Title: We should get together in Oregon
Post by: Ronastoo on August 31, 2010, 06:00:48
It's midway between the Washington folks and the northern California folks.
And Tim has a chocolate store in Oregon.
So, those are excellent reasons for having a west coast meet.
Anybody else interested?   :D   :D   :D

(And if we do it in October maybe Tim will invite us to his house to see his Halloween castle.)   ;D   ;D

Chocolate and Playmobil, what else is there that matters? :cloud9:

It would certainly be fun to have a get together some time. Martin's Playmobil room is pretty amazing. If he ever gets his table cleaned off he can do displays 3 to 4 times larger than anything I've ever done. Eugene Toy and Hobby has their Anniversary Sale one week every October with 20% off Playmobil. That would be a good time to hold a get-together. I just cleaned up my Playmo Closet and have a whole shelf of stuff I could trade if we wanted to make it a trading event too.

I'd love to help host a get together with my Playmoden as a focal point, but will need to get organised in plenty of time to make it feasable.

I usually work weekend shifts so I need to book time off in advance with a minimum of 3 weeks' notice. That also gives me time to clear the den's table (by throwing everything into boxes and hiding them) and maybe set up something to play with. Right now, as Tim knows, it's a sorting surface with a lot of sorting still not done.

I'll find out what dates in October the Eugene Toy & Hobby Store do their October discount and aim for a possible weekend date for a get together (they are closed Sundays). We may buy nothing between us, but the opportunity will be there. Learning Plaace is another store very near me which does discounts, I'm not sure if they do any in October, but they open every day.

My house and Tims's are either side of the I5, for my house you come off onto Beltline (the 569) and it's about ten minutes drive, so anyone who is interested, work out how long to get to that turn off the I5 to see if it's viable. It's a suprisingly long way!

HI

Would you be doing a house visit or a convention. It seems with October just around the corner the convention is a little unrealistic. I would be interested in helping with a convention if we could get a hall to do dioramas. I have an Aunt in Grants Pass that is about 120 miles to the south. For me to do a house visit it is 550 miles to Martins

I think we should try for a house visit get together this year and see how it goes. There are only maybe 5 or 6 attendees i can think of that are close enough. If it goes well we might look at trying a public exhibition in a year or two.
Martin, Eugene T&H usually is open on the Sunday of their sale week, and also Sundays in December.

Ah, I just rang them and they said the Sale runs from Monday to Saturday, and the week isn't yet fixed, but that was only a staff member ahd he may not know everything. The staff may not be told the dates until 10 days ahead, but I need to know before that to book time off. The sale is usually in the first half of October.

I therefore suggest one of the following three weekends as a possible date: 9-10th, 16-17th or 23-24th October. If the sale is set for a date not covered, Tim or I cold get details of the sets on sale and buy anything people want ahead of time, and hand it over when we meet.

I have a spare room with two single beds and en-suite bathroom, plus plenty of floorspace if people have air mattresses and sleeping bads and don't mind roughing it a bit to save on Motel costs.

Anyone interested (Ronastoo, Warrior of Toys, Tiermann, Rasputin, Martin Milner, Justindo? Gepetto? Andy R?)  post in this thread, and when we have numbers we can take this to PM for further details. I appreciate that 550 miles is no small drive (up to 10 hours each way) and requires some thinking about.

My best guess based on past experience is that the sale would fall the week of the 11th through 16th. I will try to stop in on my way to work later this week and ask. Just having a few people ask may be enough to get them to set the dates.

Sorry guys, but for me Oregon is just under 3,000 miles away. :P
So I cannot come out. :'(

Me!  Me!  Me!
I want to see Martin's Playmoden and Tim's Halloween castle!

If we find out when the sale is then we can decide if it's a good weekend to get together.
I think I'll drive down after work on Friday.  But, I'll need to ask for Saturday off.  Now we just need to know which day I'm asking for off.   ;D

Hi all,

I'd really love to come and I do have relatives in Salem, but don't think I can make it in October.  If it was during my fall, winter, spring, or summer break, I could probably come.  For me, it's about a two day drive each way, although I could always fly.

I stopped into Eugene Toy and Hobby and talked to the owner this morning.
He said the Anniversary sale will be October 3 through 9. They will be open on Sunday the 3rd for the first day of the sale. So we could go for the weekend of October 2nd and 3rd and do house visits Saturday then shopping on Sunday.
Or we could do October 9th and do both on the same day, or do some of the  visits on Sunday the tenth. Selection will be better at the beginning of the sale.

It looks like Rona is the only person who can visit from outside Eugene, so Rona if you're still interested would you like to name a weekend and I can try to book a day off?

If I don't book the dates tomorrow during my shift then I'll just have to chance it that I'll have some sociable time off in my schedule on the chosen weekend.

October seems to be a popular month for vacations at the library where I work.  It looks like I'll have to work on Saturday and then drive south for five hours and get to a motel about 10 p.m.  I'd have all day Sunday for shopping and playing and then drive back on Monday.   I think that means Oct 3 since that's the only Sunday of the sale.
Will that work for both of you?
Isn't there anyone else that wants to come play with us?

The 3rd works fine for me. I will have square dancing in the evening but probably wont have to be there until 7PM (unless I end up teaching the class again this year - then it would be 5:30)
Has anyone talked to Gepetto? I don't think he's been on, busy in real life?

I PM'd Gepetto a while ago but got no response, I think his time is greatly occupied. I'll try contacting him again.

I'll book Sunday 3rd off work so as to be free all day. I look forward to meeting you Rona!

wish i could join you but we will be on vacation during that time.  i think one of the best things about forums is having such great friends that we would otherwise not ever know.  i know that i was so excited when rasputin and his three boys came to visit to pick up some extra playmobil things i did not want to keep.   have a great time.  kaethe

It's getting close to Oct 3 and we haven't mentioned our shopping/playing adventure recently.   Are we still planning to get together?   Does anyone else want to join us?

I am planning on it. I got the Eugene Toy and Hobby anniversary sale postcard today. They will be open 12 to 5 on Sunday.
So we can start there for our scheduling. Are you still planning on driving late Saturday Rona?

ARGH!   I keep forgetting to look to see if there is something in "My Messages."  Sorry!  Sorry!  Sorry!
I'm planning to drive south on Saturday and then drive more south on Sunday to get to Eugene.  It would be great to start at the toy store.  What are our plans after that?  (Let's make them sound very exciting so that everyone will wish that they had come to Oregon to play with us.)

So 12 at Eugene Toy and Hobby?

Well first we go to the amazing sale where we get all the Playmo we could want for 20% off plus another 5% off the total purchase - all without sales taxes. Then we go to see the Amazing Halloween Castle Diorama of Wonder and perhaps arrange some Playmo trades. Then we go to the Humongous Playmotable of Doom and see any displays that may have been set up. Then maybe make a Mama Dragon Visits the South short Playmostory. Then we have some sort of dinner. Then to relax we play with our Playmobil.  ;D

Sounds good! I know Rona has to hit I5 north by 7pm Sunday, so we have seven hours together - better be sitting in a diner by 6pm for dinner. How about Sizzler off Gateway Street?

I have a slight alternative suggestion. If noon is a little late for a start for anyone, I'll be working away at the Humongous Playmotable of Doom Sunday morning, so anyone who wants to drop in anytime from 9am would be welcome. Tim, you know how to get here, Rona I'll PM you my address. No need to confirm or anything, just turn up if you're free and bored. I'll set out for ET&H about 11:40am.

Right now my display is still a work in progress. That is to say, I've done some thinking and planning, and, er, tidying. Just a little tidying. Mostly thinking.  Mostly.  :-[

So, ahem, by Sunday I'll have a clear 5'x5' table area, possibly larger, and a huge pile of dark steck ready to build a Halloween Castle, together with skeletons, mummies, ghosts etc. to decorate it with.

Yes we did meet and it went well. I was unfortunately not well this weekend, but managed to do about 2/3 of what we had planned. Martin and Rona did the rest themselves. There will be a few pictures to post here eventually.
I bought two advent calendars, the school workshop set, and a ghost pirate special at the shop.

Lots of fun had by all!

We met up at the shop which was having a sale, and at 25% off I got a couple of sets which I would probably otherwise have passed over - 4225 and 4251 from the Fairytale theme that will go with the castle I got a while ago.

On to Tim's house, where we admired his Halloween Castle. I won't reveal much more until Tim does, but it's much bigger than last year, covering a whole table with a haunted grove, wizard's workshop, children's theatre and lots of other good stuff. Many wonderful touches and secrets and a huge amount of imagination has gone into it. Plus hot warm glue.

We did some trading, and I learnt about the grab bags that are occasionally available from Playmobil US. I got a couple of Roman siege towers from Rona, plus several smaller useful parts and figures that she didn't need, and from Tim I got some rare sets, in exchange for which so far I can only put up a yellow steck house and a recent blister pack. Rona and Tim also did some trading. I really need to get my trade items organised.

Onto the chaos that is my Playmoden, sans Tim who wasn't feeling well. Rona acquired a single Musketeer special from me, poor return for the siege towers et al.

My wife joined us and we went for dinner at Marie Callender's, I had baby back ribs and New York Style Cheesecake, and I'm pretty sure Rona and Beth ate something too, but the important thing is I had baby back ribs and New York Style Cheesecake.

After dinner Rona had to set off on a 5 hour drive back North, while I was chauffeured home to gloat over my new acquisitions.

I did!  I did have something.  It was delicious.  And Beth had a whole pie.   ;D  ;D

We had a fun time.  I'm sorry that Tim wasn't feeling well and didn't get to have the complete experience.
(I hope Tim is feeling better now.)

I have some photos on my camera but it's still packed somewhere.  I'll find it and post some pictures in a day or two.  (I'd do it sooner but I want to prolong the excitement.)

Beth had a whole pie.   ;D  ;D

Just to clarify, Beth BOUGHT a whole pie to take home, because it was only a dollar or two more than having one slice in the restaurant. 3/5 of the pie is still in our fridge, mostly because I don't like the flavor.

BTW, I may have forgotten to mention I had BabyBack Ribs and New York Style Cheesecake.

Turns out we didn't take many pictures, but my wife got one of my New York Style Cheesecake. Well... the remains of it, on the square plate with the fork and a dab of leftover.

Prior to that I had Baby Back Ribs, but the waitress took that plate away before we could get a good picture. I'm not sure why there are four other round plates in a stack on the table, I can only assume Rona and Beth are responsible.

That's Rona's arm on the left, and mine on the right.

I just remembered what my wife ate, I think it had leaves in it.
