Title: GrahamB’s collection
Post by: GrahamB on February 04, 2024, 17:59:13
I thought I would display a few interesting parts and sets, especially things which are a little harder to find. I will try to add to this regularly, though I doubt I will be as diligent as Jim Matterer, who manages to post something new nearly every day.

First up, a fairly recent part, from set 70909, Starter Pack Dino Rise: Fire Scorpion, released in May 2022. I liked the look of this beastie, so added its part number (30 65 0455) to a recent parts order. It cost £4.30; set against what the set would have cost at the time (£15.99 at Playmobil.co.uk), this is quite good value- the set contains this scorpion, 4 small scorpions, some crystals, some bones, rocky scenery, one klicky (Ian) and accessories.

(https://i.postimg.cc/d0wc1s6j/IMG-7466.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/63bkYdXM/IMG-7467.jpg)

As you can see, the Fire Scorpion has a flexible tail and sting, flexible front limbs and chelae (pincers). It is studded with orange jewels. The ‘walking’ legs don’t move. The translucent orange and red parts look great. Fully extended it measures 16cm, so it should give a nasty shock to any klicky it meets!

(https://i.postimg.cc/ZRqk8w19/IMG-7468.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/fy36FJWD/IMG-7469.jpg)

When I first picked it up, I was strongly reminded of Lego, possibly because the tail articulation looks quite like Lego Technic!
A very nice animal and quite reminiscent of a real scorpion.

I really like the fire scorpion too. I just got the big one from set 71024 but while larger it isn't really more articulated than the little guy, so only has a tiny bit more play value for a much higher price.

I doubt I will be as diligent as Jim Matterer, who manages to post something new nearly every day.

It is less diligence & more of a way to keep busy & entertain myself without TV being involved. TV is the little mind killer.

Thanks for the review; I had missed getting this one when it first came out, but I've just found it on eBay from a US dealer. Well done.

71024 probably won't be available here; certainly not in stores as no new Novelmore (except for the Fi?ures set) is being sent out to them. Perhaps the website will eventually get the new sets but I'm not counting on it. 71024 is on eBay.... maybe this weekend when my PM budget is back in action....

Next is Riverdale Station, 4301.
I wanted this beautiful set for a long time, but had almost given up hope of getting hold of it when one came up on eBay for a not-too-unreasonable price and I went for it. Its got RED STECK! And Red toasts!
(https://i.postimg.cc/fRkHDk69/IMG-8219.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/7ZpN493F/IMG-8236.jpg)

The secondhand set I bought was almost complete. As usual with sets of this vintage (1987), the building instructions do not show all the set contents.
Trying to find out what the set originally contained was a bit of a challenge, especially what the figures are wearing. I eventually decided that the girl with the yellow dress is wearing a red bow round her neck, the same as the bow worn by the boy clown in set 4787 Musical Clowns (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4787).

Eventually, I amassed all the parts of the set, apart from one sticker. I appealed on here (https://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=17870.msg322980#msg322980) and, amazingly, Indianna was able to send me a scan of the original stickers!

So here are pictures of the set…

Your own Riverdale station, how very exciting  :yippee:
It's one of the few sets on my list of must-but-don't-haves.

I’ve also been watching out for a more complete train station but most on EBay go for very high prices. I’ve seen complete ones at $300

Your look very clean and complete , great find and addition to your collection

In my opinion this is a great example of how playmobil was once a great German design. It has childish colors but yet is appealing to adult collectors. The use of stecks system that kept production prices down. Stecks allowed for multiple sets to be combined if you chose, making builders want more of the same set. It fit with so many other stecks sets that you could combine other buildings or safari foundations  together. Simple yet very effective, thought out engineering but effective .

One of these days I think it would be prudent to get a Chinese manufacturer to mass produce the golden year parts and give Geobra the bird

Loving that Riverdale Station set, so quaint and beautiful!

Did you manage to recreate the stickers from a picture? Would be curious to hear more about that!

Did you manage to recreate the stickers from a picture?

No, I used the scan of original stickers sent to me by Indianna to print off new stickers on self-adhesive printer paper. As far as I can see, these are as good as original stickers.

Stickers do tend to deteriorate over time, so I often have to resort to remaking them, sometimes by using images found online, sometimes scanning existing stickers, sometimes recreating them in software.

Here, for example is a scan of a pirate flag done on a scanner/copier:

And here are the flags for the Houseboat 3540 I created in Word.

Are they vinyl or paper decals

That’s one unfortunate thing about buying  used Playmobil that was not properly stored in a climate controlled vacuumed chamber, those darn decals

Thanks Graham. But how to manage getting the right scale / size?

And yes, also more details on the paper quality used would be interesting. I'd love to renew some of the stickers on my older 80's sets.

Also, how to source the original sticker set?

And yes, also more details on the paper quality used would be interesting. I'd love to renew some of the stickers on my older 80's sets.

I use self-adhesive photo paper in an ink jet printer. Glossy, matt and transparent versions are available, depending on the sticker you are replacing. I have not tried vinyl.

But how to manage getting the right scale / size?

Trial and error to some extent. When photocopying (scan/print) existing stickers onto self-adhesive paper, they come out the same size as the originals, pretty much.

Also, how to source the original sticker set?
That's the big question!
1. Buy on eBay (older sets often had assembly instructions printed on the back of the sticker sheet)
2. Search pictures on PlaymoDB, sometimes there are high resolution images of sticker sheets (not often for older sets)
3. Look on Datenbank-Setinhalt at klickywelt.de, sometimes there are images of sticker sheets (pre-1990 sets)
4. Ask on here if anyone has the original sticker sheets, or a scan
5. Buy new stickers from PM as spare parts for recent sets. Sometimes these are the same size and shape as the stickers on older sets - e.g. signs for old buildings
6. Recreate the designs using software and print out

Great pictures of your collection, GrahamB!

That fire scorpion is nice. It'd be great if some of the parts from those sets would be released again in other sets (including in different colours). They would work nicely in many fantasy settings (and it doesn't seem like the Dino Rise theme has done very well :-\).

6480 Black and Red Sea Serpent
It took me a long time to find this lovely beast for sale. Not surprising it’s hard to find, as it was only available direct from Playmobil between mid 2016 to mid 2017. It appears in the German and UK 2016-17 DS catalogues for this period (it’s probably in the catalogues for other countries too) for 24,99 Euro (20 GBP), but it’s not in the subsequent catalogues.
It is made from the same moulds as the green and yellow Sea Serpent found in  sets 4805 (2008) and 70467 (2020) (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/your_set_list.pl?setlist=4805,70467).

It came with a counterweight so it floats steadily. An underwater motor can be fitted to the counterweight.

Ambulance Station 3432

Now its white Steck and white toasts!

This set maybe gets its name from the three ‘Ambulance Station’ signs on its walls. In my part of the world, an Ambulance Station is a place where ambulances go when they are not out and about, attending medical emergencies or queueing to deliver patients to overcrowded hospitals. This set is really a hospital and there is not an ambulance to be seen!
Anyway, it seems to be much sought-after and it has some nice parts, at least 8 of which are unique to this set (white Steck wall parts, grey door and window parts).

Some of the white building elements can also be found in the vacation cottage 3771, and the floor parts are also in the Riverdale Station set (see above). These floor parts can be used to provide floors for the Steck buildings in the theme ‘Old Houses’ (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/sets.pl?theme=Old+Houses&sortby=theme&focus=all&pics=on) (see here (https://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=17462.msg315381#msg315381)), but were never included in those sets. 18 white toasts fill the gaps at the tops of the walls not occupied by signs.

There is a partition dividing the building into two unequal-sized rooms. There are five windows and two side doors in grey with grey frames and horizontal slats.

One end wall has two large white doors and internal shelving.

The base consists of 12 pieces:

The roof has 9 parts. There are two large red cross symbols on stickers on the roof.

There are six signs for the outside of the building, each with stickers;
•   three long ‘Ambulance-Station’ signs,
•   a sticking-out wall sign with (on both sides) a red cross and the word ‘Unfallhilfe’ (Accident Assistance),
•   a sticking-out wall sign with (on both sides) a clearway symbol and the words ‘Ambulance. Zufahrt Tag u. Nacht freihalten’ (Keep access clear day and night)
•   a flat-to-wall sign with the wording ‘Besuchszieten Mo-Do 1600-1800 Sonntags 1400-1600’ (Visiting hours Mon-Thurs 1600-1800 Sundays 1400-1600)
There are also stickers on the two charts attached to the hospital beds and circular red cross stickers for the roof (two, large), suitcase (two, quite small), cap and cuff badges (7, small).

Inside the hospital are two beds with medical charts and an operating table with light. The two orange wheelchairs are a departure from the commoner white one and the orange stretcher is rarer than the usual grey ones.

There are 5 red cups and a red jug, but no table to put them on!

It's a great set. I have the structure but it didn't have the klickies or accessories with it. They need to release a Steck system Safari Animal Hospital set using the end wall with the double doors mold and some of the other interesting parts, plus the freight station understructure. Link it to Wiltopia maybe.

Circus truck 3129

PlaymoDB calls this set “Circus Truck And Lion Trailer,” stating it was first released in 1980, has 2 figures, but no parts are inventoried and there is no set picture. Of the 76 Circus sets listed in PlaymoDB, only three have no picture.

Collector describes it as an Exclusive set, issued in 1980 and rates it as ‘absolutely rare.’ Collector does have a picture of the set box, which I used to identify the set contents.

I bought this from a German seller. Its in lovely condition. I had to find the grey ramp and steps for the lions’ trailer, the two lions, the two keepers and their red accessories, a green push-broom and handbrush and a red bucket. Luckily I had most of these, even the bucket!

The truck is similar to the Police truck in set 3223 (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3233x), perhaps a brighter green colour and with different stickers.

The trailer is similar to set 3514 (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3514), though this one has a green truck with a red roof, rather than blue and red.

Two more circus sets. Again, neither has a picture in PlaymoDB.
3529 from 1986, a small set with 3 klickies and 18 accessories, many resembling those in set 3512 (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3512).
I based the set contents on a picture of the set box at klickypedia (https://www.klickypedia.com/sets/3923-ger-clown-and-acrobats/)
(Set 3529 possibly did not have a sticker on the seat of the chair).

The acrobats can perform various stunts using the blue parts and the chair:
(https://i.postimg.cc/4Ng9PfZQ/IMG-0006.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/DyPbY9wk/IMG-0007.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/cCQ8Wj73/IMG-0008.jpg)

And set 3194x, an Orange Circus from 1979, similar in many ways to the Circus Arena set 3553 (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3553) and the Circus Arena Blue set 3510 (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3510). 3194x is called ‘Red Circus’ in PlaymoDB, but has no picture nor details of contents. It has 105 pieces, not including 27 stickers.

There is a bandstand with bell (I forgot to add a string to pull to ring the bell);

The band have green suits with yellow trim. Their instruments include a trumpet, bass drum with cymbals (badum-tish), a string bass and a violin. Their desks are yellow. There is a baton for the conductor.

The billboard shows the acts included in the circus:
5 Klickanis, Los Mexicos, Fraulein Amanda, Peppino & Co., Red Devils.

The ring can be set up with fences, lions (3 males) and a trainer,

Another act has four black horses with red plumes,
(https://i.postimg.cc/Wpkb1zt6/IMG-9738.jpg)

The orange set is really rare I think. It looks great, and yours is in beautiful condition. The old acrobat acts are great, and I think that may be the only circus horse act with black horses, they are usually white. Thanks for sharing these great photos

It's a while since I posted any additions to this topic, but I have several more lovely sets to share, starting with

Aristocrats set 3543

This is another sought-after set from Playmobil’s days of fixed-wrist klickies. Issued first in 1978, it contains several parts not found in any other set.

PlaymoDB has the set in the ‘Multiklicky’ theme. It has five klickies, three adult females and two adult males.

(https://i.postimg.cc/jjTMh7N4/IMG-0803.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/gkfSn525/IMG-0801.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/bvqRnjc6/IMG-0804.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/J4yY7mMZ/IMG-0800.jpg) (https://i.postimg.cc/zfpFSPqq/IMG-0805.jpg)

What makes them aristocrats? Probably the fact that they have fine clothes (cloaks, bonnets, hats), fans and walking canes and more luggage than any mere commoner would carry, including two hatboxes and two travel baskets. The hatboxes hold an extra top hat and an extra wide-brimmed lady's hat.

One of the figures, a woman dressed in black and white with a white ‘mob cap’ is probably a lady’s maid. Here she is practising bowing to her betters.

The ‘special’ parts in this set include the mob cap (not in any other set), the blue ‘stovepipe’ hat (not in any other set), a green ‘poke bonnet’ (white and yellow versions exist in other sets), two blue ‘boot cuffs’, the stickers on the luggage and two pointed cuffs in white.

One of the male figures has a twisty walking cane. This came on a sprue with a straight white cane, a furled umbrella in white and two white fans, found only in this set and the Color set 3637 (Travellers with pig). The white furled umbrella is now commonplace thanks to its inclusion in the give-away set 9855 for several years. The twisty cane is, however, quite a rarity. The light brown dog is only found in this set and one other.

One of the male figures has a twisty walking cane. This came on a sprue with a straight white cane, a furled umbrella in white and two white fans, found only in this set and the Color set 3637 (Travellers with pig).er.

"Travellers with pig" - that is amazing.  I have been setting up a railway scene supposedly in France and thought of having a baggage car with a sign on saying "Baggage only, no farm animals".

The green bonnet is a fine piece. One of the ones that made playmobil stand out in its early days.

Heather calls set 3637 "Family With Suitcases and Pig??" in PlaymoDB. But there is definitely a pig there! The family must have taken the pig in Third Class with them if it wasn't allowed in the baggage car!

Maybe a salute to the Citroen 2CV the spec of which I think referred to eggs, the farmer's wife and a pig.

Safari

There were fifteen (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/your_set_list.pl?setlist=3413,3414,3528,3670x,3529,3189,3676,3532,3679,3433,7400,7305,3364,7062,7315;title=Safari%20sets%201980-1987) early sets in this theme, issued between 1980 and 1987 (that includes four ‘Direct Service’ sets and five ‘Color’ sets). I haven’t included the ‘bedouin’ or ‘arabian’ sets 3415, 3585 and 3586. I tend towards the Wikipedia definition here;

“A safari (/səˈfɑːri/; from Swahili safari 'journey' originally from Arabic Safar 'to journey') is an overland journey to observe wild animals, especially in East Africa.”

The stickers that come with the sets refer to Expedition Ngorongoro. The Ngorongoro crater is a real place in Tanzania, next door to the Serengeti.

I set up a diorama with most of the sets, apart from the Color Safari Jeep and Biplane;

The backdrop is a picture of the Ngorongoro crater.

I made this picture with the help of Photoshop® a while ago. Looking at it now though, I am not too happy with it. The foreground perspective doesn’t match the background and some of the foreground still needs ‘editing out,’ especially under the trees on the right. I am tending towards thinking that photographic backgrounds are too ‘real’ for the abstract level of Playmobil models (which are less ‘real’). The foreground is a uniform green sheet of fabric with orange sand sprinkled on in places, which seems more appropriate than the photographic background.

Here are some pictures without the photographic background, for those of us who like to see ‘making of’ pictures!

Those are great and the shot with the photographed backdrop gives a good sense of open terrain. The main issue for me is that the real ground doesn't match the colour of the photo. It probably would have been better to have an entirely sand ground with some clumps of green.

Really great sets you have there. I think these qualify as part of playmobil’s golden years. Those safari building are quite sought after for so many collectors

Those are some more great sets and pictures, GrahamB!

I really like the twisted cane in Set 3543. That would make an excellent wand for a magic user. :)

3660x Kaufmannszug

This is a famous set, much desired by many collectors (judging by the eBay prices for some of its component parts!). Its from the Color* range, most of the parts being pure white.

* If you don’t know about Color sets (the modern ones are a rather pale imitation of the classic Color sets of the 1980s), most of the parts were made from white plastic and the owner had to colour the parts themselves, using felt-tipped pens supplied or available separately. This was to encourage creativity, but people who owned such sets comment that the results were frustratingly poor and not a patch on the results shown on the box art!

What is a Kaufmannszug?

‘Kaufmannszug’ translates as ‘Merchants’ train’ or ‘Merchants’ procession’ or possibly ‘Merchants’ convoy.’

In the Middle Ages, groups of merchants with their horse-drawn wagons travelled across Germany. This was dangerous, as the rich merchants were an attractive target for highwaymen and ‘robber barons.’ A letter (perhaps in the form of a scroll) would be presented by the merchants to local leaders as proof of entitlement to an armed escort, which was then provided for a fee. The merchants may also have employed soldiers themselves to provide protection. It is not clear how often such journeys took place; for example Frankfurt held fairs twice a year and merchant trains travelled there from both Nuernberg and Ausberg. But the custom seems to have extended from about 1200 to 1803.

Nuernberg (the home of Playmobil) was an important starting point for such merchant trains.  In 1910, a mural by Georg Kellner was erected on the facade of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Nuernberg, depicting a 16th century merchant train.

Nuremberg was a major centre of manufacture during the middle ages. There was a saying "Nürnberger tand geht in alle land".  Nuremberg merchandise goes to all lands.
There's a mural painted (originally?) in 1910 with this phrase on the commerce building in Nuremberg.

Some people believe this mural was the inspiration for set 3660x.

In modern day Germany, groups of enthusiasts reenact these processions. See here (https://kaufmannszug.com/)

Building up the set

The central part of this set is the wagon and horses which I bought on eBay in the UK a couple of years ago. I only paid £10! Here is what I bought, before cleaning and removal of ink:

Some problems I encountered when trying to complete this set included

1.   It’s hard to decide exactly what the set contains.

a.   There seems to be just one version of the main box picture (above), which is perhaps the most authoritative source for the set contents (apart from opening an MISB set). The frying pan clipped to the side of the wagon gives a clue that other items on the sprue from which it came were also included (the sprue in question has 11 parts: frying pan, deep pot, shallower pot, 4 plates, jug, spatula, spoon and knife). Other parts which are sometimes included but are not visible on the box picture include a white wooden bucket with black handle, a white “Jug (straight), ladle, 5 mugs” [on sprue], 2 candlesticks (white or chrome) and a pair of white slippers.

b.   I found three pictures showing the set still in the original box, covered in transparent plastic, but these pictures are of limited use as the plastic is crinkled and so the contents are hard to make out.

c.   A couple of pictures I found online of the set contents laid out were not totally consistent with the box picture, or with one another. Likewise Mundobil’s inventory is incomplete and has discrepancies with the box picture. PlaymoDB has only 5 parts listed.

d.   Pictures showing the contents set up as a diorama are also of limited use and there is no guarantee they show the original contents. Here is an ‘official’ picture from Playmobil.de Archiv, It is not very easy to see much detail on this image, but it does show the wooden bucket with handle, not shown on the box picture:

e.   There is often inconsistency between what different collectors believe the set contains. I have illustrated below what I believe was included in the set. Only the documented opening of an MISB set would give some certainty about the contents and few if any owners of a set as rare as this still sealed in its original packaging would be willing to open it up.

2.   Different copies of the set certainly had different contents. Some sets had chrome parts such as weapons, in others they may have been white (although it may only be in the box picture that they are white). The canopy of the wagon was light brown in some sets, white in others.

3.   Some of the parts are extremely hard to get hold of (i.e. expensive), especially the white ‘Scholar’s’ hats as they were only ever produced for this set and one other. Playmoebius (https://www.playmoebius.com/en/16-marketplace) has 3D printed versions of this hat for sale. I got four of these hats from there. They needed spraying white.

For my pictures of this set, I made the decision to replace parts I don’t have with similar non-white parts and spray them white.
Here are the parts I sprayed white (all these except the hat on the extreme right are spray-painted).

Top left: 4 Boot cuffs (original yellow); Bottom left: Hat, high dome, erect brim, 1 hole (original red), Bottom, 2nd from left; Fur collar (original brown)
On the right: six Hats, scholar's, round, flat, central button; 1 painted white (original black), 4 in the centre are from Playmoebius painted white (originals off-white), 1 on the extreme right white, unpainted.

Here are all the parts in the set, laid out. This is my best guess at what the original set contained. I have included (at the bottom left) the ‘Jug (straight), ladle, 5 mugs’ but I have no evidence these were actually included.

Here is a link to an Excel spreadsheet showing the inventory for this set: 3660x (https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/iqgawli10z72xe9d7ki2w/3660x-inventory.xlsx?rlkey=6lx9wkzy2p4zl73elkjj8bplc&dl=0)

Parts which may be different in different versions of the set

The “flag with clips, elongated point at top,” of which there are two, either has 2 holes, or (possibly in later versions) no holes.
Several parts may be either white or chrome. The halberds, swords and spears with barbed heads are shown as white on the box picture, but I have never seen one of these in white (either in a set or ‘loose’), so I believe they were chrome. Conversely the flagpoles are always white in sets I have seen, but chrome ones (which are found in several other sets) may have been used in some versions of 3660.
The wagon canvas cover can be white or light brown (a light brown example is shown on Klickypedia).

Parts sometimes omitted from set contents

‘Jacket fronts.’ (2 shown on box picture- figures 1 and 3)

Parts not visible on the box picture

•   0 or 2 candlesticks, white or chrome? (White ones shown on some laid-out sets- not visible on box)
•   0 or 2 white slippers (None visible on the box, maybe the nobleman (figure 4) has 2 to wear when he dismounts from his horse?)
•   0 or 1 set of Jug (straight), ladle, 5 mugs [on sprue] (appears on some photos of set contents, I included)
•   3 or 5 swords. (figures 7 and 9 have a halberd in their right hands but their left hands are not visible, so perhaps they have swords like figures 8, 10 and 12)
•   1 or 2 lanterns (the figures by the wagon on the box picture both have ‘boot cuffs,’ similar hats and white shirt fronts, so I believe they are both lantern-bearers, although only one lantern is clearly visible on the box.

Parts where quantities differ in some sources

boot cuffs. (4 shown on box picture- figures 1 and 3)
1 or 2 drumsticks (The drummer has only one free hand, but 2 could have been included, two possibly visible in set contents at klickypedia)
2 rectangular baskets (see image of set contents at Klickywelt)
2 boxes with lids (see image of set contents at Klickywelt)
