Hi,
while I was browsing through my recently acquired bunch of old Playmobil catalogues, I noticed the beautiful pictures inside. In my opinion they breathe a much better atmosphere than those modern photoshopped illustrations. I will post the best in this thread.
we start with the catalogue from 1983/84:
-
the catalogue from 1984/85:
-
the catalogue from 1985/86 (part 1):
-
part 2:
-
the catalogue from 1987(part 1):
-
part 2:
-
the catalogue of 1987/88 (part 1):
-
part 2:
-
the catalogue of 1988/89 (part 1):

part 2:

the catalogue of 1989/90:

and finally the catalogue of 1990/91:

MBL,
Thank you so very much for sharing these dioramas.
I also like the older scenes better than the new ones.
There is one adventurous eskimo (Inuit ?) for he pops up in two scenes where Eskimoes would not normally be.
I also like the simple scenery additions. In some of the early western scenes, they used paper cutouts for cacti.
I was disappointed to see that the two western sets I am looking for were not pictured in your catalogues. I suppose they were only issued for a year or two, and then retired.
Thank you again.
I am glad you picture posting problems have been worked out.

Which western sets are those then?
-
The original (?only?) bank. It came with a safe.
It has been rereleased by Antex, but I would really like an original.
There is also a Wells Fargo Building. It is red, and very hard to find.
-
According to the Playmobil Collector they are both extremely rare (thus expensive). The bank was retired in 1981/82 and the Wells Fargo set in 1979/80. So they were gone before the pictures in the catalogues.
-
Thanks for doing the research on the buildings.
I appreciate it.

I notice in the wstern scene in
cat87881.jpg there is a rescue helicopter in the top of the picture for some reason...
-
The stars in the western movies wanted to have medical help there if they were hurt.

This are so very cool Luc! I made a list of favorites as I viewed them but it got a bit long! :)
I much prefer these types of photos to the new slick catalogues. They show the toy in creative setting a "real" person (even a child) might dream up and aren't so full of advertising. I like that the focus is on the Playmo and not on the graphics.
That said, I'll list my (edited) favorites:
84/85 Princess and Ghost
84/85 Brawl Outside the Western Saloon
85/86 Eskimo/Inuit Setting (I must find more eskimos!)
85/86 Safari with Volcano and Awesome Monkey Tree
87 Pile up on the highway! :o
87 Safari Scene (beautiful)
88/89 Circus with Elephant Act and Clowns
88/89 Artic Scene with Fishing Trawler (very cool integration of themes)
88/89 Western Train
90/91 Deep Sea Diver with Wrecked Yacht
90/91 Pirate Cave
Thanks for sharing these! (Glad you can post lots of photos now. :) )

Sorry to drag up an old thread but those are some great pictures MBL. I envy your collection of catalogues. How far back do they go?
I also wonder if maybe you could help me verify some information?
I am looking for information on the attached picture, which is supposedly from the 1986 catalogue. A set # and name would be a great start. The set # I have is 3478, but I have always questioned that. Any verification and/or help on that from your early catalogues would be appreciated.

Yeah Dunc, it looks just like the box photo for 3478 in the Playmobil Collector book. In version 1 of the book it;s page 84 lower left corner.

I don't have the books Tim. :'( Never got around to putting in an order w/ Axel for the first one, and havent got around to buying the 2nd edition yet.
I've had that picture since 03 when I first started on the PLM Jeepz page and have never been able to verify it's number or if it was infact from 1986. According to the only other picture I have, the set dates to 84. I may have even supplied that picture for the book as I do recall sending Axel some images for the book in his early research days. But I don't recall what I sent.
I like the older and original pictures of these sets before they have been tampered with and mixed up with other parts. This means, I cannot be sure of the contents of the set during my research. And for my own writing and collecting purposes, this can be a bit frustrating. I know my own set isn't complete or has been mixed up a bit klicky and/or parts-wise based on the other picture I have, but I always wanted to verify the years it existed if I could especially whether or not in the 1986 catalogue.
I guess I should pick up a 2nd edition Collectors Book, it might be a good thing to have around. I'll put that on my list of things to get from DS.
Thanks Tim for the notation.
-
In the 2nd edition it's on p96, bottom right and is shown as running from 1984/85-1988/89.
Your pic is also shown as being on the front of the 1986/87 catalogue on page 105.
How, btw, did I miss this thread earlier? Thanks for all your work on it Jean Luc, and thanks Outback for reviving it.
-
Thanks Gordon. I wil update the Jeep Page to reflect this information.
I had better get on to ordering a copy of that book soon.
