Title: Our Exhibition Poster
Post by: skypurr on July 19, 2010, 23:32:32
Thought you might like to see the poster I designed for our Playmo Exhibition (the Village Hall Committee decided on the name in the end!)
I am quite proud of it.  I wanted the klickies to stand out without any other background and I found that taking a photo with a white background came out as a different colour when I tried to put it on the poster so Junior showed me how to enlarge the photos in 'Paint' and go round the edges and surrounding area in white, trying to get it to a 'pixel perfect standard' (his description of what I did!  8})
It took me ages!!  In the end though I felt the result was worth the time it had taken.
Busy still sorting out everything for the display - and panicking that I'll run out of time.  Unfortunately it's Produce Fair week this week so I'm baking as well!
I'll post photos when we have the displays set up.

Here's the poster ...

Hi

Those Klickies sure do stand out  :)9 Great looking poster and lots of luck for your exhibit . oh how I wish there were things like this in our area. Maybe some German Museum in San Francisco would host it  :'(

Please do show lots of pictures of your display and any others at the show.

Thanks for your good wishes Ras.  Actually we (Junior and I) are doing it all!
It was suggested as a way of raising money for the village hall and I jumped at the chance to set all our Playmobil up.
I haven't as much as a lot of collectors here, but do have things from a number of themes.  We are planning to do a Modern Street with shops, church etc and including a park, A Victorian scene, Fairy Tales, Airport, Medieval, Circus, Jungle,Space, Western and Pirates plus a couple of small scenes (providing I get them all sorted out in time!).
We intend to spend the week before setting up - it's amazing how many members of the hall committee and friends have offered to help - I think it's just an excuse to come and play!! ;D ;D

Great poster, Elaine, and great work by Junior.

You could probably overcome the problem of the white background if you used a Kodak Gray (their spelling) Card or equivalent.  You stand this up at an angle of about 45 degrees in front of the display take the exposure from it and then focus on the scene, keeping the exposure the same (most digital cameras have an exposure lock).  Everything should then come out right.

I'd never heard of this Gordon, but what a good idea.  I'll look out for this for next time I need such a background - Junior suggested a green background so the klicky would stand out for me to go round with white.
I mistakenly didn't crop round the jester first and it took me about 3 hours to fill in the white background only to realise that I need not have filled in as much as I did!  I cropped the lady klicky photo first and it took a fraction of the time.

The gray card itself is only 10ins by 8ins and so it isn't the background.  Because you have a white background, this causes the camera to think the light is brighter than it is and so it gives less exposure, making the colours dull and muddy.  Take the exposure from the gray card and lock it in the camera and the camera then thinks it is looking at an average scene and so the colours come out right even with the white background.

Great Poster, Elaine !!!

I want to go and "relive my childhood" ...

My only criticism might be to add, "bring your grand parents" ... (http://www.gardenwargamer.com/images/oldman.gif)

Hi

Well actually Richard that is a great critique. If the Grandparents do go with their grandkids and see what I assume will be an amazing diorama the kids will surely want some of their own Playmobil. Now we all know how easy most Grandparents give in to the pressures of grandkids so off to the toy-store for hopefully the start of a new collection  ;)

Many thanks for all your comments and good wishes.  :)9
We start setting up on Monday - I'm really looking forward to that but can't help panicking about where everything will go.
Running about a bit like a headless chicken at the moment though, trying to do lots of things at once and not achieving a lot.  8}  ::)
As we speak Sandy is transfering the 500 + catalogues and cd's that Playmobil have sent me, along with loads of Posters - May have some posters spare after the event if anyone is interested.
Will post pics of the setting up   :camera: if  a) anyone is interested
                                                            and
                                                            b) I have time to spare!
Must dash ... got some customised Western buildings to put together!  :)

Great Poster Elaine appart from Gordon's excellent suggestion if you use a slightly smarter Photo editing program then Paint it would have taken a lot less time using something like a Magic Wand or such.

In other news, HOW DID IT GO???

I know it's only the day after but I am really curious.

Well it's all over and has been a resounding success!
We only finished 2 hours ago and the displays are still in place for a little while.
It was very hard work setting it all up and due to lack of time some things were not as I wanted them to be, (Friday night sandy and I worked all throught the night and finally finished at 8.15am!) but everyone who came was amazed and impressed.
I'll post pictures soon, I've taken loads so need to find a way to show them with a link - anyone know how to do that?  Not sure of final figures but think we've raised about £600 for the hall - not bad for a small village.
In the car home we were already planning next years event...!  Need to have some sleep first though!

Hi

You could set up a account at a picture hosting site similar to ImageShack or PhotoBucket and just use it for the event only. Then you could give us all one link to the account name and we could see them.

Rasputin "The Mad Monk"

That's what I meant about putting a link to photos, so thanks for that Ras.
I've had a very busy couple of weeks since the exhibition finished - only managing to dismantle it all a week after it ended, because I had to demonstrate quilling (paper filigree) at a local craft fair for three days over the weekend after the Playmo event, then had to finalise the organisation of a produce and craft fair at our hall today.  Now that it's ended I can get down to sorting out all the photos and post them.

That's an excellent result, Elaine.  Congratulations.

That sounds like a good idea Gordon.  As it was it took me a week to set everything up.  (I must admit that it didn't help that Sandy had to have a cataract op. on the Thursday and had to go back for a check up on Friday, so I had to leave things to drive him to hospital).
On the Friday I arrived at the hall at 3pm and left at 8.15am on Saturday morning!

Elaine :)
