Hello Everyone :),
This is a first for me because i don't normally like to post pictures of my work room but i have decided to go against that today and share it with you. One of the main reasons i haven't shared it with anyone before is because its in such a mess :-[. Another reason i don't like to post pictures of my work room is because its full of 'secret :shhhh:' unfinished projects. I feel that its cheating to post pictures of something thats not even close to being finished, but thats just me  I mean anyone can stack a load of parts on top of each other and call it a steam roller
This is my work room from the outside. It used to be an old coal shed untill the house was refurbished by the council in the late 80's and they changed the old coal shed into a room. As soon as we moved in i claimed it for my own and its been a work room of some sort or other ever since.

This is the sight that would immediately greet you if you attempted to navigate your way past the door. As you can see 95% of what is contained in the room is Playmobil . Its hard to imagine but i know where 90% of it is and most of it has been sorted out allthough vehicles do tend to spill out onto the floor from time to time.

A close up of the shelving reveals some old projects and quite a lot of my collection that is too fragile to store anywhere else. Anything that is not here has over spilled onto the floor or shelves in my bed room :-[
(http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm181/Tim_W_Photos/Shelving.jpg)
This is the second shelving unit which is home to my Ambulance service and Police force. It is more practical to have this stored downstairs because its easier to move it into the garden when i decide to do a photo story. Unfortunately i still need to trek up and down stairs for the fire engines ;D

My last DS order was kindly sorted out by Gordon and weighed in at rather substantial 2kg . Most of the bits and pieces have been sorted out into my small storage boxes and form the basis of my Playmobil 'parts department'. Any parts that were needed for projects are scattered all over the work bench
These are some of my storage boxes which contain my supply of parts from DS. I tend to horde parts and when the next DS order comes round its usually more of the same
Here is a glimpse of what is stored underneath my work bench. Apart from boxes of spare parts there are a also a lot of vehicles stored under here that don't form part of my main collection. Most of these are used as a source of spare parts or as the basis for future projects. That's not to say there aren't a few gems hidden in there that are destined for greater things. One of my prize possessions, a Pumper Truck from the 1980's is tucked away under here waiting to be returned to use.

A few close up pictures of the pile of parts and vehicles that are stored behind where i sit. I have included these because if you look closely enough you may see some 'projects' that are in various stages of being worked on .

This is the business end of things and where most of the interesting stuff happens. I guess that's why i have saved it until last. There are lots of different projects being worked on and experiments being carried out. There are a few odds and ends in these pictures that might look familiar to a couple of our members :toot:. I wont go to much into detail about whats going on here unless asked but suffice to say a lots happening .

Finally a few pictures of things that are going on right now. I wonder what is in the boxes with the Playmobil bag on top ?
What about this on the window sill  Any ideas Gordon ? ;D
(http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm181/Tim_W_Photos/GordonProject.jpg)
And finally quite a big project that will deffinatley get finished in the near future but what could it be ? I will post pictures if anyone guesses correctly (the vehicle at the back underneath the box with the red wheels on top)

WOW! You live up to your title of "Vehicle Specialist" very well :wow:! EXCELLENT ;D!

Hi Tim,
I am amazed at your collection and work place! Very cool 8-) :wow:
Best regards,

Hello Bill,
Thank you for the feedbak. I wondered if you would find the pictures, there are a couple more since you looked last. I think you might see a few things on and around my work bench that you will find particularly interesting :yup: :toot:
Tim
Hello Jimbo,
Thank you very much for the kind reply. I am glad you found the pictures interesting. Most of my collection has been built up with tings that my parents come home with from charity shops and car boot sales.

Nice photos Tim, I feel better about my own chaos when I see that I'm not alone ;D
Actually it looks like you keep everything relatively tidy, but ran out of storage space so it started to spill onto the floor. I have the same problem, and a lot less shelf space, so a lot more is sitting around in piles on the floor. I like the rows of Police cars and ambulances, do the crews have names?

Thanks for showing your secret work and collection room. I really like seeing pictures of members' collection and rooms

Hello again Tim !
As a matter of fact, I do see some very familar projects in process ! I can't wait :woohoo:! It's fantastic to see other members into the modern, city life, construction, fire rescue, & EMS themes with excellent ideas !
-
Thanks for the insight into your workroom, Tim. It's interesting that you can find 95% of stuff without trouble. I find the same until I tidy up, then I can't find anything!
You've some interesting stuff going on there Tim and I look forward to seeing the projects completed. I've some ideas if what some are. I think the one for me is another roof, although it looks much longer than the one I collected from the post office today - thank you.
I wish I had a space like that. :(

ahh the master playmobil craftsman toy shop :lens: It truly is a wonder of the collectors world . I bet even if you showed it to "normal" people they would see a room full of broken toys , but not us here . We see treasures :inlove:
-
Thank you for sharing your workshop photos with us Tim!! It is nice to see a working shop space and as Rasputin was quick to note, we see beyond the perceived clutter to the creative processes at work behind the scenes. It must be nice to have a dedicated space to work in.

Hello Martin,
Thank you for the kind feedback. I think what you said was spot on, that's what i keep telling myself anyway . I am glad to see that i am not alone in having an organised mess on the floor due to lack of space. I really must solve my storage problem by getting those shelves. At the moment the crews ambulance/police crews don't have names but i plan on changing that in the future when post a thread on the forum. I have to say that most of the officers in my fire service do have names :-[. There will be more posted on this soon ;)
Tim
Hello LHAAP,
Thank you for the kind reply, i am glad you found the pictures interesting. As you probably noticed there is quite a lot to see if you look closely :).
Tim
Hello Bill,
I thought you might find a few interesting things if you looked closely at the work bench pictures. Infact there is quite a lot to see if you know where to look ;).
Tim
Hello Gordon,
Thank you very much for the kind feedback. These pictures were taken after the great tidy up which we discussed a few months back. I guess you can imagine what it was like back then  I am quite lucky to have the room available to work in, i don't know what i would do if i didn't ???. I guess i would probably have to invest in a shed in the back garden because i wouldn't have space in my bed room.
I am glad the roof arrived safe! I was beginning to worry slightly that it had gone astray. The picture of the window does indeed show your roof ! Its the same one as before it just looks a little different because the plastic hasn't been glued on yet. There are also a few things for you that are sitting on the work bench ;)
Tim
Hello Rasputin
Thank you for the kind feedback. Its great to be able to share stuff with like minded people. I think people tend not to see past the 'toy' aspect of things and are quick to judge us on our hobby. Its nice to see that everyone who has replied can see past the untidy clutter as well . I think one of the projects i am working on would be just up your street, especially when it came to large logging operations ;). If you look at the last pictures you might get a glimpse of it hidden under the junk on my work bench.
Tim
Hello Gepetto
Thank you very much indeed for your kind reply. I found the pictures quite interesting myself as it gave me a different insight into things. It was allmost like looking at it from a different aspect. It certainly is great having a dedicated place to work on my projects. I was saying to Gordon that i don't know what i would do if i didn't have such a room. One of the options would be a shed in the garden :).

If you could just move that box that is resting on top of it we might be able to get a better perspective . If it is the one i think you are working on it looks long with some sort of arm on the front or back and a loader cab . Is it some sort of harvester or log skidder ? I sure got enough of my business partners skiders to last me a lifetime 8} . In our Playmo forest ( like Bills Fire department ) we have unlimited operating capital so we do it all via helicopter removals .
-
Hello Rasputin,
It is quite difficult to see under all the junk . I dont know if it would come in usefull for removing trees but if any equipment got stuck or needed pulling out then this is the peice of kit for the job. I suppose you could use it to remove stubbourn tree stumps or to clear roads aswell.
It is indeed a bulldozer, similar to the picture you posted not long back for Bill.
-
well bulldozers are a very common heavy piece of equipment on the larger commercial jobs . I was hoping with the recent mining sets that playbobil would have made a D9 or similar . The one that they have is so tiny and more of a piece of farm equipment than a construction dozer . After i saw Bills roll bars ( from the dino ) used on his brush fire equipment i have been wondering what to order, to make some sort of Roll Over Protection ( ROPS ) for the tiny dozer .
Your project looks very interesting and i will look forward to seeing its completion

Hi Tim can you discuss some of the tools you find yourself using the most (RE: your stash of tools, drawing boards, etc.).
My customizing kit is still pretty primitive--
1) A can of spray paint primer that melds to plastic
2) A dull x-acto knife to gnash through ply-paper
3) Craft glue
4) detergent ("Bartender's Friend") to rub-off factory paint jobs
-
WOW! ... ... :(o):
I just saw your thread, Tim ... :o
Incredible is the only word that comes to mind.
I think that almost everyone here would probably like to poke around and discover your treasures.
It would be very interesting to see what items in your collection would be considered a "treasure" by different members here at PF. I know that when I've had visitors, I'm usually amazed by how differently each person looks at my Playmobil collection.
Thank you very much for sharing your "secret" room, Tim.
I really enjoyed the "virtual" peek ...
Thanks again and all the best,
Richard

Hello Everyone,
Oops this thread seemed to have slipped me by and it seems i neglected to reply to some of the question :-[. I will answer them individually as normal :)9
Hello Rasputin,
I am sorry i missed your reply. I really should have popped back and checked sooner. It is a shame Playmobil didn't release a new bulldozer with the new mining sets seeing as they are commonly used in this line of work. We can only hope that they add to the theme in future but the way things are going with Playmobil at the moment who knows. They may even discontinue the mining theme after a year like most new themes they bring out lately.
I might be able to help you sort out some ROPS for your tiny dozer. If i get chance later i will have a play about with it to see what i can come up with. Once i have an idea i will give you a parts list.
Kindest Regards Tim
Hello Timotheos,
You have raised quite an interesting topic here. I will certainly list a few of the key tools i use for you. Infact i have been considering doing some 'How To Threads' but its hard to single out what people would find usefull.
The most important tool in my collection has to be my Dremmel Multi (mains powered). It is the most useful tool i have and it does the bulk of my work. I use two tools on this, small cutting discs and sanders. Obviously the bulk of my cutting work is done using the discs and the sander comes in to remove any excess or scrap material. I tend to use a Junior hacksaw for any cutting work that the Dremmel cant take on. Infact i do tend to use it quite a lot as well.
Just below the dremmel on the 'important tool to have list' is a decent set of files. I have a really mean metal working file which can be used to 'grate' large amounts of plastic away in a short time. Its extreme but used with care it can take on most jobs. It tends to put heavy scratches into plastic so i finish off with a small less aggressive file. Its vital to have these in different shapes because they can be used to get into difficult areas of different shapes. To finish off that aspect of things i also use different grades of wet and dry paper. I usually find a green pan scourer quite usefull for finishing things off. They can be quite harsh and do scratch surfaces but not as bad as wet and dry.
The next most used tool on the list is the Pin Vise Drill. It is a small hand operated drill which you hold in the palm of your hand and twist with your fingers. I would say 95% of my drilling is done with this alone. This is complemented by a set of small drill and large drill bits. Unfortunately due to the small size of the pin vise i have to widen some holes out with a broach or round file. Its hard to describe a broach without pictures so i will have to leave that for now
Add to this little lot a small set of screw drivers, a pair of stay sharp scisors, craft knife, pencil's, tweezers, small hammer, hair dryer and various different types of paint and you have an allmost complete list
I hope this helps you :). I am going to try and get something together for the 'How To' section of the forum if it will help. Please don't hesitate to ask any more questions.
Kindest Regards Tim
Hello Richard,
Thank you for the kind reply to my thread. I very rarely get to show anyone my work room let alone Playmobil collectors. I think Gordon is the only other collector who has ever seen it. I tend to see most of it as a complete mess ;D It would be nice to get another persons opinion and to see their reaction when they took a step inside. I tend to have lots and lots of sets stashed in their that i don't specifically collect but count because it Playmobil. Most of these are found by my parents in charity shops and at car boot sales. I am sure someone would see something i thought was normal and go mad for it because it was rare  I do have a small collection of MIB sets hidden under the very desk i am typing this message at. These rarely see the light of day because they are kept hidden away to protect them from the temptation to open them  I do have a white circus elephant somewere down there
Kindest Regards Tim
