Title: Why haven't they ever produced brick-coloured Steck?
Post by: Bolingbroke on October 14, 2010, 18:41:28
You know what I mean: the brown-ish variety. There's lots of castles around Europe in that colour, and I think it would have resulted in a prettier set. Plus it would also have made collectors buy more copies of the same set.

Brick for houses probably came in after the castle ear, maybe more Tudor than Plantagenet in English history terms.

i guess if you leave the normal grey steck to dust or have it for many years it would turn brown .....

I agree, I think brick was a later invention and those "Castles" built in brick are really fortified houses, not castles.

Hurstmonceaux in Sussex is a good example of what I mean, it was built in brick in 1440, after the era of real castles, and would never have been built this way if it was expected to survive a siege.

In Holland there are many brick castles, even from the early middle ages. There is no bedrock in Holland. Only sand, peat and clay. So if you wanted a castle back then, you were stuck with brick.

Here in Southern Scotland a number of local castles were built using red sandstone, this being one of the local stones.

This is a 13th century castle.

Could you name that castle for us Elaine?

It may be originally 13th century, but the sides display window holes, so I think it's been extended and modified since the original build.

It is called Caerlaverock Castle and is in Dumfries and Galloway.
Yes, it has been added to over the centuries Martin, in fact there is a 17th century residence inside the walls.  It's triangular shape makes is quite unique around here.
There was also an earlier castle nearby.

Here is a link for it:
