Well due to Glazz's inspiration I decided to redo my layout and use his suggestion of tables. I really do not know what I was thinking putting it on the floor of a barn with the dogs and cats that come in ( d'oh! ) . I took a bunch of wine bottle boxes to the warehouse and cleared some room. I took some pictures of the mess before I took it down and here it is .

Ras, I love the picture showing the American Indians in the kid's pull along wagon!
You can quickly have an "Indian raid" on the settlers, the town or the fort at a moment's notice. The poor "palefaces" will never know what hit 'em ... ;D
Looking forward to seeing your Western layout soon being raised to new heights ... ;)

Ok now here is the new and improved version . It has so much more play potential for myself and the kids and those pesky animals should be less of a problem . Since I did this this afternoon the kids came home and we elaborated on it even further . We ran out of room and also need to find out switches ( it is amazing how pricey G scale is ) and will keep showing as we work on it .

Lovely!, I would use a lighter type of cloth or green because the colour is now too much like some of the buildings.
It appears you have to much turns and not enough straights ;). I bought a lot of secondhand straights a couple of years ago, they looked like the had been in somebody's garden for 20 years (they probably had). But after a good cleaning they looked like new!

Looking good so far Rasputin! Although I have to agree with highland cattle about your foundation color needing to be a lighter color in some areas to accent the buildings!

Thanks, When I finally get the supplies ( 4'x8' 1/4" plywood) I will be painting and gluing the scenery base down . I was thinking of painting green and gluing the loose fake grass stuff down for pastures and then the gray paint and gluing rock for the track base . roads will be brown .
The cloth is just something i had a few rolls of and it looked better than the bare tables for now .
Yes I end up will way too many turns in lots and have yet to start buying large straights and switches separately. I guess I am waiting to find it on sale, used or something .

Since everyone is giving you advice, Ras ... ;D Don't forget that you can also go up with your track and have bridges and tunnels and all kinds of stuff ... 8}
However, I've found that the best layouts are the "simple" ones. I like to keep my track on one level and put my scenery at different levels. Actually, you could have your train go into a mountain and use the top of the mountain for your town or Indians or whatever. Your layout's great because you can leave the inside of the "mountain" open at the back for maintenance or to easily retrieve a derailed train.
I've attached a few old photos of a "Christmas Layout" that I put up one year for the Holidays and never changed for about eight years ... :lol: The pictures should give you an idea of what I'm suggesting.

Richard when you made your tunnels ( and I do want one or two ) did you make it out of wire and paper mache or some different system ? I see you used non Playmo parts, was this just easier or is there a practical side to this ? I wanted to use the castle doorway . I see what you mean when making it with the back open , great tip .

Hello, Ras ...
Because this was a "temporary" layout, the tunnels were not permanent. They were made by constructing little tables out of plywood and 1" x 1" legs. I made the front legs slightly shorter to give the illusion of distance. Pieces of thin cardboard (like the poster board available at Target) was stapled to the front edge of the little tables and allowed to form a curve down to the top of the layout. Scenery was then placed on the little tables and the cardboard. This is a very quick, very easy, very cheap and easily modified scenic solution.
The tunnel portals are G Scale from Noch and the Church is G Scale fom Pola.
