Title: 5864 Take along castle
Post by: Rasputin on September 01, 2009, 16:07:28
Ok here is a new US set that is out in Target, Kmart and i think in TRU. It would be perfect to take to a nice restaurant with each of the three boys with their own  . It sells for $29.99 and here it is first in pictures . I will add to this later .

The shield and sword i will use as a decoration on the office wall .

The weakened sword strap  :(

(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/1961/p1010024.jpg) (http://img84.imageshack.us/i/p1010024.jpg/)

The broken strap, if one is weak and the other broken and this is new I sure do not think they will last very long with kids using them .

The inside of the shield has a handle. I think they should have made the handle rigid , the last thing you want is a floppy shield in battle. It does have a notch so it locks in place but solid is better

Thanks for the review and great pictures Ras!

I'd like to get this for the Wolf Knight figures, which I think are a very good looking crew, but I don't particularly want the sword and shield. The shield-shaped castle is interesting, but I'm not sure I'd really use it with all the other castle pieces I have to make small towers and castles with.

If it's still available when I make to to the US then I'll probably get one, and maybe the price will have dropped.

Thanks, Ras, for an excellent review.  The poor quality is worrying with Playmobil again doing themselves no favours if this is common with their sets for outlets such as TRU.  Having said that, the quantity of figures and accessories offer great value for money I should imagine.

Well you know me, i would gladly send you the klickies, keep what ever you do not want and we could split up the cost  ;)

Thanks for the pictures and the review, Rasputin.  Welcome back, too!

When I first saw this set, I thought it was useless except for a couple of the klickies that I'd really like to have.  Upon seeing Rasputin's pictures, however, I think I just may purchase it, as I didn't realize it included the castle piece, which is pretty interesting and could be used in a number of applications.

Although I'm not interested in the set to buy, I must admit that castle does have some nice points about it.  I actually thought it was shaped rather ship like when I first saw Ras's photos, but then Martin pointed out it copied the shape of the shield.

Thanks for the offer Ras. Taking a really close look, the only thing I really want (about five of) is that round red wolf shield, which I think is a new part. The part number for that shield would be handy.

The wolf knight figures themselves are not different enough from those I already have, indeed one looks like they're reusing the legs from the Kiss knight.

Personnally, I like the figures. Specially the wolfknights. IMHO they're one of the best Knights-family ever made by Geobra.
I am also quite taken by the ground - those cobblestones look lovely. Wonder if there's a way to use them for my castle  ???

I definitly would like a set ... for the right price though  ;)

Bogro

Maybe a grassed area surrounded by cobbles, but the external shape is a problem.

well the rock is very easy to remove

(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/9181/p1010001d.jpg) (http://img84.imageshack.us/i/p1010001d.jpg/)

The walls match stecks very well

(http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/1797/p1010002o.jpg) (http://img76.imageshack.us/i/p1010002o.jpg/)

it leaves you with an odd sized hole that is not quickly filled with steck square shapes . I am sure some modifying could be easily done

(http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/6120/p10100041.jpg) (http://img297.imageshack.us/i/p10100041.jpg/)

It does look nice thought and i think would be worth the effort

Thanks for the extra pictures, Ras.  I had thought that the cobbles were a separate piece and was imagining them in front of the castle or in a courtyard.  Certainly, though there are possibilities - maybe a tall watch tower?

Great review and photos Rasputin, I am glad to see the rocks come off so easily. It does look like it would make a nice watchtower or ruin, this is the beauty of reviews in that I had already written this set off but now I going to look at it again!

Dear Rasputin,

Many, many thanks for a fantastic review -- the pictures are great!

Like many others, I'm not so keen on the castle/shield itself, but the figures and accessories are terrific!

I already have a decent-sized body of Wolf Clan knights/soldiers, but more will be quite welcome. And the round shield is a nice new piece.

I'm most enthused about the 'other' knights and some of their accessories: the simple blue-and-yellow-quarters shields and bodies are very nice. I'm glad to see Playmobil using a new blazon that is closer to those actually used in the Middle Ages. Some of the dragon/Celtic blazons of the last few years are great for fantasy, but not so much for historical accuracy. But then, of course, Playmobil isn't designing to be historically accurate -- they're producing what they think will sell.

And is the blue pennant really a dark(-ish) blue, to match the colour of the Lion/King's knights? If so, this is something I've hoped for a while would appear: it will make creating banners for custom groups using that shade of blue much easier!

Anyway, thanks again for sharing all your great pictures.

Now I'll just have to wait for all the part numbers to appear on PlaymoDB... And then send in a parts order that will get me deeper into debt  :P !

Cheers,

AndrewL

The pennant is a blue similar to the the back sweeping feathers dark blue # 30 07 8070 . The blue on the shield is a different dark blue tone

I still do not have a scanner to send Heather the info so if you need anything specific just ask

I think this is a very nice set. Thank you Rasputin for the review and pics. I'll have to pick one up for my son for future use, seeing that he's only 4 months old right now. I do however think he'll appreciate it down the road.  ;)

Sorry, Ras ...  :-[

I missed your excellent review of a set that I had totally written off and thought that I'd never ever want.

Every time that I saw it in Target and Toys R Us, I thought that it was just a sword and shield for kids to play with. I never even picked it up, so I had no idea that it was anything more than that.

This is a great set !!!

I'm hoping now, that while I'm still in Fort Lauderdale, that my local Target still has one left.

Thanks for doing what Playmobil didn't do with their box design ... let me see that there was a lot more inside than what met the eye.

All the best,
Richard

Richard , not only does this set have some nice parts do not write off the sword & shield . It is a great marriage counseling tool similar to the father and son boxing gloves

After some thought (and years of education and experience) it would seem that, IMO, the wife gets the sword and the husband gets the shield ...  ;D

I got one of these recently, and while I'm not mad keen on the shield shaped castle, there are certainly lots of accessories included, and it makes a great playset.

As Andrew said, the blue/yellow quartering on two of the figures is far more realistic than most offerings, and I like them greatly for that reason. The Wolf Knights are a welcome addition to one of my clans, and that round shield is great.

If the accessories from this set were swopped with those from set 5863, there's no doubt what I'd buy, as the castle part in that set is much nicer to my eye, but I prefer these figures.

Although the shield shape is probably quite a sound defensive shape, plenty of curves (I guess Ras will have some comment on this term!  ;) ) which are stronger than angles and no obvious projections to give cover to an attacking force.

Great review and pictures, thanks from Greece. would love to have some of these to add to mediaval collection, these outposts would fit nicely with so many sets i am thinking about , they look perfect and go well with the old castle walls .. nice klickies too, the black hooded one is a very sinister klickie without being over the top as the new flying fantasy klickies etc that i think are too much.. really like the fortifications and the set up , awesome to see this small fortification with the shields and banners !!! will check ebay now, they would look awesome as outposts .....
