Title: Five Favourite Klickies
Post by: Martin Milner on July 23, 2008, 20:09:54
I've been thinking about which of my hundreds of Klickies are my favourites, and I finally narrowed the choice to five.

Here's my current top five - I'd like to see yours. Mine are almost all exactly as they came out of the box. Here they are, in the order I acquired them, not necessarily the order they were produced in.

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/Martin_Milner/Favourite%20Five/Pirate.jpg) [1991-3] Hook-hand Pirate from set 3749.
I bought this set while still at University or soon after; this guy's been with me for over 15 years. He was my first disabled klicky, and also the first with bare feet. He showed me it was OK for an adult to still collect toys intended for pre-teens. I bought some other Pirate sets around that time (2054 and 3791 for sure), but apart from setting them up for a while to look at and play with briefly, I didn't start collecting Klickies in large numbers, and I didn't buy any large sets like buildings or ships. Happily I also didn't throw them out, sell them, or worse, give them away. Body printing was just coming in at that time, but many klickies still had plain bodies, and the three in this set were all plain. Modern hook-hands have a turning hook, so this figure is unusual in having a fixed hook.

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/Martin_Milner/Favourite%20Five/Sherlock.jpg) [1994] 4501 Sherlock Holmes, the first Special.
I must've still been checking out toyshops occasionally, or I would never have spotted this guy, and I bought the Vampire at the same time. This figure is so clearly Sherlock Holmes (though perhaps a little fatter than the literary figure), and so perfect. I only bought the one, curses, thinking that one was enough. The start of the Specials meant I could add occasional figures to my secret hoard, without major impact on my pocket, or feeling I had some incurable addiction.

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/Martin_Milner/Favourite%20Five/Devil.jpg) [1999] 4561 - Li'l Devil.
I kept checking toyshops and buying occasional Specials that caught my eye, until this little guy came along. Collectobil has him labelled "Halloween Costume", but he's so clearly NOT a kid dressed up, but a horny li'l devil. I love the way you can position his hat to give a variety of daft expressions. He sat on my desk at work for several years, charming anyone who passed, until I foolishly gave him away to a needy child at Christmas: I won't make that mistake again! So this figure is a replacement, but still a great favourite.

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/Martin_Milner/Favourite%20Five/Legionnaire.jpg) [2007] Legionnaire from set 4271.
This set got me back into Playmobil last year. I had invested in a Viking Longship in 2003, but having assembled it, it sat gathering dust, and didn't spark further purchases. The Romans were a "wow" moment. I was passing through the small toy department of a local store with my wife, saw these and immediately bought them, then after I got them home, went straight back (it's about a mile away) and bought the warship, the tent, and the catapault. This guy was the spark that brought me here. Sadly when I went back the next week to get more, the store was closing down, and the shelves had been cleared. I set off in a bit of a fever for Hamleys in Central London, bought a few sets there, then John Lewis in Oxford Street where I got the Arena. My wife tagged along, amused and delighted at my uncontainable excitement. My wife is wonderfuly supportive of this strange hobby, and often helps with photography.

(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/Martin_Milner/Favourite%20Five/Pierrot.jpg) [2007] 4514 - Pierrot.
I didn't buy this guy when he first came out in 1994, but in 2007 after we'd been discussig clowns here on Playmofriends. I checked eBay, and in a month had acquired almost every clown every produced. The Pierrot is not really the slapstick sort of Clown like the modern Circus ones. I like the purity of his simple three colour outfit. I've added shoulderpads and changed his red cuffs for black and white, but even straight from the box I think he's a perfect Pierrot. I added the white shoulderpads from the 4670 knight, and then changed one for black to see how it looks. This guy sits on my desk at work, and has recently been joined by a whole band of Pierrots with tuba, saxaphones, trumpets, lute, squeezebox and tambourine.

Interesting Topic/Thread you've started, Martin ...  :wow:

Even though they're probably not my top five, I love  ALL the Klickys that you've chosen.

I'm off now to think about which "five" would be at the top of my list (and why). I don't think that this is going to be a very easy decision to make ...  :klickywink:

Thanks for starting this. GREAT IDEA !!!

All the best,
Richard

Great idea, Martin ...
I specially loved the descriptions and the reasons why you put along - thanks.
I'll go off and think of my fav. 5 now.

(I tried to do this yesterday ... I listed a looong list, and put refferences (by hyperlink) to all of them, to collectobil. Then, at the last moment, I pushed a wrong button, and ... Well, you know :-[ ) It was 2:00 in the morning (almost), and I thought I was too @#$%&! playmonut to have been to such hour in the internet for something that I lost in a second ... The good part of the story was that I selected 5, after all ...)

Lovely idea, Martin! Thx :)

Here goes the favourite one, and attached, the other 4. I don't have them anymore, but had them all, once ... They've been my favourites, by heart, and memory! :)

I have thought about this question of yours Martin and it is a lot harder than i thought . I keep going over the specials and there are so many great ones and then i start looking into the sets with all the characters those offer as well .  :eh?: I think i would have an easier time with my favorite animals or vehicles . I guess i just find special uniqueness in every one so to narrow it down to 5 is just not possible for me .

It is harder if you look at all of them ... But the question has less to do with the (huge) list of klickys, and more with your life ...

What klicky(s) meant more to you, when, why? Martin's idea might be thought this way ...
It's what I think ...

I'm having the same problem, Rasputin ...

I don't know if I'm going to be able to pick 5, but I'm still thinking about it.

In the spirit of true adult collectors, maybe we ought to list our five least liked klickies.

My camera is broken, but let me list my five favorite, with pictures later.
I've added comments in tribute to Martin's touching epigrams.

1) Sir Turk (center; from the Red Dragon Knight add-on pack)
He looks most like me.  We have a lot in common.  And that's why I asked him to be my mascot.  And he said yes.

2) Sir Assyrian
Because he is my brother.  I trust him. (First figure from left)

3) Cleopatra
She's one of the most interesting figures I have.

4) Roman Auxiliary, Triarii, Cavalryman, whatever you want him to be

He's a jack of all trades Roman and devilishly hard to get in sufficient quantities.

5) Indian Grad Student
The one that didn't leave me standing on "the long and winding road"...

I did try to think which ones were important to me in some way but to tell you the truth i can almost tell you where i got every one ( ebay, local used or new) . The only one on my office desk is my avatar and all the others are either running around the office or waiting to be opened .

Playmobil just does too good of a job in creating unique characters .

I guess for some people this might be easier as they have "best friends",  "good guy" or "bad guy" and other titles they give people . I just try to find the unique talent in everybody and try to find a way to utilize it for a mutual benefit (including bank robbers).  ;)

Hello, master Timmy! I tried to link things from PlaymoDB, once, and it didn't work out very nicely ... Maybe it's because Heather sometimes uses gif images, I'm not sure about it ... But it happened so, with me, and it may be happening with many playmofriends, as it's going on with me, right now: I can't see you pics. Only an empty box, with an "x". I'll try from other computer units, but I thought you might use knowing this ...

Good idea on the epigrams! Maybe I'll do this yet, somehow, if I have the chance.

Thanks for sharing your favourite ones, Justindo! :) I'll try to spot them all, in Collectobil, as soon as I have more time ... I've been running a bit, and sometimes my own playmo activities take most of my free time, so I don't spend the time I used to, in Collectobil anymore ...

Pictures might help. But, sometimes, it isn't possible ... :(

See ye around!

I believe direct links to the pictures on playmobdb are disabled because ebay morons were putting direct links into the pictures chewing up the bandwidth.  Now they have to steal the pictures to put in the auctions   ;)

But you can direct link to the set for example:

Well... ...its not too easy with favourite klickies...
If I would have a clear preference, why should I have thousands of them?  :P

I restricted myself to original klickies...
...so my favourites are:

Well, I named only four as the fifth place is reserved for all the others not mentioned here.  :yup:

Hi Socrates, great klickies.  The egg knight must have been a great special.

I discovered that as well this weekend.  I'll leave things as is, and try to borrow a camera to take custom photos.

I think they make these digital cameras to go bad after so many years.  Ours is only five years old.

Well... ...its not too easy with favourite klickies...
If I would have a clear preference, why should I have thousands of them?  :P

I restricted myself to original klickies...
...so my favourites are:
  • The famous blue knight from an easter egg.
Perfect for this series a unique figure with a beautiful golden imprint on its armor...
  • A handsome Mexican from the Goldmine-Set.
I just love this man... He goes perfectly fine as a Mariachi as well...
  • Another easter special: This wonderful pirate with a skull-tattoo...
  • The Malteser-Special from Malta... It is an extraordinary nice figure.

Well, I named only four as the fifth place is reserved for all the others not mentioned here.  :yup:

best,

Those are four of the BEST for sure, Socrates !!! Good choices !!! ...  :wow:

There are two that definitely have made it but after that it starts to get harder and harder to narrow it down

well gus, now your curiosity will be satisfied.  :yup:
 ...my favourite is the 4911, 2002's easter egg. i don't know why but this was the klicky i most enjoyed buying.
 :love: ... then, there is the classic 3385 (the first pirate, in 1978);
 :love: ... the 3382 form 1986 (he is a bit fat just like me);
 :love: ... the 4917 easter egg from 2006 (i just like the color scheme and the skull);
 ... and a "strange" set, the argentinian / antex 3570 (one of the few sets that totally surprised me when i opened the box, with its odd colors).
they are all pirates, of course (although, "from a distance" i also love other sets from other families).
great idea for a thread tim, thanks.

It took a while, but here are my five fav.'s.

The First lady is from the very first set I bought for myself as an adult. I still think she's one of the best medieval ladies ever. The Southern Belle (from the Red Egg) gave a lot of excitement in the community when she was released. And rightly so, I think.
The City Mercenary from the early eighties is a love from my childhood. I still think that the helmet he carries is the best Playmobil ever produced. The Magdeburger Reiter, I like him ... just because I do

Those are some great choices Mark, I think you're right that the first lady is a great medieval lady, what a shame they don't produce her anymore.

Southern Belle is another great. These two in a blister pack please Playmobil, if you're listening.

Is the Lord a fatty? I can't tell from your picture, but I'm guessing he has the same body as the Sherlock Holmes.

Oddly the helmet you like the most is the one I like the least! I'm busy replacing these on some Spanish figures I have with this rather than the proper Spanish helmet.

Bogro:

Am I mistaken, or the last two are customs by you ::) ?
(I don't spot them in any available set ... :-[ )

The lord is nice, but I don't like the prince/king ...

@ Martin: The Lord uses the same body as the very first Special - the Detective. I know he's known as "Sherlock Holmes"; but Sherlock has never ever been shown as a "fatty" but more as a slim and even of fragile posture.
As to the helmets: if you're getting rid of them - can I have them pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease? Rather than having them collect dust somewhere in the bottoms of your drawers ????

@ Gustavo: Only the last one is a custom. The Magdeburger Reiter is only being sold in a Museum in Magdeburg, Germany. His body is coming back to haunt you though - it's being used in the new Kozak Special in 2009  ;).
I think he's great as his coat is definitly likee the early lords used to wear. In other words - a great medieval custume .

But that's just me, I'm afraid ...

Yeah, I know the real Sherlock isn't fat, I was using the name given him on Collectobil.

Sure you can have the helmets, send me your address in a PM and they're yours. I think I have 14 of them. Not the chromed one, the dull silver ones. They're not dusty, they're dust-free inside my storage boxes.  ;D

Bogro

I hadn't taken the closer look, in the large version. Now that I klicked, I have to admit that it is a nice custom. I really thought you had done it ;D

(They've been using these fashinable crowns for the new kings, that don't look so medieval as the original 3331, and this old crown, used in this klicky you found for us ... It's used in the old queen, if I'm not mistaken. It's a good & simple crown. I miss it, together with the old 3331 king crown ...)

Thanks for sharing!

It's good to know that some museums have the sense to sell Playmobil figures.

I went to the British Museum yesterday (more on this another time), where they have a special children's giftshop. There was a lot of space given over to Roman stuff, even a set of Roman pyjamas (unfortunately not in my size), but no Playmobil. If I was a Playmobil representative, or a British Museum giftshop buyer, I'd want to see some Playmobil romans figures there - either the 4271 set, or just individually packed legionnaires and centurions, which would easily sell at £3 apiece, a 50% mark up on purchase price, and I'm sure they could do a deal for bulk purchasing.

Now multiply that by the number of Museums with Roman content across the UK...  bearing in mind the Romans occupied large areas of England for nearly 400 years, there's a loot of them.

Basiclally, they'd sell like hot cakes, and help boost Playmobil's presence in the marketplace.

Golly, they're so shortsighted, I'm going to email customer services and ask why they haven't done it yet. Maybe they'll employ me to do it.

WOW!!! :cloud9: I'd be really happy to be employed by Playmobil to be their representative in any circumstance ... So, do go for it!! If you're that fortunate, you'll give many (some -- at least me) a big deal of hope! :yup:

Well no surprises here, my favourite klicky from my favourite set, merry mens feast 3627.  :-[

(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/1246/070q.jpg) (http://img84.imageshack.us/i/070q.jpg/)

Robin Hood from my old castle 3446. Some of the old klickies are timeless and have a simplistic charm to them.  ;D

(http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/5228/074ky.jpg) (http://img717.imageshack.us/i/074ky.jpg/)

Spanish Knight from 3030, or Don Pedro as my daughter calls him. I love the yellow feather and the eagle on his chest.

(http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/6584/076dx.jpg) (http://img715.imageshack.us/i/076dx.jpg/)

Little boy blue from hunting party 3628. Definition of renaissance dandy and has a man purse(satchel).

Barkeep from the merry mens feast 3627, or Oliver Reed as i call him due to the mutton chops. I don't know if he drinks as much as the late great Olly did, but he certainly looks like him.

Really hard to narrow it down to five, i could have posted twenty five klickies here.
