Hi everyone, I got a surprise!
I was finally able to get a couple of what I consider extremely rare in this country, the elusive DRAGER promotional firefighter figures! You know, the ones with the white DRAGER company logo on the awesome red helmet, & blue logo on the yellow SCBA/BA air cylinder? They appear occasionally on eBay.de, but I haven't seen them before in this country until now! I really like the red firefighters helmets which I personally consider a great alternate choice that I wish was used in regular figure production opposed to the yellow, & white normally used. The yellow SCBA air cylinder would be better if it had been molded in a blue color instead of the standard yellow, with white logos on the original 30098960 air cylinder design. Here's the review of the set, I hope you like it.

BTW, the black rubber regulator hose will not stay attached to the grey SCBA frame as discussed in another thread I did! I may need to modify :0!

Ok now here is a question about the hard hat colors . Why is it that they are red, yellow, black, gray & white? It just seems that these are colors of fire, smoke, shadows, light . If you are running into a burning building it would seem the last thing you want to do is camouflage yourself . I know they put on those little 3M reflective strips but i would imagine the visibility is very poor given the circumstances . It seems like giving my guys green and black hard hats so when i am 55-100 feet up in the air i have no way of distinguishing them from the tree brush making them unknown targets would be similar.
I am only asking do to Bills comment on the red helmet . ??? which by the way I really like and now want one

Congratulations, Bill, on your buy and thanks for the neat review.
Answering Ras's question, in the UK the standard colours for fire helmets used to be yellow for fire crew and white for officers, the story behind this being that it reflected the original colours from the days of metal fire helmets when fire crew had brass ones and officers silver finish ones. As for colours and smoke any colour will get "lost" in a smoke filled atmosphere.
Red is a great daylight colour for being easily seen, btw, but not much good at night, especially under sodium lights where it registers as black.

You have asked a very interesting question Ras! The helmet colors are basically chosen by departments for preference reasons only. Usually to separate themselves between other departments. For example, black has always been chosen by FDNY, & is tradition. They, like all other departments rely on the Reflexlite, & Scotchlite reflective stickers that are activated by flashlites if needed, & is worn on helmets, & turnout gear. There even is a minimum requirement by fire safety regulation standards for this type of trim. In my former years of being a firefighter, I was required many times to repaint my black, & yellow painted leather helmets due to the paint being subjected to high heat, & abuse, & coming off, stickers, & all! Usually due to the atmosphere that firefighting teams face like; being subjected to thick oily, grimy, black smoke, extreme heat that melts, discolors, & singes anything in its path, black soot, melted dripping roofing tar, filthy water washing over them, wet plaster board falling on to them from overhead, clouds of dust, just to name a few, after a few calls with these types of conditions, the personal turnout gear Nomex/Kevlar bunker pants, & coats, boots, hoods, fire gloves, helmets, SCBA start deteriorating, & the cost to replace this equipment is unbelievable! It's been years since I have purchased any personal firefighting gear, but I remember paying over $1000.00 for a Nomex Aramid short jacket, & bibbed pants manufactured by Globe equipment in 1987! I'd probably pass out if quoted a price on current items of comparable specs!

Thank you everyone, for the positive feedback! I was very fortunate to find this rare item!

Cool review, Bill. I'm glad you were able to get it. The Red helmet is great, I wish they would have more of those. Though I do think that Drager's air cylinders are blue in color if I remember right... :hmm: Great set.

Ben, you are correct about the blue colored air cylinders that come on the new DRAGER AirBoss PSS 100 plus model, but some like the DRAGER PSS 90 model are still yellow as I found out.

In the UK the practice is to cover them with a yellow canvas(?) cover when in use.

Very intresting Gordon! I haven't seen that being done here yet. Do they change the cover when exchanging the spent air bottle with a fresh one, or do all of the spare air bottles have covers already on them ????
-
Interesting figure, the red does look sharp. Thanks for posting about him

Hi Bill,
The spares are without a cover and are slipped into it when changing.

Those look heavy . And with all the protective gear and then you run into a hot fire :'( those are not tears but sweat
-
Thank you for the photos Peter, it is much easier to follow the discussion! They do look heavy don't they?

When the metal tanks were popular they were very heavy! Now they have composite tanks that are considerably lighter, but more fragile, which is why the canvas covers are becoming more popular for protection.
