I decided to make a shop. I planned it out. It would need to be such-and-such size, and shaped just-so. I would use these windows; and I would need those shelves. The cashier would be situated here, and here would be the main shop display. A perfect shop.
Then I wondered who ever had a perfect shop. I supposed that those individuals or high street chains that were rich enough to build their own shop, or to totally remodel and refit an existing building, they would have a perfect shop. But everyone else had to make do with the size and structure of the building they bought or rented. Especially if they rented the building. What if one had to try and fit one's shop layout into a rented building?
I changed my mind about creating a perfect shop. Instead I built a shop building to rent.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/BG00_zpstx6gfcow.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/BG00_zpstx6gfcow.jpg.html)
I put blue posts on the middle floor to make it less attractive, and to mess up any colour schemes. I also made a couple of rules about what could and couldn't be changed in the shop.
It would be a challenge. Would I be able to make a variety of shops within this building?
The shop would be rented out to eight different types of traders, and become:
- a Fashion Boutique
- a DIY Store
- an Outdoor Shop
- a Toy Shop
- a Pet Shop
- a Flower Shop
- a Food Market
- and a Secondhand Shop.
Could I do it?
1. The Fashion Boutique
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS00_zpsj5iaoeoq.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS00_zpsj5iaoeoq.jpg.html)
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS01_zpsunjjpzxf.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS01_zpsunjjpzxf.jpg.html)
Out of all the shops, this one was the easiest one to create, because so many appropriate items had come with the Shopping Mall anyway.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS02_zpsovssptry.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS02_zpsovssptry.jpg.html)
Though if I hadn't created a bag-and-luggage floor, I don't think I would have had enough to fill the entire shop.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS03_zps3kndzcuf.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS03_zps3kndzcuf.jpg.html)
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS04_zpsetd1hmwg.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS04_zpsetd1hmwg.jpg.html)
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS05_zpsq8cexiez.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS05_zpsq8cexiez.jpg.html)
I also needed to add a Perfume section, because I had nothing else to go here.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS06_zpsehzxjcq3.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS06_zpsehzxjcq3.jpg.html)
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS07_zpskj6viqjm.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS07_zpskj6viqjm.jpg.html)
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS08_zpsmoyiad4f.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS08_zpsmoyiad4f.jpg.html)
I didn't have enough smart hats, either, so I filled in the spaces with decorative items.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/CS09_zpsxoaqfrid.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/CS09_zpsxoaqfrid.jpg.html)
All-in-all, the Fashion Boutique was OK, but it wasn't very satisfying to create. It felt too much like I was just opening the relevant storage containers and then plonking things down in the shop.
The DIY Store
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/DIY01_zpsi8acms0v.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/DIY01_zpsi8acms0v.jpg.html)

(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/DIY07_zpsvtylplkd.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/DIY07_zpsvtylplkd.jpg.html)
The paintpots are covered flowerpots!
Up until this point, I was quite enjoying myself making the DIY Store. But when I came to the top floor, the floor layout, and the 'wrong' shelves in the 'wrong' places seemed quite an obstacle.
I wasn't really happy with my tool display:
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/DIY08_zpsumedscl2.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/DIY08_zpsumedscl2.jpg.html)
And I think this looks a bit 'thrown together':
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/DIY09_zpsjbqdtb0m.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/DIY09_zpsjbqdtb0m.jpg.html)
But, of course, one can always cheer oneself up by buying a toolbox, a screwdriver, and - of course - a new bucket!!
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/DIY10_zpsz16jkgqb.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/DIY10_zpsz16jkgqb.jpg.html)
Continued tomorrow with the Outdoor Shop, and Toy Shop.
-
Can I just say... I'm SO happy you're back :*) ;D :*)
The building with the big windows might be more appropriate for a boutique, but I think the higglety-pigglety look of the DIY store is spot-on and it clashes with the building in a good way.
You're not happy with the tool display? I think it's ingenius :)
-
Love the details - especially those in the DIY Store .
Thanks for Sharing. I am very curious about the other stores.
-
Great work, Raven, especially the DIY store. As Birdie says, you've hit the target bang on with the higgledy-piggledy layout, and the tool display is just what I used to see on the DIY market stalls in the small city where we used to live.
I like the detail of the man sitting outside the changing rooms in the boutique - been there, done that!
-
These are great, and I really like the tool display in the curved space. It's a difficult area and you've done really well with it. I am looking forward to seeing your other shop solutions.
-
Wow, these are both great!!
Love the BBQs as holders for flip flops!
I thought the fans and bottles fit in very well with the hat display.
Your wall of paints looks wonderful!
-
Love these, especially the DIY store.
Can't wait to see what else you create.
-
Very well done! I really like the way you put the curved clothing rod into the curved window area in the clothing store. Looks very nice there.
-
The thing with the tool section is that tools tend to be on shelves or racks. Even screwdrivers come in sleeves or some sort of hook on them to hang from a rack/peg. Tools in bins tends to be something you see in second hand shops. It's still a very good hardware shop and I like the safety section. Maybe include a couple of fire extinguishers if room allows.
In the picture with the dust sheets and rope, where does that nice yellow rope at the top come from?
-
^ The yellow rope isn't Playmobil; it turned up with a secondhand farm set. It's flat on the other side, with a purple lump where it has been broken off something, and klickies can't hold it - but it looks alright hung on a wall!
3. The Outdoor Shop
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/OD01_zps3zgxd47t.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/OD01_zps3zgxd47t.jpg.html)

I wanted to make my shops as realistic as possible, so naturally there are unicorns in the neighbourhood.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/OD03_zpssffkjjdb.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/OD03_zpssffkjjdb.jpg.html)

A problem with this building, I think, is that items tend to look a bit spread out.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/OD05_zpsgdcmakou.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/OD05_zpsgdcmakou.jpg.html)

Only the smallest of the tents would fit into the available space.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/OD07_zpstjaqfe7f.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/OD07_zpstjaqfe7f.jpg.html)

Nothing spectacular, but it was quite fun to do.
4. The Toy Shop

There's still the 'a bit too spread out' problem, of course.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/TY05_zpsyijrm8mi.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/TY05_zpsyijrm8mi.jpg.html)

I had to do a whole floor dedicated to Playmobil!

Continued tomorrow with the Pet Shop and Flower Shop.
-
Your toystore looks like paradise to me!
-
Really sweet & well-displayed. I recently bought the Hotel Gift Shop so I can emphasize with all the little items & their places on shelves.
-
Could I do it?
Of course!
The Fashion Boutique[/u]
(...)
Though if I hadn't created a bag-and-luggage floor, I don't think I would have had enough to fill the entire shop.
All those trolley bags there look awesome!
LOVED the guy waiting ;D He even looks bored (have no idea how that's possible!)

What are those brown wheelbarrow-like things?
Love the guy in the checked shirt and overalls behind the counter! (and the wallpaper too - you remember such great details!)
The paintpots are covered flowerpots!
Very creative! And looks great, with the samples and all :)
I wasn't really happy with my tool display:
I like it. So did my sister.
And I think this looks a bit 'thrown together':
I don't know about that... but it does look realistic, I think.
I'm loving this! You are great with system X. I hope to learn something... And you're making me want the mall too (my wallet is over there calling you names, btw :-[ )
-
3. The Outdoor Shop
Not very sure about the wiseness of having a bucket of knives right by the counter.... :P
I wanted to make my shops as realistic as possible, so naturally there are unicorns in the neighbourhood.
Naturally.
Love all the ice boxes. I wonder if we have the ones with the penguin and the polar bear
Also, creative use of the playmospace (half)"backpacks" :)
4. The Toy Shop
All the non-playmo toys are great. My sister recognized a couple of Barbie ones... What are the ones on the bottom shelf? They are sooooo cute!
I had to do a whole floor dedicated to Playmobil!
Obviously! ;D
Looking forward to more!
-
Great versions too. All the camp stoves an coolers together look great. This is a wonderful way to show off the accessories for various themes.
-
Great versions too. All the camp stoves an coolers together look great. This is a wonderful way to show off the accessories for various themes.
It is.
-
What are those brown wheelbarrow-like things?
They are carts to carry hay in. The large Horse Paddock set had one, and several other sets as well
-
Btw Raven, I LOVE it!

These ones?

I immediately realised a problem with making this flower shop - no, not having a Baby T-Rex in it (T-Rexs love flowers, so their presence in Flower Shops is not surprising) - but the size of the fixed shelves. You can see that it is a tight squeeze to put flowers on most of the shelves.
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/FS05_zpsgyoqogsu.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/FS05_zpsgyoqogsu.jpg.html)

Due to those shelf limitations, the Flower Shop was not quite the way I would have wanted it but, overall, it's quite pretty, I think.

Concluded tomorrow with the Food Market and Secondhand Shop.

Wow, they just get better and better.
The small tents in the outdoor shop are quite usual as they often have limited space, too. They may have a warehouse out of town where you can see more (or attend exhibitions of outdoor supplies or even hold their own) or, of course, have a website.
As for the problems with the shelving in the flower shop, it's something real flower shops have to deal with too. Your displays look just right and don't over fill the shop.
-
They are carts to carry hay in. The large Horse Paddock set had one, and several other sets as well
Ah, thank you. I have been mostly staying away from the riding sets.
The two in the middle are Sylvanian Families, and the ones at either end are Kinder Surprises.
Ah, yes, the sylvanian ones.. they are sooo cute!
5. The Pet Shop
Love the dog staring at the cat...
So the next floor became home to the Cosy Cat Café.
The cat sign on the counter is just purrfect!
And the top floor housed Horseriding Supplies.
I really like the way you displayed the saddles.
6. The Flower Shop
The flowery wagon wheels are amazing!
(T-Rexs love flowers, so their presence in Flower Shops is not surprising)
;D
Concluded tomorrow with the Food Market and Secondhand Shop.
Looking forward to it!

I am not able to say, which one I love best, they are all amazing!
And it makes me so happy, to see, you are back and feeling well again, dear!
Daniela
-
I agree that all of them have been amazing! And I see Toby and family are looking at horse riding supplies :D
-
I can't choose a favourite, they're all great!
-
I see Toby and family are looking at horse riding supplies
;D You noticed!
7. Sally's Food Market
As this is not really a Supermarket, it is called Sally's Food Market so that there is a reason for the staff to have the letter 'S' on their uniforms...
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i157/Raven461/FM01_zpsdtjreess.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/Raven461/media/FM01_zpsdtjreess.jpg.html)
Out of all the shops, this one was the most difficult to create, and took the longest time. My initial idea was to put all the tins and jars and packets on the entrance floor and then, on the higher floors, have the sellers of bread and cakes, meat, and fresh fruit and vegetables. But then when I came to do the higher floors, I realised that those fresh products really don't fit or display properly on the Shopping Mall's fixed shelves. So now what?
Tins and jars and packets would need to fill some shelves on the middle and top floor also. Which left my entrance floor shelves empty!
So the entrance floor ended up just with whatever was left over.

On the higher floors, there wasn't enough space for big displays of fresh food.

Despite the shelving limitations, the top floor came the closest to my liking.

Though these vegetables in crates on the shelves were very precariously balanced, and repeatedly fell off at about ten-second intervals.

I don't really recommend using the Shopping Mall as a Grocery Store!

This shop was fun to create, selecting various items to put on the shelves.

It was a nice and relaxing end to shop-making, especially after the struggles with the Food Market!

(Is there a smiley for 'gobsmacked'?)
I decided to wait until you had posted all the pictures before commenting, Raven. This is a wonderful concept, a great challenge to your own creativity with many many excellent ideas and heart-warming touches. My favourite shops were the flower shop and the secondhand shop, both of which really work well in that building! As Tahra said, the positioning of figures often gives a real sense of what they were thinking or saying, like the dog looking suspiciously at the green-eyed cat, the bored man outside the changing room, the guy pointing at the bread he wanted in the Sallymarket (I never know what the different loaves are called either!). Pure genius, AGAIN!
It has often struck me that the scale in the world of Playmobil is right off! You made all the shops work well, but the building really restricted what you could do, because it's actually far too small, the way it is designed! When my children have a PM school trip, they can only take 11 children and the teacher (plus driver) in the coach! I suppose klickies know no better and have adjusted to this in the same way as having no elbows or knees (NHL figures excepted!)
Veg racks falling off shelves; Blu-tack (or local equivalent) is a good solution, or don't you like using it?

|The food and second hand shop nicely round things off and, like the others, are great and you've overcome the problems of fixed shelves etc very well.

7. Sally's Food Market
As this is not really a Supermarket, it is called Sally's Food Market so that there is a reason for the staff to have the letter 'S' on their uniforms...
Brilliant!
And you have the blue bottles! MUST have some! I think they are the playmoclosest there is to water bottles.
Also.. that Kinder egg ;D
8. The Secondhand Shop
Love the kid pulling grandpa (?) along :)
And the Lego box! :o
The price tags are so..... on.
I look forward to your next project!

They were all wonderful. After seeing this I think I need maybe 8 more shopping mall sets...
Actually if you have the space the ground floor base plates will fit nicely next to each other so you can put more than one ground level across. It curves a bit due to the base plate shaping but can look nice. Takes more width of display table though. I have two mall sets so far and need one more to complete the building I want to eventually have. You've really provided some great ideas about what to do with it once created.
I really liked the cartons on their side in the boxes for case display in the store. That is a great idea and one I will definitely steal emulate one day. I especially like some of the things you've done in the flower shop. I will have to keep them in mind when I someday finally make my big garden center diorama.

I usually use Blu-tack/poster putty quite a lot, but in this case, I was stubborn: I was seeing the behaviour of the vegetables (jumping out of their crates and bringing the crates down with them) as a personal rebellion, and I was determined that I was going to win this argument about being on shelves, for at least the duration of a photograph.

Yes, a firm hand with vegetables is definitely the best course of action!

They're all wonderful in their own way
When I was a kid I always used to have an eye out for anything that was in Playmo-scale - it's not like I had a Playmo budget so I had to make due. I would have loved that Kinder-egg display or the little teddy bears and such. Actually a lot of what I used came out of Kinder Eggs.
