Title: Best US method for removing paint/print from figures?
Post by: Martin Milner on March 17, 2010, 17:42:15
I know people have advised on this before, but I can't find the thread.

Could someone recommend the best retail chemical for removing the printing from figures without damaging the surfaces.

Specifically I'd like to remove some sergeant stripes from ACW figures as the ratio onf NCOs to privates is off, and I'd like to try removing the body and face paint off some of the african natives.

Martin, I'm not sure about whether or not Target has Barkeepers Friend. Susan and I have always bought it at the big grocery stores. What is the largest grocery chain where you are, Martin?

And, don't be like Timmy! Please follow the directions that I posted ...

All the best,
Richard

Target had it.

We've got a whole bunch of grocery stores nearby, Albertsons, Safeway, Market of Choice, Wal*Mart, Target, Bi-Mart, ShopKo, WinCo, CostCo.. that's the ones I can name without really thinking.

Took a couple of tries to get the right touch but it worked. It would be difficult to part clear a piece, but to remove everything off a part (arm, leg, torso) it works well, thanks Richard!

Happy to know that Target has it, Martin!

I've been able remove small places by covering what I wanted to save with the "tape" part of Flexible Fabric Band Aids.

All the best,
Richard

Try sugar cubes. Rub the sugar cube over the area you want stripped; It’s used to take the logos off of cell phones.

I would be careful with this technique!  :o
You can easily damage and scratch the plastic when using a sugar cube.
I think it is typically used to remove logos from metal coated cell phones!

i know one more way martin ,i used to do it when i wanted to remove the paint . you need 95% alcohol the one we use for injuries an cotton you will rub it as long as it needs . with this way you will remove only the drawings on cloths not for the black faces .  but this way will make your clicky shiny i must tell you .(perhaps you will like it )   alexis

I discovered that Wal*Mart also carries Barkeeper's Friend.

Even though I frequently work on the household chemical aisles, I never spotted it until yesterday when a customer asked specifically for it and I found it tucked away on the bottom shelf next to the Ajax powder.

I've always thought that it's really great stuff, Martin!

It will even take the rust off of chrome.

You can use it to clean Corian counter tops, glass stove tops, etc.

It's sort of to plastics and glass what WD40 is to rusted nuts and bolts ... another "magic potion" ... Don't you just love magic potions that work? ...

All the best,
Richard
