Hello Klicky-friends :)
I thought it might be interesting to see some pictures of the dioramas on the old PLAYMOBIL boxes. Everyone, who has something, is more than welcome to upload it. These old dioramas are so detailed and imaginative that it's hard to believe.
I start with seven dioramas from different themes.

Thanks for starting this thread, LHAAP. I look forward to seeing more, from you and other members. I'm not sure I've any PM with these dioramas one, but I'll have a look when I'm next in the loft.
-
great idea, and thank you for sharing. as a newer collector, there are sets shown that i had not noticed when i was thumbing through the collector 2. , like 3762, or because the photos are so small.

It's a shame they stopped doing these box dioramas, these ones are great. My favourite from this selection is 3746 featuring the hunter cheerfully waving to the cyclist before he blasts the hell out of one of the deer, all caught on camera by the wildlife photographer.
I can think of two possible reasons for stopping, either it was just too much trouble and they got lazy, or they were told to stop because the set contents were't sufficiently well displayed.
Modern rules and regulations for packaging probably point to the second explanation, though I think these could still replace the front of box pictures which are these days a trife lacklustre.
-
Box back dioramas are great or playmo art is what I like to call them.
I sent some to Sven the creator of the "Viking Five" and of course Svencentral and he dedicated a page to them.

That's a lovely "art page" Sven has there. The old PLAYMOBIL work of arts are something you don't find today :( Luckily we still have them and share them with each other ;)

Thanks for posting the pictures. Those are great dioramas! :yup:
Best regards,

Thanks, LHAAP ...
How about this one (3054) from the Pirate theme:

Lovely setting Richard - didn't those boys with the toy cannon come from the Victorian theme?

Hello, Martin ...
Lovely setting Richard - didn't those boys with the toy cannon come from the Victorian theme?
They did indeed! The "box art" back in those days wasn't limited to just the actual contents of the box (or the theme).

How about this one (3054) from the Pirate theme:
A very, very nice diorama. I have always loved (as all other themes 8}) the pirate dioramas - including the ones in the catalogues :)

Thanks for sharing your box scans!
I've always enjoyed studying the pics on the back of old set boxes! I especially like the occasional touches of humour because they give you a sense that the people responsible for setting up the dioramas really enjoyed what they were doing (... either that or they were trying to relieve boredom, but I prefer to believe the former reason ;)).
The wee cannon boys are a familiar feature on the back of the Victorian boxes. Here they can be seen larking about rather dangerously on the park fence. I'm positive the dog is contemplating relieving himself on the lamppost! :o ;D

Synchronicity!
I just received a blue 3739 car today off eBay, but couldn't find it on Playmodb without the set number.
I confess I'm confused by Playmobil's theme splits sometimes. I was looking at Citylife and Modern Living (what's the difference?) but there it was under Leisure.

I understand: even I get lost now and then. I started out with a wholesale grab of Collectobil's data, which classified things pretty logically, but as themes grew they got a little out of hand and needed to be split. Freetime is, generally, old enough to have solid-colour klickies while Leisure is newer. (Citylife needs to be split now, with the new sets.) When in doubt, tick a bunch of likely themes from the theme list (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/sets.pl) and pick Vehicle from the Focus pulldown at the bottom.
Lurching back to topic! I have quite a few dioramas in the "box-back" position on Inventory pages, but I'll be darned if I can remember which ones they are. Victorian might be a place to start. (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/sets.pl?theme=Victorian&sortby=&focus=&pics=on) The new version of the Inventory page shows not only multiple box pictures (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5339), but also allows for external links. You generous folks who have posted scenes for our enjoyment: shall I make external links to the forum or to Photobucket, or copy the files to host myself? Either's fine with me.
-
:love:i love the pirates' cave diorama (it's great to see it in such a large picture) and the circus one.
:wow:thank you all for posting such beautiful images and thank you lhaap for having such a fantastic idea.

Hello Heather
You can do what ever you want - do what is best for you. You're the boss ;)
-
Heather, you are more than welcome to use my box pics also. Whichever way you prefer to link them is fine with me. :yup:
I have a few more older boxes (mostly from the Victorian theme) and will scan them in and post them here as time permits. :)

Cool, thanks guys. I'll grab them, I think, in case other sources go offline, and they'll be all in one place. (Might shrink them a bit, but leave them as large as sensible.) I will do a roundup and make a "Your Set List" link of all of the ones I can find.
Cheers, Heather

Here's the remainder of older Victorian set boxes which I have.
I'm missing a few here and there, so perhaps other members will be able to fill in the gaps. :)

Those dioramas are wonderful 8-) Thank you so much for uploading them, Sylvia!
They are indeed, Sylvia, and thank you from me, too. The detail in them is excellent and quite amusing in places, for example, the small child in the pianist one more interested in his toys than the music.
-
My pleasure! :)
There does seem to be quite a lot going on in the pictures. :yup:
I've been trying to work out whether the boy in the 5404 diorama is begging. If not, I guess he could be in charge of selling the paintings which are lined up against the fence.
I found a few other old sets with dioramas on the back which I will upload later this week. :)
-

I think your second guess is right - he's the artist's son, in charge of sales while his dad continues painting.
Wonderful detail those dioramas, lots f charm and character, and I wish I'd bought some at the time.
I like the two Policeman shots - just one figure has been changed, but the ceowd are all the same! I guess French and German civilians in that era dressed much the same?
Is it too much to hope that Playmobil might re-release some of these sets as an Anniversary celebration, as they did with some Western sets? I'd especially love to have some of those children with their toys - the boy with a paper hat & the toy cannon is a wonderful piece!
-
i just realized i don't know when that aniversary should be, martin. :-[
i always thought playmobil started to sell sets in 1974 but the 25 year's special edition schooner - 3133 piratenschiff - was released, as far as i know, in 2001 (although it says 2002 in collectobil). 8}
could 1976 be the "official" year? 1975? ???
that would postpone the next important aniversary (35 years) to 2011 or 2010. :'(
i am confused... :hmm:
-
2004 was the 30th anniversary and that makes 1974 the first year. Sample figures appeared at the 1974 Nuremburg Toy Fair and the first sets were in the shops in the autumn of that year.
-
thanks playmofire, for such a definitive answer. :wow:
this means that the next anniversary will be in 2009 (35 years). great. :yup:

This isn't quite a box diorama, but some interesting pictures from a mini-catalogue from 1997. I felt it better to add to this thread than start a new one. These are blown up a bit from the original size, hence the grainy quality.
I think this rather nicely illustrates that the Medieval Castle and Fantasy themes were initially treated as quite separate.

Oh for the days when ships had proper white sails without rips in them!

although, they still are for me, for i just received my 3550 mib that i am now building (a review will be posted very soon). :)

Hm, two very important playmopirates, in this picture ... "Blackbeard" (3858 (http://www.collectobil.com/images/items/3858.jpg) & 3939) and the (in)famous one of 3863 (http://www.collectobil.com/images/items/3863.jpg), for whom I have no name ...
Thanks, Martin! 8}
About the sails, well, it's a shame but, "that's toy for kids", it has to be colour'ul now ... ;)

Bumping this up in response to Giorginettos suggestion of a box back diorama archive.
My personal favorite isn't here . i will have to get a shot of it as I have it here. The Playmospace shipyard one, where they are building a new ship.
BTW - Heather posts box back diorama shots on PlaymoDB when she has been provided with them.
-
Thanks for bumping this thread up, Tim! I have a few pics that I want to upload, but can't because I'm on my phone.
-
it's a great idea to put together all our box diorama pics in one single thread - if I may suggest, that thread (wheather it's this or a new one) should be a sticky so it gets updated constatly :) - what do you all think?

The last pictures of the drunk lord falling off his chair is just superb !!! Its a shame playmobil has lost its sense of huor and style and there are no dioramas as such today, todays are boring and clinical and over too politically correct, these old ones are all ultra cool !!!!
-
one more...
-
and a Lyra one... its nowhere near superb as the previous ones but it has its own magic...
I will dig out a few more boxes I have and take a few pics the following days.
-
Thanks for posting the Space ones, that was just the one I was thinking of.
-
Something beautifull really got lost since they stopped putting these on the back of the boxes, although I must say its very convenient that you can see all of the content on the back since sometimes you dont see everything on the front.
The beauty of it is that no effects are used aside maybe a bit of landscape and flying space craft, the clickies are placed in a way that anyone can place them in, its really inspiring. And it always makes me smile to see all those clickies going about their daily business.
Here they are not even depicting battles which clearly shows a different more peacefull direction from Geobra at the time.
-
Thanx for the great pics.

Thank you for sharing those old but great pictures with us Tim! It's amazing to see Damo's avie's cat getting around so much, & the monkey drinking coffee out of a cup !
-
What adds to the brilliance of that diorama is that theres a cat on the roof of the wagon and a guy with a wrench climbing up a sign like a monkey while that monkey is just standing there on the ground drinking coffee.
Only thing that could have made it better would have been if the monkey was looking up at the mechanic guy while sipping from his cup. :)
-
Thank you Tim for posting these beatifull, i look at the m over and over. despite being so unrealistic the photos of the spaceships being constructed are just superb !!!! Also the western and the modern /circus pictures and the pictures from the helicopter etc are just awesome. Shame really playmobil has abandoned such creative dioramas for something more ' clinical ' and 'politically correct ' if you ask that is fine of course but doesnt come anywhere near the magic and spark that these old dioramas have . thank you sir !!!

I agree, the smoke coming out of the back of the race car as it starts up !
Although I too miss those nice old dioramas, I'd say that the same nich is filled, at least for me, with their fantastic new animations like the movies for Future Planet and Top Agents. I think that they inspire just as much creativity as these old scenes :yup:.

The back of the box was the same as the front (at least mine). But there are pics on the sides... (I'm taking pics to EVENTUALLY put on playkingdoms, but it's a hateful task, so... not uploaded. :-[ )
