Title: My New Playmoden

Hi All,

as most of you know, my wife and I have recently relocated to Eugene Oregon in the Pacific Northwest, from London UK. A side effect of our move (and really a major factor in wanting to move) is that we now have a house about three times the size of our old London home, not counting garages and outdoor areas.

On our property is a detached garage, which my wife will be using as a woodshop, and above it is a 24x12' room with screen windows for ventilation in the Summer, and heater for the Winter. This is my new Playmoden.

I've fitted it out with seven 5'x2.5' folding tables, creating a tabletop surface of 5' width and 17.5' length. This leaves walking access round all sides, and eventually I'll get an office swivel chair. I also have a mini-fridge and a kettle for making tea, an iHome clock radio so I can have radio or iPod entertainment as I play, and a phone extension which works as an intercom, so my wife can call me from the main house.

Along the West wall is a series of doors to unfinished storage space, ideal for putting boxes when not in use.

The bulk of my current collection came over from London by ship, but every blue box you see here, barring one Pyramid, has been added since we arrived, some thanks to Gepetto holding it for me before I arrived in December. My lovely wife said nothing as our 850 sq ft apartment slowly filled up with more and more blue boxes.

My collection breaks down into a guesstimated:

Medieval/Knights 30%
Roman/Egyptian/Vikings & Gauls 20%
Pirates 20%
Western 10%
Adventure/Jungle 10%
Modern (Police, Fire & EMS, & Civilian) 10%

but I have so much I'd have to weigh it to be more accurate.

The main house takes priority, but I'll be working (playing) away here over the coming months re-organising my collection, and having lots of fun no doubt re-discovering buried treasures.

Magnificant Playmoden, Martin.  Look forward to seeing your setups and stories again.

Two comments about your den:

1.  There is no bed there.  This means that 8 hours a day you are away from your collection.    :o

2.  The intercom allows your wife to call you from the house.  Can you call her so she can bring food and drink across to you?    :)

Thanks Flatcat! It's waaaay too much Playmobil for one middle-aged adult male of course, but I hope this sort of thing shows Geobra how much money is being spent on Playmobil by collectors. When I was 8-13 I had maybe 20 figures tops, now I have thousands.

Congratulations Martin!! It is nice to see your plans come to fruition, look forward to more tales from the Playmoden!

Thanks Steve! There are quite a few boxes in there that wouldn't have made it without your help! It is indeed wonderful to finally be in the place and space I dreamed of. The garden is also going to be perfect for outdoor adventures.

Magnificant Playmoden, Martin.  Look forward to seeing your setups and stories again.

Thanks Gordon!

1. No bed 'tis true. I could put one in, but it'd cut into the Playmospace, and I have a big bed only minutes away in the main house. Plus as I'd be asleep, I can always dream about Playmo!

2. Yes, the intercom works both ways, but as I have a mini-fridge and kettle, drink is taken care of. Acxtually we have 4 handsets which can be carried around, or plugged into chargers. We keep #1 in the kitchen, #4 in the Playmoden, and #2 and #3 elsewhere in the house. I forgot to mention the microwave - as our kitchen has one built in, I have inherited the one we bought for the apartment. I could always get a toaster oven too.  ;D

You may as well have the post office forward your mail to the half address! If your house street address is 507, your garage Playmo room would be 507 1/2, then you would never be required to leave your collection!

Congratulations, Martin! :)  I'm so happy that you have such a large, wonderful room with plenty of storage space and ample floor space for so many tables!  You must be thrilled as well. ;)  With such a large space, you can do wonderful things with your collection!  With a fridge, microwave, and phone, you'll never want to leave!

I've now got a mottled green tablecloth, that my wife very kindly sewed together from a very long strip of fabric, to cover the seven tables that for the centrepiece of my Playmoden.  ;D

At the far end stands the Space Station I bought back in November in Dublin, that I finally found the time and space to assemble. I had planned to do a review as I built it, but it was so exhausting to put together I ran out of energy, and then my digital camera gave up the ghost  :hmm:, and I'm using my old one for now until I decide what to replace it with.

Now I have all this tabletop space (my previous available table space in London being less than one of the seven tables in area) I'm trying to organise my collection and get it all stowed in the wall cupboards, but there's a lot of separating into themes to do, and I keep finding stuff I'd forgotten I had and getting sidetracked.  ::)

I'm torn between assembling the Romans and Egyptians at opposite ends of the table, or organising my Knights and castles. Either job is going to be HUGE, and I've been putting it off until I can dedicate several uninterrupted days to it. My wife is currently on a trip to Washington which should have given me the ideal opportunity, but yesterday I did something to strain or otherwise twinge my shoulder, and temporarily have one arm in a sling.  :-[

Great Room Martin. Everything a person needs apart from a bed in the room. Maybe a desk and computer with internet so you can check here while you "work"

I'm actually using my laptop right now in the Playmoden, I took the picture and posted it all from here!

A bed would have cut down on the available table space - but I have another "office" room in the main house with a bed and desktop PC. It's really my PC games room, and very handily right next to the kitchen for sustenance and a bathroom for other necessities.

That's a wonderful field for a great battle, Martin!  Whether it be knights and their castles against other knights and their castles other or Romans against Egyptians, your field yearns for a great battle!  Regardless of which you choose to do first, I only hope you'll do the other second.

your new work/play space is quite a conversation piece, you must need to pinch yourself when you are up there to make sure you are not dreaming.  you mention that your wife will have her workshop as well, what is her favorite passion, or is it a secret? it will be fun to see your playmoprojects grow.  i wonder how long it will be until you run out of table space.

  That is exactly what I was thinking!

Congratulations, Martin - that is a wonderful room with a fabulous display area and great storage capability - we will all enjoy watching you fill it up!   ;D

My wife has several hobbies - first she has her fabric crafts room, which also spills out into the rest of the house. She cards, spins, dyes, sews, knits, crochets, quilts, and other stuff I can't recall right now.

Under my Playmoden is her woodwork "shop", or it will be when she starts to get some machines in there. For now it's an empty garage. The door in the corner leads to my den.

She is also enjoying gardening, now we have some space with raised beds and other features that our tiny yard in London didn't offer. The small potting greenhouse sits inside a wooden rectangle that will eventually house a full-size greenhouse.

Let me see if I understand this correctly: your wife has two rooms and a garden? And you have only the one room?  >:D

Yes indeed, almost worth moving to America for!

No, I have two rooms too. The 4th bedroom is my "office", i.e. my computer games room.  ;D And we share the garden, because I get to mow the lawns.
