After a ship, the next thing any self-respecting pirate gang needs is a hideout to store their loot. This treasure chest gives your pirates that and more.
Retailing in the UK for £20 (unless you go to Hamley's to get skinned for £25, ahem) , the chest itself is a nice storage box for a child's Playmobil pirates. Just tumble everything in at play's end, and they're all safe from the vacuum cleaner and the cat until next time.
Open up the chest (this is a little tricky, the spring catches are quite strong) and with very little setting up you have a rocky pirate haven with two palm trees and a quay, ready for your schooner or galleon to moor up to.
Both sides of the chest can open up, so it can be a cave or an island with two open beaches, and with typical Playmobil thoroughness, the backdrop can be reversed depending on the role it is to play. It's only shiny cardboard, however, so needs to be done carefully to avoid damage.
The dastardly pirates have set a trap for their enemies however - the boards at the top of the quay will drop the unwary caller down into a pit - with scorpions and a snake for added zest, and if that's not enough, there's a crab to nip his toes, a parrot to generally annoy him, and a monkey to drop bananas down on him.
Three figures are included which I've not seen in other sets; a Chief with his long red beard, his one-eyed first mate in red hat & coat, and a crewman in a bandanna. They're all armed to the teeth with cutlasses and firearms.
There are plenty of rocks to hide behind, a campfire, a barrel with tabletop to plan the next raid, and the Big Bertha gun to fire at attacking ships.
My only complaint is a logical one that won't bother most children - the Big Bertha wouldn't have the range or accuracy of the smaller bore cannons, so if I were the Royal Navy coming to storm the hideout, I'd lay off outside Bertha range and just pound the hideout to dust.
I think this is overall an excellent value for money set, with lots of play scenario possibilities to set a child's imagination going, and one which I think every Playmobil Pirates collector would want.

Thanks for the review. It looks like a great set (if you're into Pirates ;D)

Excellent review, Martin, and thanks for producing it. You have a real flair for this.
A pirate captain with the red beard has appeared in sets 3860 and 3029 with different coloured arms, maybe this ones' twin brother.
-
Yes, it's nice to see some close-ups of how all that fits in a small box! I'm going to borrow your box-back (bottom, I guess really) for the database, Martin, if you don't mind.
The red-bearded pirate is the same number as the one in the two versions of the Black Corsair:
30 00 7190 - Full red bearded pirate figure (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-00-7190)
Gord, if the pirate in your Black Corsair does have different arms, could I see a photo so I can document it?
By the way, the blue-vested pirate also appears in 3127 - Pirate Starter Set (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3127), and the red-coat is unique.
Cheers, Heather

My pleasure Heather, and it is actually the back of the box.

My error, Heather. I thought the arms on the figure in the treasure chest were cream rather than yellow.

Thanks, Martin. Back, yes, I was thinking about both sides opening - never mind. I'd love to have nice clear photos of these guys without their accessories, if you could manage it. Re: yellow arms: That's OK, playmofire, just checking... Playmobil has been known to make such spanner-throwing colour changes! I think yellow suits his outfit better anyway.

Will do. I've actually changed the Red Pirate's trousers (to red) as a custom figure - hence his hiding in the snake pit, but I can easily change them back for a photo.

Here you go Heather, hope these pics fit the bill! If you'd prefer an email attachment or whatever, just let me know the best way.

Grand, thanks so much! A post is fine as long as I know to look for them. Is there anything special about the figures' backs that don't appear in the photo?
-
No, nothing interesting on their backs.
I forgot to put the numbers:
Red jacket: 30 00 1362, he wears hat 30 07 3430, scarf 30 09 5640 and 2x cuffs 30 09 5730

redbeard: 30 00 7190, hat 30 06 3930, 2x cuffs 30 06 4980, cloak 30 08 3830 plume 30 07 3120

Thanks, Martin ...
Most Playmobil collectors probably know that the 5700 series has been pretty much an exclusive for North America. And, since some of us (particularly me) seem to be a bit lazy, I (for one) really appreciate your taking the time to review the North American exclusive sets ... :)
I guess that those of us on this side of the pond should really feel somewhat ashamed that we haven't reviewed the North American sets for our fellow collectors "over there" (reminds me of a song) ... ;)
However, you, Andi and a few others are doing such an excellent job of it, that it would be inconsiderate, rude and perhaps even thoughtless for any of us North Americans to interfere ...
Please keep up the good work! Again, speaking only for myself, "I love it!"
All the best,
Richard
