Hello, Marty ...
How about some very detailed how-to instructions (with photos and where to buy materials), so that we can also have some tee shirt fun?
All the best,
Richard

Ok, no problem and first of all sorry for my poor english... No pictures are needed because it's very simple.
I buy this special paper in my local hobby shop and I supose it's available in other ones. If not, you can check on Ebay. In the beginning I bought it in the USA and it's about $ 2.-/sheet.
Two versions are available:
- For ink printers but you need a special product in spray to protect the decal sheet before being able to use it on the model
- For laser printers. I use this one because you don't need the spray. You can use your decals just after printing. If no color laser printer available you can print on photo paper with you ink printer and go to your copy shop and ask they use your paper for the copy.
After all that cut your designs and plunges in water during 30 seconds. Slides the decal into the surface and leave it to dry. You can varnish it with a semigloss coat for a strong protection. I use Micro Set to adapt the decals on irregular surfaces.
And that's all ;)

That's very cool stuff... Thank you so much for sharing... :D
The decal-sheets are quite expensive here... I found an offer of about 12€ for two sheets... :hmm:
...but maybe I just did not found the right store...
So far, we customized the tee's just with ordinary printer labels...
but tatoo-decals are definitely a MUST. :yup:
How are you filling up the sheets? you must have a million labels on spare now?!
:o

Your English is wonderful !!!
However, the process is not very simple for me ... :-[
Are you using a special kind of decal paper? If so, can it be bought online? How about the spray for the ink jet printers? Can it also be bought online? Do you know where?
Also, it looks like you have developed some techniques that seem very simple to you, but appear a bit confusing to a first timer like me.
Thanks, Marty.
All the best,
Richard

I hope is not a problem if I leave this links, they are just examples to help you looking for the correct product.
If you want to try with your inkjet printer you can buy here http://www.mcgpaper.com/decalkits.html (http://www.mcgpaper.com/decalkits.html)
In the beginning I purchase the waterslide sheets on Ebay. An exemple http://cgi.ebay.es/5-Sheets-Clear-Laser-Alps-or-Color-Copier-Decal-Paper_W0QQitemZ200180249306QQihZ010QQcategoryZ86728QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.es/5-Sheets-Clear-Laser-Alps-or-Color-Copier-Decal-Paper_W0QQitemZ200180249306QQihZ010QQcategoryZ86728QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem)
I never try with inkjet paper, always laser printer. The only difference is you can use your decals directly, no spray needed.

First off i would like to say what great t shirts you made
Then i had a question about the decals . Are they the ones that come with model kits that you cut each individual one out , soak it in water and it then it slides off its backing , then you gently use a toothpick to adjust it on your model and allow to dry ? It is a very thin clear slimy type of decal ? If they are it is great to hear that you can print them yourself .
-
Yes Rasputin, it is the same kind of decals. Just one difference, you can buy Letter size sheets in white or like in my case clear (transparent). Another big difference with professional decals is we can't print white. The best results are with light color torsos like my white t-shirts.

Thank you very much for the information and the links, Marty!
I especially like the step by step instructions from McGonigal Paper & Graphics.
(Also, it's good to know that they make "white" decal paper so that you can make white decals!)

Thanks again and all the best,

I have written some months ago a section on my homepage (http://www.jr-x.de/playmobil/customizing/sticker.html#decals) about decals; maybe this might be useful for somebody too.
I made some experiences in the past with inkjet sheets (transparent ones), but wasn't satisfied. The colors were not covering like I wished to do and one of the main drawbacks, as already mentioned, is that you cannot print white. So wanting to use white you just have to use the transparent one on white objects (what's not always possible) or using the white sheet; the later one has the drawback that you have to cut out it very carefully to have no white edges -- and to be honest: in case using white decal sheets you also can use white regular sticker sheets (which probably might be much cheaper and easier in handling).
Using inkjet sheets you have, as already mentioned, to use some spray for the colors not to run when put into the water. For this, Richard you can also use simple clear varnish, either by brush or by spray/airbrush.
I personally prefer ordering my personally designed decals at a printer, found at the Web (cf. link above). He has the possibility to make printouts in much higher resolution than I know from any laser/inkjet printer and even can print white, gold, and silver.
Some samples for these special decals are the

- Police Logo (http://www.jr-x.de/playmobil/customizing/fem_cyclistofficer_1.jpg) on the female cycle police officer's breast which uses gold
- Dogs rescue staff logo (http://www.jr-x.de/playmobil/customizing/rescuedogs_3.jpg), also on its trailer (http://www.jr-x.de/playmobil/projekte/trailer_6_en.jpg) (also cf. the Web page (http://www.jr-x.de/playmobil/customizing/rescuedogs.html) where you can see a closeup demonstrating the high resolution)

Hello, Jochen ...
I have written some months ago a section on my homepage (http://www.jr-x.de/playmobil/customizing/sticker.html#decals) about decals; maybe this might be useful for somebody too.
Thank you for reminding us about your excellent decal instructions.
Just as most of us know that there are several different, yet very good methods for disassembling klickies, I am always looking for alternative techniques for customizing.
In my opinion, it would be a good idea for someone who is thinking about making decals to explore many different options until they find the best one for them.
Thanks again for the links to your outstanding website, Jochen.
All the best,
Richard

Hi Jochen, I'm just starting to experiment with decals.
I made my own decals without any problem, but now I need white/gold prints to stick to a dark background. So, I've been reading about these special Alps or Oki printers that do the trick. Unfortunately these are very rare. Apart from that I don't think it's worth the investment if you only want to print a few decals, right ???
I had a look at your site and saw a reference to Andreas Nothaft. Is this guy still printing decals?
Cheers,
DD.

Sorry, for the delayed answer: yes, as far as I know he is (if I remember correctly he sent me recently a newsletter).

Excellent T-Shirts Marty and I like your figures also, after reading Little Jo's articles on decals a while ago I was able to locate this sheets in a local hobby shop, they about $2 each and are sold in packs of 6. I am very curious to try this to create some new and different coats-of-arms for my medieval figures, thanks for stirring this pot Marty!
