Welcome from the UK

The ship you question goes by both those set numbers depending on where it was sold in the world
(ie it would probably have been 3055 when sold in Germany, and 3740 if it were sold in the UK - am I right :-\)

Welcome from the UK.

At that time, both the 3055 and the 3074 would have been made in West Germany.  Similar items appeared with different numbers because of minor differences between them.  The 3740 was the original version and had guns that shot.  The 3055 was the USA version where the guns didn't shoot.

Oh well, I obviously know nothing about Playmobil

Thanks for clearing that one up Gordon, I have learnt something new today :)

Welcome from Germany!

I love the 3740. It is my favorite!
I second that it was kind of a strange decision to sell ships with cannon that do not fire.
Especially, as they just removed the spring at this time and the shooting stick used to slip out pretty pathologically.  :hmm:

I can just speculate that they were afraid of any lawsuit that might happen in the US if someone got hurt while playing with the pirates... Maybe they decided to do so spontanously and had to remove the springs in the short term?!

Anyway, welcome aboard and we are waiting for your questions... :)

best,
socrates

Hi Alexis

Welcome from the Scottish Highlands! :)

the guns didn't shoot that's strange ,that stick on the cannon doesn't go in and out? 3055 is of the same quality and collectable as 3740 or is just like an antex product  etc..?

The US have different safety standards for children's toys. As far as I know, the cannons in all US Playmobil sets (apart from the really big ones) are disarmed to prevent kiddies from shooting missiles at each other, but they can be taken apart and adjusted to make them fire again if you have the right parts.

3055 and 3740 are of exactly the same production quality. Neither one is an Antex set.

to the victorian theme as we all know the 7411 expansion floor came up in 1993 , someone told me that was available in 1991 is it true ?

The floor expansion set was around for several years. I remember buying one from the DS around 2000 or 2001. There were two versions with slightly different packaging but the same contents. The first was sold from 1993-95 and the last one from 1995-2001.

Well, from a collectors point of view you are completely right, the artwork on the old boxes is just amazing. I love it!
(Maybe I am too german for this, I do like to see the box content displayed neatly on the back.  :-[ )
But I am also a little disappointed by half-hearted photoshopping in the playmo-catalogues. Worst thing has been the artists in the circus tent...  :hmm:

Hey, and for everything else, thats what we are for. In the community, I have seen displays and setups and customs...
...they top everything playmo ever had on display on the boxes. ;)

best,
socrates

Playmobil's current US cannons do fire, but not the small ball missiles that the old European cannon had. The US cannon (e.g. from the recent Ghost Ship) fires a torpedo-like missile, with a cross-shaped shaft that clicks into place in the launcher, and varying head designs for a cannonball, orange or blue fire etc.

If Playmobil removed the springs from cannons it would have been a temporary fix until they came up with a US-acceptable design. Playmobil seem to be putting more and more missile launching devices in their knight and pirate themes, presumably because that's what kids want.

I presume the US torpedo design is to stop kids swallowing or stuffing balls up their nostrils. I can't see that a ball hitting the eye is going to do more damage that a torpedo. The torpedos look far less realistic when stacked on a ship's deck, but they are easier to find after launching, so I don't really mind them at all. It is a toy after all.

yes you are wright that's what kids want although when i stopped playing with playmobil arround 12 years old the new pirate theme came up and there was a set with the new  huge cannon (and that cannon after came together with many sets ) when i first saw it i said"oh my god what is this"i guess most children enjoy these cannons because now simmular things such as a cannon that shoots  aball with a stick and others are prodused.
