Title: New Animobil Site for Shields
Post by: Tiermann on November 14, 2009, 16:59:56
Hello all,
I've finally decided to go public with a project I've been slowly working on for a few years.
Shields & Heraldry at Animobil.info (http://www.animobil.info/shields/)

The new area is divided into two parts, one based on the shape of the shield and the other on the Heraldry (what's on the shield).
Like other Animobil areas the Shields section has a page for each individual shield with crosslinking to PlaymoDB. Most of the site is heavy on thumbnails that are clickable and take you to the page for the shield clicked.

All of the shields come from my own collection. I am still missing a number of them. I have a DS order enroute for some and some others coming from Playmobil USA soon. For the rest I am posting a thread in the Trade forum in the hopes of getting hold of them. Some simply have not been released in the US yet so I am not as focused on those. I will certainly get them when they are available (Wolf Knights for instance). There are a few discontinued ones that aren't available from US DS at all, or are so old we have no idea about the part number (or are from a Special).  Those would also be trade priorities.

I hope you all enjoy the site and find it useful. Perhaps in the future I will expand the Heraldry section to include flags and banners, horse caparison, and related figures. Please let me know what you think of it, and any errors or omissions you may find.

Thanks,
Tim

:wow:  Awesome job, Tim!  Once again you have put together an impressive reference site that is extremely well organized and beautifully documented.

It is stunning to see how many different shapes and designs of Playmobil shields have been done over the years.  You have taken a huge quantity of information and organized it into a very user-friendly and useful scheme, just as you have done with the animals.  The way that you prepare and present the photos is so great - all of them so consistent as to size, etc.  - it really makes the site a pleasure to wander through!   :yup:

I was reminded of a site from the "old days,"  Hituro's Armoury (http://www.teuton.org/~stranger/PLAYMOBIL/armoury/heraldry.html), which has some of the very old shields - it might be useful if there any blanks that need filling in (though that seems unlikely!)

Thanks for that, I remember Hituro's site from ages ago but hadn't been there in a while. It pointed out one I didn't have on my list. Thanks :)

That's a great new aspect to Animobil, Tim.   :wow: :wow: :wow:  I'm sure your site will prove useful to any number of people.  It already has to me, so thanks for that.

Excellent Tim! I particularly like the way you can hover the mouse over a design to get the part number or set number, very quick and easy to reference. I'm certainly going to be referring to this a lot.

I have a couple of suggestions,  one is have the option to sort by theme, and another to give set numbers where the shield appears as well as the part number. Of course that's easy for me to say, and a pig to get it all done.

Superb addition to the site, Tim!

I love how you have everything categorised so clearly, making it very easy and fast to find what you are looking for.
The images are first class, as always, and linking the part numbers back to PlaymoDB is ideal for all of us DS-ordering addicts. :)9
Thank you for all the hard work and time you put into this.  :*)

Thanks for the nice comments :)

Martin - If you click on the Series (theme) name on an individual page it takes you to the index page where they are sorted that way. I don't have a visual version like with the Shape and Heraldry. It's possible to do it and wouldn't be too difficult if people would like to see that as well.

As far as set numbers - I went that way in the main Animobil site and have learned my lesson. It requires more constant upkeep and some spreadsheet gymnastics to keep up to date. The part, or set number, links to PlaymoDB where what sets it's in will show up automatically. For this project that will be good enough.

Fantastic site, Tim!

And, a lot of work!

I've attached one shield that may be missing from your collection.
(Heather says that this shield was included in sets 3030, 4916 and 5792.)
If you'd like a clear head-on photo of this shield, I'll take a picture for you when our next container shipment arrives here in the Virgin Islands (in about a week or so).

Maybe some of the members over at GW-PC might also remember some others.

Thanks for doing this and for sharing your hard work with all of us.

All the best,
Richard
