I have already ordered nickel tracks (LGB early order special sale ;D) weeks ago but the guy from the train shop called and said that LGB has recevied so many orders that it will take a good while before they will be able to deliver.

Hello, Bogol and Customizer ...
Do you both think that the nickel plated track will stay cleaner than the brass track?
And, is it nickel plate over brass or steel?
Richard
-
Interesting... I wonder how it compares to the brass track in terms of price. More expensive, I'd wager.
-
As well as collecting playmobil I also collect LGB Trains. At present my outdoor layout has Aristocraft stainless steel track but I intend to swap it over to the new LGB Nickle silver. It will be more expensive than the brass but it hardly ever needs cleaning and should be a lot more conductive it also looks more realistic.

I almost forgot about this thread... my new nickel tracks arrived quite some time ago. They look very nice and shiny. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find out about how they are made up, Richard, and I don't want to cut them up to find out about the interior! ;) They are a bit harder to put together and disassemble than brass track but that also means they will stick together better while in use. And yes, they are more expensive than brass, e.g. a straight nickel track 600mm will cost about € 8.60 while the regular 600mm is about € 7.30.

Hello, Bogol ...
Thanks for the info on your new nickel tracks !!!
If you have a magnet, please see if the tracks are attracted to it.
If the tracks are attracted to the magnet, then they are probably nickel plated steel.
If the tracks are NOT attracted to the magnet, then they are probably either nickel plated brass or maybe even a solid nickel alloy.
Do the nickel tracks feel heavier than the brass tracks ???
I am hoping that LGB used a nickel alloy, rather than a nickel plate, as nickel plate may wear off over time.
Thanks again and all the best,
Richard

Hi Richard - the new track is nickel-plated brass. At one of the edges the nickel wore off a bit and I could see the brass underneath. It's also not attracted to a magnet.
-
Thanks for the update, Bogol ...
"Nickel plated brass" ... Hmmm ... :hmm:
It would seem that the big advantage over "plain brass" tracks would be that you might not have to clean them as often and you might also get better conductivity. And, of course, they look more like the real thing.
Have you noticed any difference in the performance of your trains, Bogol ... ???
Since I am really OK with the appearance of the "plain brass" track, I am more curious about any improved performance (or reduced cleaning) that you may have noticed, Bogol ...
Thanks again and I await your next report ... :)
All the best,
Richard

Hi Richard!
The performance of the nickel tracks is very good but so far I don't see any noticeable improvement as compared to brass track. Now I use my brass track almost exclusively indoors and I have very little corrosion. Whether the nickel version is easier to clean I don't know yet. I have them now for only about two months compared to my oldest brass tracks which are some 23 years old.
Looks are indeed a matter of taste. The nickel tracks look very pretty but they don't actually look "real" because they are so nice and shiny. I guess the most important test will be how they will perform outdoors. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience in this area.

Thanks again, Bogol ...
OMG, I just realized that my brass track is also more than twenty years old !!! ... :o
The time goes by much too fast ... 8}
I really appreciate the time you have taken to tell all of us about the LGB nickel plated track.
You have saved me (and maybe some others) from having to experiment with it.
I think that I am very happy with the brass track. And, again, thanks to you, i do not need to give any more thought as to whether or not I might want to use the nickel plated track.
All the best und danke,
Richard

Hi All
I am still in two minds about the new track, I didnt realize that it was just plated.
I am also a member of the LGB Club so will check out their website tonight and see what they are saying about the new track.
As I will be starting afresh I would like to make sure I am going in the right direction and getting the best that my money can buy.
So the main points to think about are
1. Is it more realistic
2. Is it more conductive
3. Does it need less cleaning
4 Is it going to flake off over a period of time as Bogol states there is a worn piece showing the brass underneath.
5. Will LGB stop making the brass track at some point in the future.
Regards
Craig

All very good questions, Craig ...
-
I have posted a question on the LGB Web site regarding the new track and will report back with my findings
-
It will be very interesting to read what you find out, Craig ...
-
Hi All and Richard
So far one reply from a chap in the states. He has just received one point or switch so cannot possibly answer just yet
-
Waiting patiently for your next report, Craig ... :toot:
-
Hi Richard
And so far 50 viewings and only the first reply. You would think that some rep from LGB would have left a comment. I even added the questions I placed on this web site.
-
Hi Richard and all
Great news Mr Jonathan Meador who is the product manager of LGB of America has replied I have given him this link. So hopefully a man of his knowledge will be able to answer all our questions
Kind regards
Craig

One guy replied to all my questions after he had visited this site. And basically said that the track is more realistic, needs less cleaning, is better conducting, they will continue making brass track for the foreseeable future. And also stated that it dosent flake.. As he kindly pointed out to me as was mentioned earlier in this thread it was just a worn piece. Also that as there is only 70 people on this web site it is not very big. I havent bothered going back on the site since
-
Thanks, Craig ...
It's obvious from your report that the nickel plated track is superior to the brass track. The cost is also not prohibitive. I think that it's only about a dollar more per section of track.
Thanks again for finding out about the new LGB track!
All the best,
Richard
