Hello
Should I be oiling my Western train (4032)?
It is making a horrible noise, but it is infact the carriages and the actuall Loco itself. Is there a way to keep these quiet as well?
I want to keep my train running smoothly, so if it does need oiling or whatever, then where and how? I would guess that it has never been done in it's life ::)

Hi !
Do not try to use mineral or vegetarian oil for your train.
The main effect will be that all dust will be collected in the oily areas.
To reduce the noise and for improving the roll conditions you may try silicon oil.
But be careful with your clothes....

How about graphite? That doesn't cause dust to stick.

I´ve never used it, I would expect that it will work, but if you are using it on the floor in the livingroom, it may cause grey areas on the carpet.
This can cause trouble with the housewife....

On the coaches a little 3 in 1 oil on the will do. Turn the coach on its side and then put a drop into the hole where the axel is, then spin the wheel. Repeat on the other side of the coach. Which type of loco have you got then I can advise you. Is it an electric one or a Radio Control one and if possible the actual loco.

Damo, if you have an electric train with brass railroad tracks, you should really get yourself the following LGB service items:
5001 Lubricating Oil
5001/9 Lubricating grease
It might also be a good idea to get the tool kit so that you can take your locomotive apart and maintain it properly.
CAUTION: Just use a very small amount of oil and grease. A lot of oil and grease is almost worse than none at all!
All the best and have fun,
Richard

This looks great, Richard!
But the question is - where do I get it ???
There isn't anything on ebay UK, and I have already asked in my local model shoop, and they don't stock anything to do with LGB or G scale :(

Richard is right, that's the stuff to use. LGB equipment is expensive, but worth every penny. You get what you pay for. Just remember to be very sparing when you apply it. As others have said, too much lube will attract dirt and cause damage to the trains, or bad performance.

My God!
That stuff is expencive - 10 euros for some oil (temp out of stock)
and 40 euros for the maintenance kit! :o :o I can't afford that! :'(
But I suppose if it is good as you say, Glooby but perhaps it is something to save up for 8-)

You might want to try the oil the radio control car people use on
the wheels of their cars.....Just a thought :)

Thanks, Jimbo - that might be a bit of a cheaper alternative :)

Hi
Welcome to the world of G scale, not for the faint of heart ;)

When I rebuild an engine I use "Super Lube Teflon Grease" on the drive gears, it never dries out or hardens and engines I've rebuilt 5 years ago are still running fine. I use it on the wheel trucks as well, but VERY sparingly, just a very small amount works and it does not attact dirt. You can find a 3 oz tube for about $5 and it will last a long time. Radio shack used to sell something similar, but now all they seem to sell are phones.
