Sashimono were (small banners worn by samurai soldiers in feudal Japan, for identification during battles)
were attached to the backs of the chest armor were most prominent during the Sengoku period (a long period of civil war from the middle 15th to early 17th century.)

Excellent customs again, cheng, but it must have been quite awkward fighting with a flagpole on our back.

the samurai with the biggest (not golf :P ) handicap probably carried the largest banner and rode the fastest horse

I've always liked the way those back-flags look. Very dramatic. Time to watch some Kurosawa again!

“It is said that what is called 'the spirit of an age' is something to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world's coming to an end. For this reason, although one would like to change today's world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation.”
― Yamamoto Tsunetomo, 1716 A.D.
