Title: 5898 Alaskan adventure SUV
Post by: Rasputin on January 03, 2010, 01:12:27
Hello all

One of this years new Target sets is the re-colored SUV. This round it is in a nice deep red color that I am very pleased with. We have seen most all these parts already used but not in these colors. The box graphics are very nice. I like the whole scene except that Klicky has never paddled a canoe or tied one on top of a vehicle before. It is selling for $19.99.

The contents are numerous and for the price is seems like a lot. The SUV for the vet is $18.99 and has far less items. The set takes a little over 5 minutes to assemble mainly due to the rims, tires & stickers. I like the design of how the tires are held on. It gives the affect of 4 wheel independent suspension . Good design and stronger than other vehicles.

The decals that came with it are pretty nice. I like the Alaskan license plate design. I was sad to see no decal to simulate a grill and I think one should have been added. The vet SUV looks more complete with it. It is an easy fix with an order from DS . There is a nice part that came for securing the canoe to the rack. It is similar to the camera strap but in black. It has 2 ends that clip onto any thing a Klicky can hold. I believe this is the same one that came with the Egyptians but in a new color.

Once assembled it is a nice looking set. You will notice that I chose to keep most decals off. I like a cleaner look and will just save them for later. There is a nice canoe, we could always use more trees, a moose and the SUV, though convertible it is a beautiful color. One odd thing is there is a System X plug on top of the roll bars and perhaps it is for future sets ? The Klicky has a lot of print and is a very outdoorsy modern look.

The main difference from this set is the new rear compartment and roll bar. In the picture is looks very chrome and Playmobil has done this in the past. I am disappointed in there attempts to misrepresent the colors. The tray w/spare tire holder is easily removable and not necessary, unless you get a flat. I think it looks better with out.

Now to the dislikes. I think for a true Alaskan outdoors-man he should have been armed to the teeth. A gun for every day of the week. Some camping gear would have been nice also. This set is already inexpensive so I really am not disappointed but come on, he has no survival gear.

Now the powder blue or baby blue, what ever kind of blue it is, it has to go. No "Man" would be caught dead with a color hat like that, especially on a outdoor expedition. I think gray looked better. Easy fix so no real problem.

Now it is a great set and for $20 it is a great value . It gives kids two vehicles, a tree and a large moose. I think this set  should sell like hotcakes and I really like the colors. Good job Playmobil. Now just get your outdoors-man to look right, paddle right, tie the boat correctly & most importantly give him a dog, it gets really lonely out there in the woods.

Great review Rasputin! The pictures are great and I really like the different angles,I have to say you are sure right about that hat!  Regarding his armament, you have to remember this is a European set, most people have probably not seen that much firepower and I think this set would go very well with the camping tent accessory pack (love the dog).

I am not keen on having an SUV around but I do like that color and I love moose, so I guess here we go to Target.  :-[

I figured that old cap was bad, it didn't say John Deere in the front.

I agree with you 100%.  Especially about the dog.  I like your picture of the guy and his dog in the canoe.  It looks like the dog is holding the gun.  Smart dog!

I guess I'm going to Target this weekend, although I doubt it will be there.  The Targets in my area tend to get their Playmobil long after Targets everywhere else get them.

I missed your comment about the rear compartment tray, yes it's grey not chrome as shown on the box.

That's blatant misrepresentation, and it'd teach Playmo if every single set was returned for a refund.  >:(

They could have done the whole tray in silver, but they went cheap.  >:(

Thanks for a great review, Ras, of a very smart looking item.  I should imagine Bill will have ideas for it in his fire department before long.  The slip in rear tray is a neat idea, as is the new roll bar with the System-X connector - maybe a way to fit a warning light at some time?  I think the spare wheel when fitted projects too far from the body to look right, which is a shame as the means of fitting it is quite a good solution.

Hi Martin

The last time Playmobil did this to us was with the 4670 Kings Knight. To me it really looked chrome and I was very excited about finally having some new shinny armor. I was very disappointed when I opened it and found out is was the normal gray/silver  :(

The decals that came with it are pretty nice. I like the Alaskan license plate design.

A little customization with the male figure by substituting with a brown hair piece, & scruffy face you would be able to have your very own Levi Johnston with SUV adventure set ! With a little more work, a bibbed overall female figure with brown hair & blue eye glasses, & a Sarah Palin add on could be done  :)9! The moose scene with rifles are already included with your awesome customization Ras, Well Done  :yippee:! Could there be a hunting accident between these figures in the near future using this new set  ????

I like the whole scene except that Klicky has never paddled a canoe or tied one on top of a vehicle before

rasputin i noticed the same thing, this poor little klickie with his sky blue hat will never get out on the lake.  fortunately the fishing lodge klickies have proper canoe paddles (x2) that allow them to grip the paddle at the end with one hand and part way down the shaft with the other hand, and allow them to paddle and feather in the proper manner.  kaethe

Great review. My guess is that the SysX connection spot on the rollbars is for a light bar of some sort

Hi Kaethe

Though Playmobil box art design team does not seem to know how to properly paddle a canoe or secure one on top of a rack at least the contents department knew which paddles to include. It came with two 30 05 7900's

Maybe this is the adorably cute fella that got laughed off the lake with his unorthodox hat & rowing style's to the point even his dog left him

I just got this set today, I was disappointed when I dropped by Target in early Jan to find this one sold out. Thankfully I was lucky today. The box seems huge for a set of this size, it could have easily fit one the same size as the Vet SUV, I guess Target wanted to have the box to take up as much visual space as possible.

I like your idea for the gun racks too, I wish playmo had included the clips as shown. Nothing like driving around with your hunting rifle only to have it go off because you didn't secure it.

You really do a great review, Ras!  ...

I saw this set at the Target here in Fort Lauderdale the day before yesterday. However, since I also really wanted sets 5884 and 5890, I had to make a tough decision.

Hi Richard

Well hopefully the set will be there till December. There should be some sales on it closer to that date but do keep in mind that last year (2009) Target ran out of a lot of Playmobil and some members were left high and dry.

Thanks for that very good advice, Ras!

Last year I waited too long to buy sets 4775 and 5836. Fortunately, I was able to order them on line from Target.

Lol, your edits to the set got a chuckle out of me but you are quite right.  The stupid hat really had to go and the klicky will feel much safer and happier with a few more weapons and a trusty canine companion at his side.  :)
