Title: My big little pick me up
Post by: Rasputin on August 27, 2009, 00:57:00
Well on the way home from my job site I just had to stop at the toy store , especally since talking about Kaethe's new store . So as I drove up I imedeatly notice a new 5 foot Klicky in front ( the clown ) . While in the store browsing the new US items and playing with the floor display piramid I noticed the owner walked in . I went over and could not resist asking what they did with the old figure ? Well he said it was all beaten up and also seeing as they are getting harder and harder to get he said they planed on keeping it just in case .  He looked at me and looked ( i think this is where i got all tiered eyed ) and then with a great pause...... he asked if i wanted it ? Hell yes I said with out a moments hesitation ! Well he said come with me . We went into the back room where all the overstock is kept and there he was . He is all beaten up but its a lot better that anything i currently have which is nothing .  I promised to tell everybody how great his store is .

The store Toy Works (http://www.sonomatoyworks.com/) is family owned and the owner John works ( well plays ) in one store . His wife works at the other and the son works at the third. The stores are well stocked and the staff is nice, educated and helpfull. They sell very good quality stuff and have many things open to try out . The owner also still has his collection of playmobil from when his kids were little ( i have yet to talk him into selling them to me ) . So if you are ever in Sonoma County and want to taste California Wine stop by his shop and my office . The prices are similar to Playmobils and in october he has his 22% off sale .

That's a fine looking klicky you got there!  I totally regret giving away my 6 life-sized figures when I closed the store..... Congrats on your adoption!

What a luck you have! There are also some smaller ones in the shop displays (about 40 cm in height) I also always ask the shop assistants if the would sell them to me but all refused so far. You must be a really happy man.

What a friendly guy! :D

Do you think the figure can be restored?
It seems to be held together with a lot of tape. Maybe just removing the tape and using some kind of strong glue will greatly improve its appearance.

A great addition to your collection, Ras.  Well done!

When we visit the Malta FunPark this year I hope to come away with a giant fireman.  My plan is to leave Diane in its place, she's about the right height, and just walk out with my arm round the fireman.

Yes I do play on trying to clean him up a bit . He was used for years infront of a store going in and out on a daily basis so he  has been around the block more than once . I will try removing the tape on the outside and putting industrial PVC tape on the inside .

Sylvia / Rasputin

The only way I could ever fix my big guys was to fuse the tears together using a product called Plastex.  I had tried a number of methods to glue or "weld" the tears together but had little success. [Plastic welding is basically a pain in the derrier.] The plastic on these guys is very thin and the hardest part of mending them was to get the two sides to line up!  If you are going to try to fix the big guy, Rasputin, I would give the Plastex a try.  Chances are pretty good he will also need some interior reinforcement at the tears ... a good polyethylene or polystyrene sheet should do the trick. Just be forewarned, it is very delicate surgery and practicing with some other similar plastic before attempting klickly life-saving techniques is strongly recommended!  Good Luck!

BTW... that isn't his proper hat.... He should have an airline hat on [I used to have him in my shop.] However, isn't that the glorious thing about klickys....?  Mix and match I say!!!  I wonder if he is a pilot masquerading as a pirate or a pirate masquerading as a pilot?

Post by: Rasputin on August 28, 2009, 13:26:23
Thanks for the fixing tips . I guess I really am only interested in cleaning him up and not a total restoration . The Plastex sound like something i will try but not get my knickers in a twist over . The idea of putting a plastic sheet inside as a reinforcement is very smart .

I like to think of him as a Pirate of the skies  :arrr: . How one could pirate a plane in mid-air is a trade secret that i am not allowed to tell or its walk the plank ( with out a parachute ) .

Rasputin-

The only reason I mention the Plastex is because once these guys get cracks, a basic tape isn't going to stop it from ripping more. The structure is compromised and any movement can result in further destabilization.  Short of mummifying it, and if you want him to last, it might be worth the $14.95 for the goop.  I worry so about our large friends!  ;-)

karim, those are fun to see.  can you add some captions, on where you found them, if you remember?  i am particularly intrigued on where the mounted klicky is.  this is fun to see for those of us in the states, where they are not as common.

Thank you Kaethe for your nice comments !!!

I believe the Indian figure on a horse was standing outside the Exhibition celebrating the 30 years of Playmobil but I am sure that a few Playmofriends can confirm this.

The other giants figures can be found in various Department Stores accross Europe and especially this summer around France in an ongoing exhibition called the Village Playmobil.

Here are a few more Playmo Giants for you to enjoy...

Karim  :)

PS : I have a feeling that I have been a bit omnipresent in the past few days on Playmofriends and I need to stepback a bit not to become an indigestion by overdose :(...

I really want to have one too someday but I doubt I will...firstly I cant spare the money right now, secondly, there is no room to put a giant klicky (playmoden is full you see ;)) and thirdly...and most imprortantly... Playmobil Hellas does not allow any retailer to sell,or give away, a giand klicky...its a trademark for them that ''playmobil is sold here'' ... :( And someone from ebay will be willing to post the giant klicky to Greece...  :(

But if i did get one, i'd like to have a pirate captain..or a viking...or one of the new dragonknights...or  ;D ;D ;D

I never thought I'd be able to afford one, but Ken cost me under £50 and it was for a good cause as the money went to the RNLI.   0)
I know Ken needs quite a bit of work, but I reckon he'll do up OK. ... and I only have to look at him and he makes me smile, so I think it was money well spent. :)
