'd say that about half are.
