Title: The castle that will never be
Post by: flatcat on April 23, 2010, 17:00:54
Hi,
This is the last you will hear of my castle project (thank goodness I hear you say!) ;D

After being let down and disapointed with every castle steck lot from ebay and running out of money (spent around £150) I am now giving up and here are a few pics of how it looked so far before dismantling and packing up in the loft for that certain day that may come in a few years time.

Damo this was beautifull...Sorry you had to dismantle it...I liked the seperation between the palace/court and what appears to be a training ground...I really liked how you hang your tools on the wall!!!

Do not dispair, I was in your place once and now...I cannot stop myself getting more and more steck pieces!!!

It will feel really great in a few years when you unpack it and reset it again!!! All good luck!!!

Wolf Knight is right - the time for your castle will come.  Even while it is packed away in the loft, you'll keep thinking of it, almost subconsciously, so that finally you will unpack it all and build the castle which is perfect for the parts you have.

Thanks, Panos I am glad you liked it. Hopefully I can complete it someday but i have just run out of money and time (it's been in the lounge for a couple of months and Mum's fed up with it)

I'm glad you noticed the tools - This castle was designed to be National Trust with open rooms, cafe, gift shop, and real life knights reinactments practicing outside in the outside area with logs around it. There was going to be another castle building in the second area but I ran out of steck :(

Thanks, Gordon you are right as I just haven't got the time or imagination at the moment :(

I have to agree with Panos and Gordon flatcat, you have a nice set of pieces and what you already constructed is good, you will come back to this with new energy and be pleasantly surprised at all the pieces you have.  :wave:

As everyone has already said flatcat, it maybe time to take a break & put your project on the back burner for awhile! While it's out of sight out of mind, you will see things that will spark your interest in it again, like a huge eBay job lot of Steck parts, or maybe the fruits of Richards meeting with yours & everyone else's continued voting, the dream may come true for a reintroduction of the Steck line as a reward for all of our efforts along with a classic collectors edition 3526 fire engine set for me (BTW, I love those trucks if you haven't noticed!) :love:! One can only hope & continue to vote ;)! You have done extremely well with what you have to work with, so don't give up, just relax & wait!

Thanks, Gepetto and Bill!

I was thinking of selling it all but then decided that that would be a stupid idea as I know I would always regret it and I know I will someday have a great idea and a despirate urge for steck 8-)

No :0, don't sell it, just calm down a little while & someday you'll say, I sure am glad I kept all of this stuff  :cloud9:!
BTW, a while back before you joined this forum I found a super collection of Steck for sell on eBay in New York state where a serious collector was selling his entire Steck collection in plastic storage tubs! He was quite well versed on everything related to Playmobil Steck! There were many 3666, 3123, 3665, 3888, 7420, 7288, 7421, 7200, 7758, 7761,7144, 7175, 7122 Steck sets, & the seller knew about each item! There was only one problem, it was so large he would not ship it anywhere, & required the winning buyer to pick it up at his location! It was a popular topic back then, & we were talking about forming a plan of buying it as a group & find out who was closest that could make the journey to collect it, but it didn't happen. I'm trying to remember what it sold for, but it wasn't very much, I think under $1000.00! Even though I'm not a PM knight collector, I wish I would have been able to get that collection just to help new collectors like yourself to complete their projects! See, you never know what the future holds ;)!

All too true!!! Bill is right!!! Its so awfull to realise something that defined your personality while you were growing up...Leave it packed in the loft!!! Its gonna be like a treasure rediscovered!!!

@ Bill....Great combined effort!! This is what i like in our forum!!! Did a member of this forum managed to get that lot??

From what I can tell I don't think so! A while after the transaction was complete, I noticed an eBay super seller with many auctions containing small batches of Steck parts for "buy it now" listings, & I fear it fell prey to being scattered about! I wish I had kept that eBay listing in a folder to show people now, because it was beyond belief! There were so many parts I dare say someone with the PM castle knowledge could have built 10 3666 castles & had enough parts left over to build unlimited custom castle projects! There were no figures or furnishings in the collection, but there were the yellow & green flags, red roof panels too many to count, Steck 4 & 3 way connectors....it was unbelievable, a once in a lifetime opportunity :(o):!

I found the original discussion under a topic called "eBay?" on here! I was taunting Indianna at the time into buying it :lol:! I knew her weakness >:D! The auction number was 370205029666 but it has disappeared on ebay due to being over a year ago :-\! & BTW, in the sellers listing he made mention of buying large quantities of DS Steck parts to do custom creations when they were available!

I took a photo of my steck before packing it away. It isn't much compared to some people's but I will still continue to add to it if I come across anything interesting :)

Is there anyway to find it using Google, as I know I have found really old ebay lots on there before although the advert is probably been gone forever now :'(

You have nothing to feel ashamed about! That is quite a nice collection to have in your possession! I'm sure there are others saying they wish they were as fortunate as yourself!

I don't know anything about the procedure to find old listings, but it has been just at a year so maybe you might be able to find it! BEWARE if you find it, you may need to have 911 on speed dial :lol:!

I have had a quick look with no success but I am sure someone has kept a copy of the pics maybe :prays:

BTW, its 999 for me Bill ;)

Looks like a great castle setup Damo, I haven't seen anyone do a design with a central tower connecting two separate courtyards before.

One day you'll have your own space, and more money to invest in your castle. For now, why not have smaller castle that can sit on top of a chest of drawers? Space and money, and the understanding of partners or parents, are limiting factors on all our collections.

Thanks, Martin  :) - Probably because it is a design that was never made because it was so rubbish and easy to attack maybe :-\

Never underestimate the power of your creations....There are potentials that can only be revealed through and in time....

The motte and bailey is a very ancient castle design, and if you think of your design as a castle with bailey, attached to a walled town, it is a very reasonable layout.

That looked like a great project you had in mind Damo, sorry you have had to dismantle it but I'm sure it won't be too long before it sees the light of day again.
If it's any consolation your steck collection is larger than mine  - I haven't got a lot of money to spare to buy more and keep getting outbid!  :'(
I've been pretty busy for the last few months, but am determined to sort out my ships in the next few days so hopefully I'll have some parts for you this week if you still want them. Maybe sorting out your pirate ship will be the beginning of a new project for you.  :)

Thanks Elaine - I still haven't got any more bits for it yet and any more would be of much help. I have just gone and stupidly bought another incomplete one although this one is'nt missing as much :doh:

As far as I can tell Flatcat, your collection (in a whole) is HUGE!
With all of your modern stuff, and everything else you collect.
But if you really like one group then I suggest you try to focus buying only from that group.
You dont have to sell any of your stuff, just stop buying from those catagories.
That way you can buuild up on your favorite theme, and make super latge setups of thet, instead of trying to make super large setups of everything! 8}
Then when your intrests shift, or if they shift...
You will have the other stuff to turn to, sitting up in your attic.
That is just an idea... ;)

I hope you have fun collecting!

And just so you know, I only collects knights, and your collection is bigger then mine! :)

You're right WoT, I think this is where I am going wrong. I am theoretically just a modern collector but then when I get joblots on ebay that include a pirate ship or castle etc, I just can't help myself buying even more to build upon them. I just love buying Playmo! 8} 8} 8}

Beleive me FlatCat, I understand the feeling!
I saw a fire truck at Target some time ago, and I thought it was soo cool
(mostly because of one of PlaymoFire's reveiws...) that I nearly bought it!
Luckly I didnt have any money, and reasoned with myself later that my Firemen would be very lonely
And I would have to start collecting other fire service men to go with them, and then, and then, and then... 8}

Its easy to drift away from your favorite theme....i've done it a lot of times and found myself wandering why did that...I've organised a few selves at my parents house where i have put all the playmobil sets and items that are not related to my favourite medieval theme...among other favourite themes...

Just keep working on it, off and on, when parts come available.
God luck, and I hope it comes together for you.:)

I don't stick to one favorite theme, my favorite is whatever I feel like playing with at the time.  ;D
