Excited to receive the 4888 Weihnachtskarussel (Christmas Carousel) today.
I don't often manage to get new (as in newly released) Playmobil so thought I'd do my first review.
A good sturdy box
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/4888%20review/4888box.jpg)
With an inner box for the contents
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/4888%20review/488boxcontents.jpg)
Here are all the pieces set out
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/4888%20review/488pieces.jpg)
I thought it would be straightforward to put together so didn't really read all the instructions.
I started with the stickers - all 30 of them! Not my favourite job I must admit, but my tweezers came in very useful
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/4888%20review/4888pieceswithstickers.jpg)
especially when I realised that I'd put all 6 of the little oval stickers on upside down
I hadn't seen the symbol in the instructions showing which was the top and the bottom :-[
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/4888%20review/instructions.jpg)
Luckily I managed to remove all the stickers without any damage and replaced them the right way up.
Putting it all together after that was quite straightforward. One thing to remember is to have all the little sleighs going in the same direction which in my excitement I didn't do at first!
The klickies are fairly ordinary, no new hairstyles on these, and I've seen the lady and the boy before. I hadn't seen the two girls though, so these may be new designs.
When the children are seated it looks very well - you can see I have changed the sleighs round by now
It spins in the same way as the playground carousel by turning the knob at the top. The top seems to wobble down a bit when spinned fast, but altogether the carousel is very stable.
Altogether I think it is a lovely set and is a good start to my Christmas Market!

HA HA!
I love that last picture! ;D
Great set Elaine,
Thanks for the review. :)
-
Great review. Not a set I am likely to get myself but it looks like it has nice play value
-
Excellent review, Elaine, and the kids seem to be having a great time!

Hee! Loverly! I really really want the Christmas Market, though- if you get it I want a review!
-
Wow, what a wonderful set Elaine! Wished I had one, looks like fantastic set!

Very nice review of a lovely set Elaine!
I'd get this set just to use as a Christmas decoration, I think it's lovely. I'm glad the adult stepped back from the carousel before it started spinning, or she'd have got a sleigh in the head.
I'd like to see this in other colors for use in a Fairground theme.

Excellent review :)

An excellent review, Elaine, and I was glad to read that I'm not the only one not to read instructions! Before now I've had to remove and replace stickers or take parts off and refit them correctly.
On the question of stickers, I wonder why Playmobil don't use decals which are easier to position exactly?
The last photo is superb, Elaine; a great closing shot for your review. (I can also guess the favourite game for some yongsters - knock the bystanders over with a passing sleigh!)

Hey thats a great set, review and pictures Elaine!!! Many thanks for showing us this nice set which I 've never payed attention to before!!!

8} 8} 8}

Great review Elaine!! I think this is on our list as well I will be sure to forward this review to my wife for approval *grin*
-
Very nice review! And you did a beautiful job placing the stickers!
If that set makes it to the US I think I will get it. I know that I really really really want the Christmas market set.

sorry if I bring a "military" question into this thread, Elaine :P
can you please let your adult klicky hold the gold 'shield' ? (I think its too small for me to make Korean shields from them ;)

I would never have thought of that!

Thank you for the nice review! I like it. As I like the whole christmas theme.
I plan to go for a window display this year...
And don't worry about the stickers. I guess they really could make it clearer in the instructions next time... ;)
best,
socrates

very nice review elain :) it's for sure added on my list ;)

Beautiful set, but am I missing something? Would it really matter that the shield stickers are upside down? They seem fairly random enough that either way up is fine?

I suppose it wouldn't really have mattered, except that I'd would have known! :-[
The only difference with the small oval sticker is that it is a lighter blue at the bottom, to echo the lighter blue at the bottom of the large 'shield' type decorations.

thanks Elaine, wasn't it heavy too?!
hey...they are quite big afterall :)
(they need to be much bigger for trimming (Korean shields had inverted 'V's cut at the top for peering at 3-D arrowheads :P)
but might be good for older chinese shields ;D
(too bad the bigger 'shields' dont have handles)
I would never have thought of that!

My weighing scales won't register such small weights (under 1g) but I wouldn't have thought it was any heavier than any of the normal shields. (I used a round viking shield for comparison)
The large 'shield' can be held also, photos show holding it using right hand piece, and left hand piece, but the klicky does overbalance using the left hand piece unless it is held higher.

Side view shows it held using left hand piece.

Hope this helps too!

I LOVE this set!! It would go great with the Victorian series that my daughter is getting for Christmas....now, if you don't mind me asking, how much is this set? Also, where does one get one? I'm in Canada and I'm not sure if it is just overseas that has it or not.... :)
-
A great looking set and a great review, Elaine!
I have the old playground carousel and I just love the way it spins round 8} 8} 8}

I think it is only available in Germany at the moment, I got it on ebay de. It cost me 11.99 euros. I don't know if that is expensive for it, but I really wanted it! :-[

thanks Elaine
so there are handles on these large shields too!
looks a bit short for a korean shield...which prompts me to wonder....there must be such shields too in other playmo sets! hmmmm ;)

Junior suggested we could make up an army of Father Christmas figures carrying- these 'shields' - a scary thought!

I'm thinking that's not a bad price at all...I was just visiting the German Playmobil site (I believe) and it's $20 US BUT its $40 to ship to Canada!! Geez, I thinking I'm gonna have a heck of a time in getting it!
