Title: Buildings in my castle project
Post by: Wolf Knight on May 20, 2010, 17:54:05
Hi all,

In this thread I will only post single pictures of the building structures for my castle/medieval city project. I know people do not have the time to go through long postings and replies and might miss a good idea, so here are the pictures so far!

main building for the castle where the king's resides
(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/5/20/baldthar/f_grpn3qx9m_836ddba.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)
I've changed the windows from the yellow/green ones of 3666 to these glass ones (thank you Gordon for your help), you'll find out why later...

City Guard Headquarters
(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/5/20/baldthar/f_grpn3qxam_92b11e3.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)
This coat of arms may look a bit royal but (in my story) it represents the importance (crown) of the city (fleur-de-lis) for the king and his people. The city is like a crown, a homeland...therefore it must be protected at all times....

the church....
(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/5/16/baldthar/f_grpn3qw7m_3e70b7d.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)
still working on it...

Up until now I was not very clear of the groups that would be the dominant ones in this project, but now i have finalise these groups.

Stay tuned as next will be the steward's office...

A very good way of presenting your castle project, Panos, then when all is ready everyone who has followed this thread will be able to understand and appreciate the finished work.

Hi all,

This is, as promised, office of the city's steward!!! The steward is appointed by the king and has administrative and legal duties concerning the wellfare of the city! He has a small guard at his disposal, men he has personally chosen, to safeguard the wellbeing inside the city...

The coat of arms is the yellow tower and green background from the 3666 castle (which resembles the Zirndorf coat of arms) and the steward is of course the royal man from that castle. I chose this particular coat of arms because, in my idea, the tower gives a feeling of a strong structure, or infrastructure, that was created to, and is well mantained to, provide protection for the people of the city.

Hope you like it!!!

And thank you for the explaination on Zirndorf's coat of arms, I was not aware of this fact before... :)

Just the sort of house the steward needs with a balcony to address the people and read out the lord's new edicts.

Excellent designs and the kings quarters are impressive . A proof of how great Steck is and how insignificant and rubbish system x and the latest monstrocity are when compared to steck. Steck is by faaar the best for any serious playmo building design  Only steck can do this !!!!

Sir Knight your work is very inspiring and look forward to see your fortifications also . Will you go double or single steck height ??? after much thought i think single height in at least 3 out of 4 sides ( excluding the kings quarters side which is 3+1 levels high) is the proper one , allowing for seige towers to attack, ladders to be used etc etc etc .. Steck is the best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed Giorginetto,
Make a large walled section (a keep) then make the rest of the city one wall heigh.
That way you can stage battles,
Or have a little wargamming fun with friends. >:D

I know then next wargame I have with my friend will be a siege,
And that I will most likely be on the assault. ;D ;D ;D

Unfortunatelly my friends do not share my Huge playmo enthousiasm... They think its ok but there are more important things for them to do...Despite this, thay are always hapy to look at my collection...but not play with it...

I just got back from a whole days work... (woke up at 7.30...got to work at 8.20 and stayed ther until 14.20...than I had to drive at the other shop to pick up one of my colleagues and then deliver to a client outside town, to another province..2 hours drive to get there, one hour spend at the client, 2 hours drive back... I really want to sit down and start building more but its so frustrating all the energy and creative thinking gone.. :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit:.. I need to go to work for four hours tomorrow morning and then getting back, clear my mind to start planning and building... I do plan on showing you the gate this weekend though.... ;)

Well, its simple...if there is no beer or larger to drink, even heavy metal guys will ask for tea...so the question that comes forward is: Can you imagine how your life would be if there was no amstel?     (or any kind of beer for that matter) Its a very funny conversation actually! http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/Istanbul/Sights/WesternDistricts/CityWalls.html

But especially this is great:

http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/Istanbul/Sights/WesternDistricts/yedikule.html

It has the old ceremonial gate of Byzantium. Many an emperor and foreign official went through that gate.

If you come from outside the old city walls through the newer Ottaman gate next to the fortress, you will see a very nice stone double headed original Byzantine eagle. Hmmmmm, nice.

Great spot that, nice surroundings.

Of course you´ll need more steck after seeing this.

Fantastic Ali Baba!! Thank you for the links!!!

You know, the city where I live (born and grew up) Thessaloniki has fortifications like this. The White Tower (a historic landmark) that stands in the waterfront was actually part of a bigger fortress protecting the city! And this is a huge round tower like the ones surrounding Constantinople!!

The Tabard Inn is the name of an inn in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.  A tabard is a coat without sleeves, a sort of over-tunic which a herald might wear or a lord's man-at-arms.  In Chaucer's book the tabard is an actual tabard hung outside the inn.  Ideally, what you need is the body of a knight with the same printing on front and back and then hand it out on a pole.

Gordon that is indeed a brilliant idea  :)9 :)9 :)9!!! And ties very well with my memories of Canterbury!!! The original Inn was situated in Southwark, London, if I remember correctly, right?

Any clues as to what the Tabard Inn's  tabard had on it?

You are right as to the location, Panos.  As to what the tabard had on it, if anything, I don't know but when next in town I'll call in the library and see if they have a copy and try to find out for you.

Thank you for the links Elaine!!! Much appreciated!!! They are indeed a great help!!! Especially fot the building process with steck!!

It seems to me that the tabard was depicting a shield on it and two crosed weapons behind it... A the magic of interpretation!!! Who knows if it was really designed this way.... Unless there is a reference to the book...

I believe that others hold this title already George!
If you browse ''photography&graphics'', ''collector's corner'', ''customs gallery'' you'll be able to find loads of wonderfull steck castles from other members...

Now that I have the inn, I'll work on the West Gate again... I need to add an extra wall and a few more fortifications...and maybe a few more key buildings...

---edit--- i just realised...I still have not post the picture with the tabard hand outside the inn in this thread... Got to work on it tonight!!!

A very interesting thought in my steck thread with reference to steck fortifications was putting the gat at ann inner enclosure allowing fortifications on eitehr side and a narrow entrance with eg boulder throwers on top, hot oil pans etc etc , its worth considering in my opinion to have a castle entrance not at the same levelas the main wall but a couple of steck lenghs back .... Anyways, look forward  to your designs Sir Wolf , are you planning to build a huge mediaval set up ( with 11 3666s something magical would emerge i am sure !!!)

That is also a good way of fortifying your gate more.
To me, just about anything that will help you attack the backs of your enemy
Is a valuable addition.

Not only will the indented gate help you attack your enemy while they batter at your gate,
But the enemy will have a much harder time getting any siege engines to it.

There is one problem... The indented gate,
In addition to a corridor with a second gate will stick very far out into your city.
From the looks of it it will reach about 4 or 5 steck lengths in.
Though it will make it hard to attack,
If they ever did break through they would already be far into your city,
Which is VERY bad.
The thing you most want in a siege
Is the enemy to be as far away from the center of your town
(Or the next wall) as possible.

This gives you more room to fight in,
And more room for them to have to go through to get to this key point.
If it is 4 or 5 lengths in already they can attack your armies flanks,
And get to the center of the city faster, and gain control.

You may want to choose one or the other,
Or curve your corridor so it loops to another part of your city.

Curving the corridor has certain advantages to it that may well hinder the enemy.
If you have two gates that are quite close together
Then you can curve the corridors so they open up on to the same space,
Maybe 3 or 4 lengths apart from the other gate.
That way the enemy walks into a choke space.

You also want to separate your walls from the ground.
That way if the enemy takes control of the ground
(By getting through the gate)
You can still attack them from above,
And perhaps evacuate the walls above
Before your men on the walls are caught in a pincher movement.

This can also hinder your defense,
Say if your walls are taken the enemy can attack YOU from above.
So always keep reserves stationed at the ladders (or stairs) just in case.
Reserves can also help KEEP the enemy on the walls,
And stop them from spreading through your city.

Good points and arguments WoT ... Well i think if i manage to build a two wall fortification I am confidence with the number of catapults and klickies i will put on it will b every hard for any arm to come as near as the second door .... ;D

Hmmm...
Ok,
So you have a regular Playmo wall right?

Like the ones in my picture.

Bt what if you had platforms that reached 4 spaces,
Then you could have walkways 4 lengths long.
And it would be a super thick wall. :)

No worries, with the steck i have accumulated i reckon i shall be able to make far more modest than these but some decent sized creations . These pictures is the proof that steck is by far the best for mediaval castles, awesome designs , cant get over them . Steck rules, playmobil needs to bring it back, create new mediaval houses and castles with 4 way connectors and taller towers etc  and not this clip junk !!!! Steck, Steck , Steck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a thought

Yes I was struggling a lot with the idea of which torso to put....very few had a crest on both sides....
I'd prefer to keep the inn simple... I like the ''Royal'' title but not really crazy about it for some reason....Then again I could use the 3652 trumpeter but his tabard is separate from his torso...have to glue it on.

Oh hold on a minute..... the tower knight in this set (3652) has the coat of arms on both sides....yes that will be the one!!! although its black and not easily spotted....hmmm

Hey!!!! This will do even better!!!!! 30 00 4640 - Hunter, blue suit, shield on chest (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2000%204640)
Yes definately the one this time!!! I already have four of these klickies and one spare torso...I'll put it to good use!!!!

Thanks Gis for get me going!! All this post is really write as you thing along....

Waste for the 4583 torso though...the signpost does not fit the arm holes, so I had to cut them a bit...now the arm does not hold on... Oh well sacrifices are necessary I suppose...

The inn sign looks good, Panos.  Look forward to seeing the final one.

It was also common to have a brush outside the inn, like this:

You could have one in a torch holder:

on the other corner.

Brainstorming ideas...

How about painting some spare arms/legs/head with Metallic Silver and Glueing them on. (From the pictures you should have enough spares *wink*.

That way you can make a statue (much like the one from the Museum 3449) but wearing the royal livery. Then it isn't a total waste.

I suggest you follow the whole conversation rather than just picking up the tail end, it starts on page 5 of this thread with this post from Gordon:

The Tabard Inn is the name of an inn in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.  A tabard is a coat without sleeves, a sort of over-tunic which a herald might wear or a lord's man-at-arms.  In Chaucer's book the tabard is an actual tabard hung outside the inn.  Ideally, what you need is the body of a knight with the same printing on front and back and then hang it out on a pole.

Next time though Sir wolf you could cut the little nob at the end down a bit instead of the torso.
That way you can still use the torso later. :)

On of these nobs cost 10 euros on ebay Warrior!! Its a shame to damage it! Not that I would sell it, but if I had to pay that much for it, I'd prefer to damage a torso than this one...  ;)

How much does one of those Hunter Knights cost?
Or even the Sentries?
