Title: Fresh NEW train show PICS!
Post by: glazz74 on October 07, 2009, 04:11:17
Here are the latest pics from our modular layout that consists of over 2000 lbs. of boards and Playmobil.  Please note that not all these pics will be perfect as some of the sets may be missing pieces or parts.....or a person may not be driving a car. (nothing is attached except the track) Its a mobile set up that takes my wife and I 10-12 hours to set up of which we do about 3-5 times a year.  Actuall size is 36 x 16 feet that is 4 feet wide.

Thanks for the pictures, your layout has a lot of new additions in the last year.  I'm planning on going to the Puyallup fair in November to see it in person.

Wonderful photos, loads of new stuff - you've definitely been keeping up with the releases.
I love the boat on fire and the car over the edge of the layout - both new additions and they look fantastic.

Looks like Puyallup may be a meet. Too bad it's 6 hours away, seems unlikely I would make it

Glazz, Thats it now that I have seen your pics I am changing the way I was doing my lay out .

What I was wondering is the specs for your tables ? You said "Actual size is 36 x 16 feet that is 4 feet wide", is this 36 feet by 16 feet and each tables is 4 feet wide with a large opening in the middle for you ?

When you break it down how do you deal with the track where the tables meet ?

I take it all the buildings, cars, people & etc are not mounted , it actually looks like they do not even have tack holding them in place ?

I am guessing the legs are removable , how ?

Oh so many questions ?????

Incredible layout, Glazz ...  ... ...  ...  ...  ...

How do you keep curious little fingers from invading your display?

You must have a tremendous amount of energy. I can't imagine setting up such an enormous display more than once a year. Or, maybe once every other year. Or maybe once every five years. Or, maybe ...

Thank you very much for sharing your photos.

All the best,
Richard

This was one of my questions, but Glazz74 has ropes around it.  Ropes is not the right name but it's like what they use in banks to make you queue up for the teller.  These keep prying fingers about 3 feet from the display.  The blue ropes appear in a few of the pictures.

Nothing is tacked down except the track, they set it up from scratch each time

We have displayed this layout 3 times at the Chilliwack B.C. model train show over the last 7 years but that has been the only venue for Canada that we have done.

A few of the stats of the layout is that the only thing permanently mounted (other than some small items glued to the shelves of the store buildings) is the track itself...............as far as where the boards come together, its just a piece of track that is not connected until the boards go together to bridge the gap of the already mounted track pieces.

Yes it is 36 feet by 16 feet for the overall diamater and its 4 feet wide all around which gives us and interior space of 8 feet by 28 feet, a perfect amount of space to still move around, have a table, chairs, a tool box and a place for our custom carts to double as storage/work spaces.

3 of the boards are complete 4 by 8 foot sections, 2 boards are 4 by 4 foot sections and the remaining boards are all 2 by 8 foot sections.......they are all numbered and have a very specific placement to the setup of the layout.

The legs are comprised of PVC pipe that I belive is 2 1/4'' diamater (dont quote me on that though)

By using these legs they have proven to be fast for the setup and make for a very sturdy design.  They are of 2 different heights, one for the land and the other for the water and are easily attached to the underneath of the boards to an already mounted flat pipe (end)connector......a very simple but practical concept.
I would like to eventually fabricate a system of folding legs for each table that would still give me the desired height but yet still be of an affordable pricepoint.  Beacuase at the end there is an entire cart that I have built that just holds all of the pipe...some weight that I would like to shave away.    And to be honest, its my least favorite part of the setup and breakdown of the layout (even though it still works great and is fast).

What I will do for the show we have in November is try to photogragph and document the part of the setup that most people never see and also the exact design of the boards and the system that we use and works well.  I will also photograph how its all loaded for mobility purposes as well.
And will also get you the exact height dimensions also.

Here's a picture of the underside of the tables.  I modeled my tables after these and used PVC pipes as the legs.  When you clamp them together, they are very stable.

Hello

While looking for new movies (trying to find the UK competition entries) I came across this film of what look like Glazz's layout. It is easier to get a perspective on how large it is in video  :o

WOW, I haven't seen this thread before, and I absolutely adore this layout
My favourites would be the garden centre with field and the boat on fire! I also like the scrapyard - what is the black police car btw, I have never seen one of those only blue ones ???

Yes, that's Glazz' layout, you can see him in the background of one of the shots too.
It's a good movie. Since they basically build the layout from scratch each time they set it up it is always a little different each time in the structures and details.

Thank you Rasputin, that was a nicely done video! That layout is HUGE but not ponderous.
