Hi Playmo-seafarers,
I made a custom Captains hat from a police hat and Mighty Putty,
so I needed a Captain to wear it...
So here is the little sea-dog awaiting fair weather, and a submarine to
command.
Jimbo
(http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z202/WingArtyst/u-boatklicky-1.jpg)
-
Nice work, Jimbo. Now, remind me, is there a submarine for him or is that on the stocks?
-
Hi Playmofire,
The sub is about 60% complete! :yup:
I am waiting for a book to come in to the book store that should
have the detailed pics that I need to finish her up.
So far the sub is about 60" long, 12" high, and 8" wide at the
widest part of the boat. It will be fairly simple though.
Best regards,
Jimbo
-
Great custom Jimbo!! But now that I know of it I am really curious to see the sub also! Will the sub have a full crew?
Gepetto
-
Ahoy Gepetto,
I'm kinda in a hurry to get the sub done. It won't have a full crew, just a few deck hands.
My original thought was to build a complete interior of the sub, with the major compartments, but I changed my mind because of the size of the task. There are
just too many pipes, gauges, and "sub-things" to make! 8}
But at any rate, I hope it will make the little Captain proud :yup:
Best regards,
Jimbo
-
Wow sounds like a dangerous adventure . What era are you shooting for ;)
-
AWESOME !!!
Made me think of "Das Boote" immediately.
I must admit that I am really curious to your sub as well. Can't wait for the pics ...
Don't you have some sneak previews 0) ???
Bogro
-
Made me think of "Das Boote" immediately.
Yes, me too! Really a great work with high recall-value. Well done.
-
Great figure! He looks a very salty sea dog.
I'm thinking of Hunt for Red October.
-
Just out of curiosity - have you ever seen "Das Boote", Martin?
-
Das Boot definitely.
Gepetto
-
I agree, Das Boote, a great series; we saw it on BBC.
-
Don't you have some sneak previews 0) ???
Hi Borgo..here is a picture as she sits today. :yup:
Rasputin..I think early 1942 may be a good time frame.
Thanks for the nice comments, all.
Jimbo

Beautiful Jimbo! :wow: :wow: Thanks for the early pix.
Gepetto
-
Hi Borgo..here is a picture as she sits today. :yup:
Awesome !!!
I am rather amazed by your woodcraft. Wish I was that handy :wow:
BTW, 1942 - isn't that the second "happy time" ? That would be a great moment to depict a U-Boot captain.
Bogro
-
Wow how accurate it is executed! :o Wood, right?
-
Excellent work, Jimbo. :wow:
-
Just out of curiosity - have you ever seen "Das Boote", Martin?
Not yet, must've missed the TV series when it was on. I've got the book, but never read that either. There's always more to learn.
-
If you have the chance, I would recommend it. It's available here on DVD for just an apple and a egg (as we say here) but it is ever so good !!!
An epic war-movie as a war-movie should be (IMHO) - frank and nothing glorious about it...
But then again - that's just me ;)
Bogro
-
:o Wood, right?
Hi Little Jo,
Yup, it is all plywood and solid pine so far..I think some of the details will be plastic or metal...still pondering. :-\
Hi all...
The sub is modeled after a U-Boat like the one in "Das Boot". I saw some of the
movie. It was a bit gruesome though :(. I am also using two books I have on the
subject, and waiting patiently for another.
Thanks for the great input..it keeps me inspired :yup:
Best regards,
Jimbo
-
Yup, it is all plywood and solid pine so far ...
Hello, Jimbo ...
Plywood and pine? Hmmm ... That means that it will probably float? In Arizona? ... :klickywink:
Love your U Boat Captain, Jim!
And, I'm really excited about getting to see your progress on your submarine!
Thanks for sharing.
All the best,
Richard
-
That means that it will probably float? In Arizona? ... :klickywink:
I found some water near a treatment plant..water is water, right? ;D
The hull passed the float test..all that is left to do is the conning tower detail, the deck guns, and paint! (I am wondering if I should put guns on... ???)
Am also finishing up on another crew member. An engineering officer maybe.
Best regards,
Jimbo
-
U-BOAT ATTACKS WATER TREATMENT PLANT IN ARIZONA!
Please post photos, Jim ... ;)
-
Truly impressive creations Jim :wow:! Can't wait to see everything completed together!
-
although i prefer earlier submarine designs (like bushnell's turtle) i think you did an amazing job jimbo. :wow:
thank you for showing it. :)
-
If you wanted to mount guns (they did have them after all) you could plug and tarp them so they are not quite so 'overt' :2c:, more photos would help ease the pain. :)
Gepetto
-

Wow, Cachalote, Bushnell's turtle would make an excellent Playmobil
project. It is just the right size :yup:
Thanks for the kind remarks,
Best regards,
Jimbo

Excellent idea, Gepetto :yup:. I had not thought of that. I wouldn't have to
be conserened as much with gun detail .
If Knightmo comes over today, we might post another "not done yet' photo.
Best regards,
Jimbo
-
you are right jimbo, the "turtle" has the right size. :yup:
it would go fantastic with a victorian baloon - like the one magayver and rapunzel made (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=1899.30) ;)
if you like old subs, try this link - http://www.submarine-history.com/NOVAone.htm. :)
there you can also find the american diver made by hunley that was discovered and brought to the surface a few time ago.

Remember that model of the Hunley that Malone made? That was an exceptional piece of work.

Let's see if this works:

That is a very good model! :yup: That must have taken some nerve
to cast off in a boat like that 8}
Top water sailor,
Jimbo
-
:wow: wow gepetto, somehow i completely missed that thread.
 malone is really a great craftsman and the hunley looks great (i just detected it is missing the pole with the explosives at the end).

I think the spar was fitted once it was in the water, I think the photo of it on the flatbed railcar is excellent.

Hi all.
Here is another "not quite done" pic. of the u-boat, sailing in my gravel front
yard. Hopfully the commissioning photo will be in some water.... ;)
sanding, painting,sanding,painting...
Jimbo

Very nice Jimbo, very nice indeed! :yup: Thank you very much for the photo.
Gepetto

:wow:
-
She's coming along fine, Jim ...
Looks like you've already attached the diving planes. They look great!
Just did my research, "The San Pedro and Santa Cruz rivers begin their lives near the Sonora-Arizona border and flow north into Arizona then into the Gila River to the Colorado River and ultimately to the Gulf of California."
That's going to be one tricky navigation for your U-Boat, Jimbo ... ;)
This is one project that I don't want to miss. BTW, I've started fitting out one of my brand new flying boats 4445 (http://demandware.edgesuite.net/aabe_prd/on/demandware.static/Sites-US-Site/Sites-Catalog/en_US/v1233737003335/imagesOnline/products/4445.jpg) with some depth charges ... ;D
All kidding aside, Jim ... She's going to be a great boat!
Thanks for sharing and all the best,
Richard
-
She's really is looking great, Jimbo. Can't wait for the trials pictures.
-
Ahoy again, Playmofriends.
Here is the latest sub crewmember. I think he is an engineering officer. The collar
and shoulder boards are from the police blister pack.
I made the baggy pants with JB weld, and the hat from what else, Mighty Putty! The gun in the background is the forward deck gun...I might not have to throw
a tarp over it after all, Geppeto. ;). Sub is still in work..tiny details, and more primer.
It weighs about 30 pounds now.
Thanks Knightmo for the technical assist in posting the pics :yup:
Best regards,

The detail is excellent :wow:! I'm speechless in regards to realism! Keep us up to date as you go! I'm going to have to try Mighty Putty on something just to see how it works 'cause you've done so many awesome projects with it, & now JB Weld, OK !
-
Great job Jimbo, that deck gun looks great!
Gepetto
-
Wow this looks cool. The trousers are great! Well done. :wow:
-
Excellent work, Jimbo. The gun looks particularly good with just enough detail to say what it is without going over the top with a lot of detailing of controls. It reminds me of a probably 1:72 scale Dinky Toy (?) anti-aircraft gun I inherited from a cousin when I was a youngster.
-
WOW ... what can I say. I think it looks awesome !!!
I just love the Engineer!
How many more deck-hands are you planning on?
Bogro
-
Hello, Jimbo ...
Thank you very much for letting us watch you create your U-boat!
It not only lets us see how much thought, time, energy, love and care that you're putting into this wonderful project, it also lets us almost feel like we're somehow participating.
This is really exciting to see!
Thanks again and all the best,
Richard
-
it also lets us almost feel like we're somehow participating.
Hi everyone. Thanks for the great comments, much appreciated :yup:.
You would be surprised as to how much everyones comments and
encouragements have moved this project along! So in actuality, you
all are participating in the project. Many thanks!
There is a possible mess cook for an additional crew member, I just need an apron.
I'm working on the AA gun for the wintergarten......never know when a pesky flying
boat will come out of the sun.
Sanding, drilling, gluing,

I'm working on the AA gun for the wintergarten......never know when a pesky flying
boat will come out of the sun.
We're hoping to have our squadron armed and operational long before you're able to slip away into the open sea ...
Pictures coming soon ...
-
Ahoy, Playmofriends. The sub is finally finished! :yippee: I think all the pics
speak for themselves. I used playmo handrails for the ladder on the right
side of the conning tower. (Starboard side that is ;D) The compas forward
in the conning tower is playmo also.
A kilcky can actually operate the AA gun on the wintergarten :yup:.
The radio wire insulators are fishing swivels...they look kinda like the ones
in my books.
The next photo will be under way to the Atlantic.......
Prepare to cast off!

Beautiful Jimbo, absolutely beautiful! :wow: :wow: Enough detail to capture the spirit of the original, yet spare enough to keep it clean, wonderful job, your sailors are excellent also!
Glad we were able to help!

Mate, what't this??! AMAZING!!!
WONDERFUL!
BEAUTIFUL!
What to say??! 8}
Great work, Jimbo!
It's very accurate. Each detail. (Love the detail of the compass!) Characters are excellent. Cannons are perfect. (Does it float? ;D )
Nicely done.
Thanks for sharing with us!
(Funny, I almost didn't get it. (I'm definitely not into modern playmostuff ...) I was lucky that you shared as image, not as attachment ... I could see in the "last posts", as I was looking for something else, and I saw your sub, and I thought with myself "what's this??!" )

Wow what a cool ship. 8-)
The fittings are great and the crew perfect.
So next challenge would be to make an interrior model of the ship.
-
:wow: AWESOME !!! :wow:
I am impressed!
The boat looks wonderfull and matches the crew perfectly. It is really remarkable - I wish I was as handy as that ... Wonderfull ... delightful..
Bogro

I'm speechless Jimbo :wow:! A true masterpiece :)9! Well done in a remarkably short time :confetti:!
-
wow
a masterpiece
our congrats , very well done
wonderfull figures , all of them
all the best
-
Truly a masterpiece, Jimbo :wow: :wow: :wow:. And now, ahoy for the open sea!
-
I can only echo everyone's comments, Jimbo ...
Your Wintergarten is a beautiful ship!
However, since I'm outfitting a squadron of flying boats to send the Wintergarten to the bottom of the sea ... permanently ... I've been very interested in your anti-aircraft gun. And, especially the swamp monster that you seem to have recruited to fire the thing.
see attachment
-
That is truly a beautiful masterpiece :wow: Thank you for showing us how it was made from the beginning
-
A masterpiece indeed, very "Das boot"
-

Ahoy Richard
The swamp monster is a pile of upside down tree stumps that I have collected, and put in the front yard. Easy up keep and very little water ;D
The "real" gunner is at his battlestation, but should be in no danger from flying boats,
as you can see, we are sailing under the Swiss flag....only things in the torpedo tubes
are Swiss cheese and chocolate! :yup:
Peaceful regards,

The Swiss navy's subfleet on the Bodensee (Lake Constance)? Hmmm ... :hmm:
The Wintergarten sure floats beautifuly, Jimbo !!!
But, a Swiss U-Boat on Lake Constance ... sounds like an unlikely story ... ;)
Peaceful regards,
Jimbo
We've told our anti-sub squadron to stand down for now ... But, we'll be watching ... 8-)
Seriously ... Congratulations on a job well done, Jimbo!
All the best,
Richard
-
we should not make fun of swiss sailing skills. :-[
they won america's cup twice richard. :yup:
i can see only a minor problem with this beautiful sub, jimbo - apparently it has no balast holes in its hull. 8}
... or maybe they are so well disguised in order to make richard's squadrons believe that it can only sail above the surface). :hmm:
remarkable work jimbo, and thank you very much for sharing it with us. :wow:

My apologies to the Swiss, Cachalote ... ;D

Good eye, Cachalote. I was going to put those on with black tape, but I got lazy :-[
I think I may retro fit those and see what it looks like.
And, Thanks to all my Playmofriends for making this adventure enjoyable. :yup:
I wonder....does the Swiss navy need a BATTLESHIP?
Hey Capitano, got anything to go with this cheese?
Jimbo
-
I'm wondering too: a swiss submarine ???
I lived over 20 years at the lake of constance and I'm sure there aren't any submarines in there ... (and I don't think that they are in the Lake of Geneva ...)
-
the main advantage of a submarine little jo, it's its stealth action. >:D
i have it from a secure source - lake geneva is filled with submarines. :yup:
i am taking a big risk in disclosing this information but what everyone thinks is a turistic gadget is actually an underwater sub base where the air is renewed. ;)
-
Woow! I didn't know this. This is really interesting. Not only a war tool but also an environmental health enahancement those submarines. So actually we could be glad that in the middle of Europe such a environmental lung exists.
Your secret information for sure will be save at our ears. :yup:
-
All those summers swimming in Bodensee and pedalling paddleboats...I always suspected the Swiss were spying...
FABULOUS submarine! I am truly in awe of your skills! :wow: :wow:
-
i stopped using playmobil for about a year, and im kind of back, but this is amazing!!! :wow: :wow: :wow:
