This news might interest the gamers out there (or the parents with young children ;)).
Playmobil are planning to release a Pirate-themed game for the Nintendo DS handheld console.
Press release here:
http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/DS/Playmobil+Pirates:+Blackbeard's+Treasure/news.asp?c=6858 (http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/DS/Playmobil+Pirates:+Blackbeard's+Treasure/news.asp?c=6858)
Our youngest son has the Lego Star Wars game and has asked us to get him the Indiana Jones one for his birthday.
I have a feeling this Pirate one will end up on his Christmas "wish list" once he's seen the pics. :)
It does say in the article that the game will be released first in Germany, but hopefully it will be introduced in other countries later, just as the Hype, Laura, and Alex Builds His Farm games were. :crossed:

Thanks for sharing these news, Sylvia :wow: The game certainly looks nice and I have just bought myself a new Nintendo DS, so it couldn't be better
Unfortunately it doesn't seem that you can link directly to pictures from the site.

Oopsie. It worked on the preview. :-[
I've gone back and added the images as attachments instead.

Definitly a must-have for me!
Now, I only have to convince Wilma that we need a DS :-[

Hello and thanks for the info, Sylvia ...
Wonder if Nintendo (and Playmobil) will also release it for their Wii ... ???
I was a bit amused by the reviewer's comments about Playmobil:
"It only seems natural, then, that other toy brands would want to get in on the act. And in has come Playmobil. You know, the plastic toy for lazy, imagination-starved children because everything came pretty much pre-built."
Hmmm ... :hmm:
Is it possible that Playmofriends are all "lazy, imgination-starved adult children?" ...
BTW ... the reviewer at that website welcomes comments from their readers ... ;)
All the best,
Richard

I'd love to comment, but as I have no imagination I can't think of anything to say! LOL
There's a great pirate game called Sid Meier's Pirates on the Sony PSP, nothing to do with Playmobil but everything to do with pirates.
I had this as a PC game years ago and now it's portable I'm hooked all over again.

There has been an update to the initial press release on the Pocket Gamer website:
Playmobil Pirates likely for the UK too
Berlin-based publisher HMH Interactive has since been in touch to confirm it will be releasing Playmobil Pirates across Europe in September (it comes translated into French, Spanish, Dutch and English).
Its publisher says it's also in negotiation with UK publishers to bring it to our shores, so with a little luck we'll also be able to get our hands on Lego's closest rival a little after we've finished playing with Lego Indiana Jones.
I was a bit amused by the reviewer's comments about Playmobil:
"It only seems natural, then, that other toy brands would want to get in on the act. And in has come Playmobil. You know, the plastic toy for lazy, imagination-starved children because everything came pretty much pre-built."
That comment irked me somewhat. They've obviously never actually come into contact with children playing with Playmobil. You don't have to build things to be able to use your imagination. ::)
Lego is a fantastic toy. I have no argument with that at all. I have rarely heard Playmobil fans rubbishing the Lego product, so I don't know why Lego fans sometimes feel compelled to make these negative comments. All it does is show their ignorance. :(
Edit:
I just read the comments (http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/reader_review.asp?e=6858&t=40306&sec=4&p=Playmobil+Pirates%3A+Blackbeard%27s+Treasure+announced+for+DS&et=news) posted to the original review.
It seems the webmaster actually likes Playmobil but he tweaked the author's comments about Playmobil just to make the article more edgy! :hmm:

Which raises the question - how much can you rely on any reviews they do of games?

Well I think I got a climbdown.
I'd be pretty peeved if an editor changed my wording without my agreement.

I wouldn't ... I'd just kill him >:D >:(

It's great that PM is releasing commercial-quality games. I guess the Playstation target platform also means no PC (personal computer) releases...
The screenshots suggest the game is a bit kiddy-ish (in contrast to Lego's excellent Star Wars computer game series).
To Martin:
The Total War series is coming out with a Caribbean-themed addition in 2008/2009 that promises 3D ship-to-ship fighting (the current total war games handle ship-fighting abstractly).
As for edginess:
In about ten years, people are going to be so sick of contrived edginess that sober commentaries will come back into vogue. Blog culture, like American talk radio, seems to obligate vindictive assaults on at least one topic per hour.

Interesting that you would say that about Lego fans.
Before there was a Playmobil community, I visited the Lego newsgroups searching for Lego fans who might also be Playmobil fans. I was constantly flamed by abusive Lego fans. They used language that would have made a sailor's parrot blush ... :-[
They seem to be a strange bunch.
All the best,

I think Lego draws the Asperger's Syndrome, blunt-speaking engineering misfits whereas Playmobil draws the failed artists.

Hello, Timmy ...
I think Lego draws the Asperger's Syndrome, blunt-speaking engineering misfits whereas Playmobil draws the failed artists.
Had someone else written your comment, prior to my meeting you here at Playmofriends, Timmy, I might have pretty much agreed with it.
However, since I've been somewhat "enlightened' by your personal perception of others, I would probably have to add "failed philosophers" to your "failed artists" statement ... ;)
All the best,
Richard

why "failed ..." ?
-
Indeed why not aspiring?
I've seen a lot more artistic stuff done with Playmobil than some of the efforts that carry off the Turner prize annually.
I think Tim is in danger of being perceived as a "glass is half empty" kind of guy.

Perhaps we could look at Timmy in a positive way ... ;)
Not as a "pot stirrer," nor as an agitator, and certainly not as a "trouble maker" ... ;D
Maybe he can be a bit of an "irritant" at times ... However, if we can think of ourselves as beautiful "oysters," then Timmy brings out the "pearl" in all of us ...
So, perhaps Timmy deserves our gratitude for making us think and reflect upon who and what we are.
All the best my friends,
Richard (the optimistic and artistic philosopher) ...

I didn't meant to be a "Timmy-basher". It's just that I think that if someone thinks or feels he or she is a philosopher/ artist/ whatever; then that person can be just that. If someone's not the worlds best - who cares. We can't all be a Descartes/ Van Gogh/ Bruce Springsteen. But it's more a way of being then a question of how good one is...
But that's just my own 0.02 ...

Hello, Bogro ...
I didn't mean to be a "Timmy-basher".
Perhaps we shouldn't all be so quick to be "nice." Who knows? Maybe Timmy "enjoys" a good bashing every now and then ... ;)
All the best,
Richard (who's personally not into different strokes)

The discussion here has diverged into a totally new (and fascinating) area, so I've split off Gus' last post and created a new topic:
Can someone do art with Playmobil? & What is art? (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=2254.0)
Please continue to add your comments. :)
