Is anyone else having issues with PlaymoDB?
When searching I just get the following message:
"Sorry, PlaymoDB is undergoing technical difficulities. Please try again in a few hours."
-
Same for me.

Hi folks!
Klickywelt reports PlaymoDB beeing down since Friday. You wouldn't have any intelligence about that, would you?
In der KW wird drüber gesprochen, daß die PlaymoDB seit Freitag nicht mehr geht. Weiß zufällig wer warum?

Hello Friends
does anyone know something about playmodb.org ??
Or what's going on with heather, is she not feeling well or does she need help.
???
hope she is well.
Greetings
Andi

Today is at least the third day for Playmodb to be down :'(
-
Noticed that too..
Did someone contact Heather?
I thought she was in an "off" playmomode - we all go through those, unfortunately, since the site isn't updated in a long time...
-
(maybe a mod can merge these?)
-
It's been down since last Thursday. I feel sure Heather will be aware of the problem and hopefully will resolve it shortly.
-
:hissyfit: HELP cannot live without that page :help:
-
Someone said on THAT site that Heather said (uhm) that the servers are being updated, and they don't know when it will be back online.

It works, but only in a limited way. This link brings up all the archive available on playmodb:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/*
but even then doesn't show everything:

After putting in a search term on the Playmodb home page, received this error message:
Can't locate pm_subs_testnoglob.pl in @INC (@INC contains: /home/cplaymod/perl5/lib/perl5 /home/cplaymod/perl5/lib/perl5/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /home/cplaymod/perl/usr/local/lib64/perl5 /home/cplaymod/perl/usr/local/share/perl5 /home/cplaymod/perl/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl /home/cplaymod/perl/usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl /home/cplaymod/perl/usr/lib64/perl5 /home/cplaymod/perl/usr/share/perl5 /usr/local/lib64/perl5 /usr/local/share/perl5 /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib64/perl5 /usr/share/perl5) at /home/cplaymod/public_html/cgi-bin/showinv.pl line 11.
For help, please send mail to the webmaster (webmaster@playmodb.org), giving this error message and the time and date of the error.
As suggested in the message, I sent a message to the webmaster but I have little hope of a reply. After several unanswered emails sent over the last few years to Heather via admin@playmodb.org, I am rather pessimistic about the future of Playmodb. :( and >:(
-
I sent her account a message here, but no idea if she'll respond. I use that site CONSTANTLY, so I'm terrified if something's going to happen to it--in a negative way. :'( I thought it was my end and now wish it was. I remember a while back asking about the site's security for the future. I hope there's a way to genuinely archive the ENTIRE site, I tried to look it up myself. Any tech-savvy people, PLEASE let us know!

You can't really archive the site like you could a "static site"... The pages are generated from the database....
-
Would be a tragedy but tragically fitting if playmodb and playmobil both shuffled off this mortal coil together.... :sorrow:

I think you can. Some places at least are able to save an entire site, it’s just really expensive to do so. But you bring a point about generation…

PLEASE don’t jinx us. :'(

Maybe it is the changes to Playmobil's website that have brought this about.

Maybe it is the changes to Playmobil's website that have brought this about.
That shouldn’t have anything to do with it, because the site loops to itself, doesn’t it? All the info was added manually, wasn’t it?

As far as I know, most of the data on Playmodb was scraped from the Playmobil website via some electronic means which I don't fully understand and put into the Playmodb database. A good deal was also done manually or via files sent over by others who had done the manual input.
I'm totally speculating here, but given that Playmodb hasn't been updated for a long time and that Heather has been unreachable, at least for me, I wonder if Geobra management are involved somehow.

Aw NUTS. That place was so helpful. :( I used it for references all the time. I s there no one else who was co-running it?

No, just Heather.

I think everyone should read this, posted by Heather in 2013, near the start of a 17 month period during which PlaymoDB functioned poorly or not at all. Give her some space and time to come up with a solution!

Considering Heather's age and apparent retirement, she may be at a point where she simply wants to move on. Crowdfunding to solve any operational upgrade expenses is fine, but I have a suspicion what she may really need is a successor.
Honestly, why this site exists separately from hers is a mystery to me. They would make a good marriage, and give the community better weight with corporate PM.
-
:yippee: PlaymoDB is back :woohoo: :thanks:
-
Were you able to search for anything, pingo? I am still getting the same lengthy error message that I got a couple of days ago. :(

100% agreement there! I always wondered whether Playmodb could be transformed into some sort of wiki where trusted contributors could update the site.

That would seem to make sense, but perhaps the cost and effort of hosting and moderating a combined site would be a challenge. Playmodb actually predates Playmofriends by about a year, I think, and those of us who've been around that long remember that Playmofriends was created because another fan site, Playmoboard, spiraled downward and eventually collapsed completely.
There have been many ups and downs over the years within the playmobil community, even some here in this very friendly space, so I understand why Heather might want to have complete control over Playmodb, especially at the beginning. Some folks have supplied Playmodb with photos and information and some monetary contributions over the years and Heather has always been scrupulous in giving credit to the source of the data shared on Playmodb. But maintaining Playmodb must be a huge responsibility and I hope something can be done to preserve it for the future.

There is a Wiki type Playmobil site:
https://playmobil.fandom.com/wiki/Playmobil

I hope she is open to financial contributions. Perhaps it is time to fully fund a professional rebuild for her site (one better suited for mobile) and permanent professional hosting, which would allow her to only be responsible for new data uploads.

WHAT A RELIEF! :yippee: :woohoo: :confetti: :cheerlead:

There was a similar discussion some years back when PlaymoDB was also falling behind on set updates etc but Heather politely declined any help offered. In Klickypedia, everyone can contribute and update sets, and so far it is working nicely. If more people could help in data entry in PlaymoDB I believe the site could have been easier to maintain.
One of the most valuable usage of PlaymoDB (at least for me) was/is to find out which (spare) parts of older sets can be found in the sets that are on sale, or can be available in the market. As time passes by and latest sets found in PlaymoDB become obsolete, then this search feature losses its value and to an extend so does PlaymoDB (which is sad).

Fantastic news - I just tried it myself and am so relieved! ;D
-
As I was lamenting on PlaymoDB not being updated etc. it was pointed out in that site (!) that not only PlaymoDB is again up but it also includes a lot of the recent sets as well !!!! even those that will be released later this year....
If Heather is reading this, it is the most welcomed surprise
Thank you so much!
-
Some folks have supplied Playmodb with photos and information and some monetary contributions over the years
I am very proud to have been asked by Heather to scan in building instructions for a set - it's probably my greatest contribution to PMdom ;D 8-) :clover:

Great news!
Thank you Heather!

 Yes everything works now... it also runs faster now
That's great news, especially and a test on the 3880 fire engine which came out in the mid-1990s still brings up the instructions from the link to the Playmobil database.

Heather is the best 8-)

*wrong thread, I apologize*

Are there any updates on PlaymoDB? There was a spark of activities last Feb where several new sets were added but not much since then. I wonder if Heather is active (?) Hope she is doing fine...
