Title: PbA is it in playmobil ?
Post by: Rasputin on April 20, 2008, 18:31:16
i just can not remember or find if Playmobil uses Bisphenol A ( PbA - (CH3)2C(C6H4OH)2 ) as an ingredient in the plastic .

Over the last few months we have been throwing away all our plastic that is contaminated with the chemical .

oh yes i would also like to know if anybody knows if it is in legos as well ?

8} this possibility seems to make all our discussions about the problems-bans-what could be better in the playmobil world a bit unimportant.
:hmm: although the toxic capabilities of pba look low, some children do like to chew their toys...

I believe an EU Directive required this to be removed from toys one or maybe two years ago.  It was around this time that the plastic of Playmobil became more soft and bendable, for example in the vehicles.

EDIT: The European Union introduced an outright ban on phthalates used in children's toys in 2005.

That's SCARY stuff, Rasputin!

Over the last few months we have been throwing away all our plastic that is contaminated with the chemical .

I think that we should all assume that all Playmobil manufactured in the last century (prior to 2000), is contaminated with this stuff.

And, I totally agree with you, Rasputin!

Everyone, please securely wrap all of your pre-2000 Playmobil and immediately send it to me for "proper disposal!" (Please don't worry about my health. I don't chew my toys ... anymore!)  ...

All the best,
Richard

I don't know whether it's the same plastic or the same family, but I found this

"Playmobil (Germany) - Letter January 1999: ‘Since summer 1992 we totally stopped to use any PVC and softeners in our products – The only item still including PVC is the jumping net of our fire brigade item number 3881, due to the fact that there is no material alternative.’"

Thank you for the info . :wow:

Richard i would be glad to send all my contaminated items to you for a small one time donation to my company . Then my best man will  will round up all the old items and ship them right out . thank you for the kind offer to saturate all the hazardous element into your body on my children's behalf . :'(

I remember something about why the toys became softer but could not remember when or why . it is sometimes quite frustrating with the helmets not staying on but if that is the reason i will manage to put up with it .

But, uh, seriously, Rasputin...  :hmm:
Don't they reach these conclusions by force-feeding rats ten times their body weight in concentrated chemical X?
