Probably because they don't want to have box numbers that say:
90056173... That would be a long box Number,
Keeping it at four is just easier.

And Playmobil may not have that many sets out... :P
But the numbers would still be 5 or maybe 6 digits long.

WarriorofToys is almost certainly correct. When it comes to numbers, most people's brains have trouble coping with strings of more than four or five.  For 27 years I worked in computing and found that remembering strings of three numbers was easy and I can still remember lots of them, even where the same number was used for different purposes, e.g. centre (school) 103 was Bedale School and subject 103 was Art and Design, and we would use the codes in conversation or internal notes instead of the actual centre name or subject name, such as "Can you replace entries for 125 for centre 027 with subject 126".  Later on, subject numbers became four characters, some with an alphabetical character added at the end and centre numbers became 5 digit ones and the effect was pretty well immediate, you referred to a computer printout to check what the number stood for!  With time, you remembered the codes of the subjects you were responsible for and the numbers of the centres which were particularly good or troublesome, but that was all.

It's the same with 'phone numbers, people group them into strings, generally of no more than five numbers.

hmmm yes but all the numbers start with the numbers 3,4,5,7 they don't start from 1,2,6,8.....etc they could still have 4 numbers if they used these other numbers

It is a cool link...
But it doesn't seem totally correct.
Somethings I recognise, but there are things wrong.

It says: 5001-5999  Victorian Dollhouse & Belle Epoque purple-boxed assortment
But I have a 5725, and though it is in that range, it is a castle. ???

The Collectobil information was written quite some time ago and the introduction of 5xxx numbers for sets such as the 5725 came after that.

The Collectobil information was written quite some time ago and the introduction of 5xxx numbers for sets such as the 5725 came after that.

5725 appears on Collectobil, as well as several other 57XX series sets.

The writer could have added that 57XX sets are North American releases, but didn't get round to it.

When Playmobil ran loiut of 57XX numbers they continued with 58XX, but this was after Collectobil stopped being updated,

The 50XX series seems to be reserved for large sets amalgamating other smaller sets.

very intresting gordon ihaven't seen that either !!!!so when the numbers finish from each section they recycle them the numbers for the blue boxes "3001-3999 " i think they are little for all the playmobil because most of the playmo are in this section .the victorian items are very few it shows many numbers there "5001-5999" all the victorian items are 48 i counted them and 5 are the last series with the 5301 house and it's furniture why they don't use the 1,2,3 as first numbers?
