5596+5597 Figures 8
First, the mandatory note:
I've been told I am sometimes harsh on my comments. Keep in mind I LOVE playmobil. Generally, it's GREAT. Without a doubt and by FAR, the GREATEST toy on the Universe. And also keep in mind that I've gotten a box of each boys and girls since the first series - meaning, despite all the "problems" I point out, they are VERY MUCH WORTH IT. We ALL know playmobil rules, so I suppose I tend to point out the problems. There are only so many ways of saying AWESOME, right?
As usual, these were highly anticipated. This time, there WAS a serious reason for it - I was dying to see the speedo boots. They did not disappoint
The boxes are unfortunately like the last ones - simple and not that nice, with no image of the figures. That is lousy, especially because you can't really see the figures in the packs themselves either...
Sorry for the lousy box pics, but we couldn't wait, so..
And the packs:
My sister noted the lousy quality of the instructions as soon as she opened the first pack. It feels off, it smells off. A real shame to see our beloved playmobil's quality go downhill like this. Also, what was wrong with the numbers on those lists?
The packs were again neatly organized - which was good, cause I didn't have time to go through them the first night - we opened one of each "girls" before my class (the gladiator could NOT wait) and one of each "boys" when I got back. The rest the next day. All even again.
In all the packs we opened, there were these extras:
The butterfly and the feathers are very welcome, as is the hat thingie - and the neckpieces.. the grey hood most of all...
Great that there ended up being a couple of each wristthings, and a red neckpiece.. We need to sort the confederates (again). Bayonets are nice, since I think we are missing quite a few.
(more later.... )

Thank you so far, really waiting to see more. I tried to buy some this weekend, but the two big toyshops in town don't have them (yet?)...

Thank you so far, really waiting to see more. I tried to buy some this weekend, but the two big toyshops in town don't have them (yet?)...
Don't hold your breath.. :-[
Here I saw very few packs of series 6 (but I did grab me a couple of scots!) - I don't think I saw any series 7 :(
-
Really? We did get them till series 7 at least... I don't want them all. I really love to examine the bags before buying.
Great you found more scots!
-
I really like the Medieval knight in green armour as well as the Fisherman
-
I look forward to your individual reviews of the figures! :) I can't wait to get these, for the king and crusader and for those boots also!
-
We both love the lion king (though not as a knight!) and the fisherman (but that one not in numbers)..
I like the cruzader a lot (except the torso) - and of course I LOVE the speedo boots.
-
I like the lion knight, the viking, the wizard and the pirate.
While the pirate is quite generic, I really like more modest pirates like that who for once does not have a long coat. Could maybe use a less fancy hat but otherwise he looks great to use as civilian or sailor and the head is easy to change with figures.
Viking could maybe use a different torso, but I still like to expand my vikings a bit, I dont have many.
Wizard is nice, might change him a bit though to have long sleeves.
That lion knight is definatly the most beautifull figure of the batch though! I'll work him into my lion faction as a vassal or such most likely.
-
I like the lion knight, the viking, the wizard and the pirate.
Ah, yes! I nearly forgot about the wizard. I'm glad that that staff is back out is a nice colour.
-
Do you have pictures of them all? I'd love to see more detailed pictures. :)

Yes, sorry for the delay... With the cat situation, I couldn't last weekend.. I just took pics of the parts, hope to post the review today.. But no promises...

5596 Boys
1. Cruzader
(http://www.playkingdoms.com/temp/playmoproc/s8-boys01-a.jpg)
Not really fond of cruzaders (no surprise there), but he has gorgeous parts. And the torso is different from the previous ones.
The legs are particularly interesting. That sort of neckpiece is always welcome. And I had not noticed the arms, untill I actually had him in hand.. very very nice.
Considering the parts, we're keeping all of them... Though.. me thinks we will only keep one torso, and probably only one shield too.
2. Confederate Soldier
A different uniform than everyone else.. He his pretty though.
I like the new rifle (if we had it, I can't remember :-[ ). Though the bayonet doesn't really fit as it should because of the sight.
The red makes him fit for the artillery, I think. I'm not very fond of the blue pants, I prefer them all in grey... But I think the special had blue pants as well..
Problem is, we have an artillery crew already. GAH. Another group where we need to see what we have - though I sorted the older confederates, didn't touch the specials yet.
In this case, he might have TOO many accessories... If you want to shoulder the rifle, you need the bayonet off. But he has a saber too. So.. where to put it? Ah, but this is sooooo easily solved :D
3. Fisherman
Lovely. The colors help, I suppose. The printing is lousy. Unfortunately, not a problem with this one alone. And the torso had a blueish smudge that I think was from the instructions paper.
This is not one to have several of... the parts are kinda specific.
I think he is a beautiful klicky though, and we will make an effort to fit him on the Susanne. In his case, I even like the stubble.
-
4. Cop
No big deal - a cop. And THAT hair.
Not sure the torso printing was used before. I haven't been paying close attention to the rescue klickys. And we would need to pop them to see - I think previous versions had a larger printing for what can be seen under the neckpiece.
5. Spaceman
Another space guy... but I do love that weapon - so gorgeous! I want more of those. The white neckpiece has potential too :)
In all, the white color scheme is very nice, and makes for great variety from the previously garish versions.
The torso is nice, with a belt, and space legs are very useful also for winter sports (and a great replacement for those ridiculous full diaper legs).
6. Lion King
(Ok, strange name, but.. ) A gorgeous klicky, though we prefer our knights NOT in skirts. And all gorgeous parts as well ).
The sword is great, and a different color than the highlander's.
The chainmail and shoulder pieces are brighter than the usual light metal. Which btw doesn't match the "chainmail hair" color. They're nice. The crown is also in the newer brighter gold. Just makes it harder to match all of these with other parts. But variety is good.
The torso and skirt are great. And he even has flat shoes - though in silver ::)
The strange part - his arms. He has black skin hands (this is messy). I'm not sure if the idea is for him to have leather gloves... but it is poorly done. Usually, with playmogloves, either we have a "naked" hand underneath, or the hand is the same color of the gloves (better, imo). Like this.. looks plain weird. Easy to fix though, and arms with black skinned hands are always welcome.. there IS kind of a shortage of those, right?
We figured to keep two of them... one almost as is - but no fighter! - and make a knight and soldier from the rest.
-
7. Viking
He really doesn't look very vikingish. That design, I mean. Nice parts otherwise - especially the arms! And I was looking for those arms for a long time...
Anyways, definetely not like that. Torso and arms are not viking like at all. The hair+beard combination (that they used before.. on a viking too?) is amazing. He does have that odd mysterious face, with chinese eyes, but easy to fix, so.. all good.
The cloak really works with him :)
8. Agent
The weirdo of the lot?
The hair in (not very common) blonde is nice for variety. And I like the blast of the gun (new part, I think?)
I like the body printings. Very very nice.
I think he will fit wonderfully with the guy from the giant legolike robot... But NOT with that hair (the robot guy gave up his Elvis hair too, to the hairdresser ;) )
9. Wizard
He is pretty. A better color than the previous pale green. Maybe a couple more series and we will finally have a grey wizard?
The torso and legs (besides having a really nice design) work great together. However, the belt kinda "breaks" the effect, and the long beard covers most of the torso. Both easy enough to solve (we need WHITE normal beards!). And the belt and beard are welcome pretty parts.
The worse part is the arms. They are completely off, imo (and apparently everyone else's). Easy enough to fix. And those are nice arms.
I have no idea why they gave him no cloak. A wizard with no cloak is like a Cylon with no red light (or a Starbuck with no jokes).
I believe with those issues fixed, he makes a wonderful wizard.
-
10. Thief
A strange idea, not as bad as a machine gun armed fat gangster, but still.. I can't bring myself to really like him, and I think the problem is the hair. That head and THAT hair make for a dreadful dreadful combo.
The bag is quite nice though. And the hat too.
11. Pirate
He is a nice klicky, and well equipped. Though I am not very fond of that pistol's sculpt, that is probably a matter of personal preference.
He has a very vikingish torso, and the ever useful legs. Shame they are in green again, the easier ones to find, at least in my experience. The arms are also new, maybe? Or at least not very common, I think.
12. American Football Player
Another handmelon player.. I like them, but we end up with one of each... Lame for a team, but we don't really want to make proper teams (however many those are :-[ ). I do love the melon :) And a black guy (needs new hair!) adds more variety.
The printing on the helmet is not good (as usual) :( They really should be fixing this, since it is a recurring problem.
The legs have a stripe on the side, and the torso has printing on the back as well.
-
5597 Girls
1. Pink Fairy
The mandatory pink fairy, rushed as usual - WHERE have these people ever seen socks worn like that!?
The hair looks very nice, I like weird hair colors and I think this is a different sculpt than the previous pink hairs. Besides, it is also a uncommon shade of pink.
The legs are all flowery too..
2. Guitar Player

BOOTS! FINALLY. What a breakthrough. I was mostly looking forward to the booted speedos. That is definitely the highlight of this series.
She is GORGEOUS.
The new legs (which I absolutely LOVE) are even better than the gladiator's, I think, because of the pants.
And the torso is also adorable (screamed "centaur" to me as soon as I saw it!), and quite detailed, in front and back, with nice tattoos...
The hair is very nice, and seems an uncommon brightish orange.
I am not overly fond of the skirt (not a fixed one, a "dressing" one), but my sister likes it a lot.
We will keep all of them (though I guess all would be wasted on a guitarplayer), and need more!
3. Farm Woman with Flowers
A pretty farmer. Nothing spectacular, but she does have flat feet, and a pretty torso with very nice designs.
The skirt is plain under the apron.
I also like her hair, though it is not uncommon, I guess.
-
4. Lady with Umbrella
The mandatory big skirt "girl". However, this time... She is very striking, and stands out, probably because she is not pink like 544654 others.
We are in love with her hair. Not only the sculpt is great (and I believe we have ONE), the white makes it even more... unique.
The colors work very well together (and orange is not that common either!), the lace in the sleeves is a nice touch... a very very very beautiful lady.
5. Woman with Dog
A nice addition.
The woman looks ripe with potential - a good looking white torso, flat feet..
But the star is the doggy
I know the sculpt is not new, but we don't have the other one YET..
The basket would probably be a LOT nicer if it was brownish instead of pink..
6. Witch
A different witch, with the usual yellow broom.
I like the spidery print, though I think it is not very useful to reuse.... Not fond of the high heels.
She has a very.... unique face. Unfortunately painted, but still very... different.
-
7. Bellydancer
She looks nice, and adds a bit of variety for those type of legs.
The torso is interesting, but not really sure what for (I mean as a separate part). Since the legs are also showing skin, it is hard to reuse them (at least without cleaning, and that would be a waste).
A shame she is dark skinned (the only dark skinned "girl" in the series) - she'd have specific purpose otherwise.
The hankerchief is VERY VERY golden. Shiny.
She is also another example of the wildly varied quantity of accessories.
8. Rabbit
No comment.
I'm not sure she is not made from existing parts. We should see if we have an even number of those.
The torso has a nice color, but the silly tail.
9. Businesswoman
She is a pretty klicky, though not really "core".
The hair in blonde is not very common (though I am not fond of the sculpt, as everyone knows by now).
Best part is the computer with the playmobil site! And the logo on top
-
10. Clown
The hair in that color is new.. the rest.. moronic diaper pants and a suitable clownish torso printing and head. And yet ANOTHER non-balloon-shaped baloon. Is it so freaking hard, to do balloons in their proper shapes!? GAH.
I suppose she does work well as a clown though...
11. Skater
For some reason, I tend to like the skaters.. especially those who no longer wear diapers!
The sleeves in different colors didn't really convince me at first - but then again that nice torso does have both colors, so they end up being a good combination. Plus, the fact that those are "female" arms, with the pointless right+left curves makes it harder to change.
The grey hood is beautiful (and there was an extra! ;D). A shame the pink shoes and helmet. But I still think she is very beautiful. I wish she would have the same "wrist things" the other one did.
This time, no other accessories (the other had a juice pack, for whatever reason).
I think she works well as is, but not very useful as parts (except the hood).
12. Gladiator
Ah.. The other best one (there can be two best, right? ;) ). The first one I opened (having the packs organized rules!).
BOOTS. And a gladiator. With BLACK undies.
The torso is great too, though black, and not silver. Still, I think the torso is very very nice, from both front and back. My sister thinks it looks "fake", as in latex, not real armor. She may have a point.
And the accessories are fine too, except for that dreadful shield. Easily fixed.
Actually, as a "full" klicky.... I also don't like that helmet for a gladiator. Or the sword. Again, easily fixed (and unlike the shield, those are great).
A skirt (those wrap around ones would be perfect) in brown+metal would be a LOT better than that silly loincloth. It does not become her. This is not so easily fixed...
We're obviously keeping all of them, and more wanted. I MIGHT try to fix the skirt. Saxa's would be fine, but that is harder (and then sort of fragile).
-
And there. That concludes my series 8 review. Sorry about the delay, but it was out of my hands. And better late than never, right? ;)
If anyone wants a pic of something else, let me know, and I will add it.
Kept ones later.. That needs to be done by the poptub.
-
Excellent. I am so glad that you posted this! Great review and pictures, as usual! I am looking even more forward to getting these now. I need like ten of each of the good ones...
The new boots look even better than I thought they would. And some of the new parts look great, like the claymore in that colour. I hadn't realised that the warrior king was supposed to have leather gloves; that is a weird way to do those. But, I for one, think the crusader is very nice. ;)
-
Well, so far I had no luck trying to get more gladiators and rockers :( , which are by FAR my favorites.
-
Thank you for this very detailed and funny review. :thanks:
I agree the guitar woman and gladiator are the best. The clown is horrible, but I never like clowns. But actually that is the only one I really dislike. The doggy is so cute!
Great serie this time.
-
Great review, thanks Tahra! The dog and the butterfly are both new color variations this time out, and two new shields too. I really like this version of the lion shield a lot.
-
Haha, loved this review! Thanks so much!
I saw some interesting parts, here and there, but I don't think I'll be getting many of these clickies.
I really like the lady with parasol, and the colour of the Lion King's skirt ( ;D ).
I even like the bunny lady for parts (minus the tail: the clothes could come in handy for Victorian women).
-
thanks very much for the detailed review! :)
Some great clickies there, especially nice to see good pictures of the female gladiator since that one remained quite a mystery due to the big shield blocking the view on all official depictions.
Looking forward to seeing them available here, I have yet to see them in any Dutch stores and I checked several locations.
-

I have no idea why there must be so many clowns... I find it odd. And those legs. I can't stand them.
The dog and the butterfly are both new color variations this time out, and two new shields too. I really like this version of the lion shield a lot.
I didn't know about the butterfly (and there was an extra :) ) - thanks!

The lion king has a very nice color, yes (except the hands).. I don't see anything special about the rabbit woman (though the torso does have a nice color)..
Some great clickies there, especially nice to see good pictures of the female gladiator since that one remained quite a mystery due to the big shield blocking the view on all official depictions.
Yeah, that was not nice AT ALL. I was quite curious myself.
Looking forward to seeing them available here, I have yet to see them in any Dutch stores and I checked several locations.
Me too. Maybe I can feel me a couple fo gladiators or rockers >:D .. But never saw s7 here :(
-
I very much appreciate the closeups tahra. Thanks!
To pick a nit: although the sword is nice, the king shouldn't have a claymore/bastard sword. Such swords were wielded with two hands and were not used with shields. Also they were wielded by troopers, not kings. OH WELL!
-

Well, playmobil always used the longswords as common ones... so..
It's fine with me! I love that sword, so... and easy enough to fix. I still think a sword doesn't go well with longskirts anyways.... :P
-
Would be neat if they added a short sword to the arsenal, but still. easy enough to give that clicky a different weapon.
Personly I am more concerned about the female gladiator getting a huge sword instead of a gladius. I dont have that many gladiuses after all and I dont find that the bigger swords fit the theme.
-

Nom, they don't. But at least the sword is nice - unlike that shield... (I believe I have bought a hundred or more of them gladius by now :-[ )
I don't think the helmet fits either, or the loincloth, but oh well.
-

I found a counterexample. Looks like I was wrong! I still maintain that this is a ceremonial use and would not be seen on the battlefield.

-
Its a neat sword though which is as of yet still extremely rare. Its sold with a big castle and two figures have it, and its troublesome to obtain the right figure.
Besides, plenty of regular swords to be found to replace it with and personly I always like getting more of weaponry that I have little of.. I only have one of these swords.
-

Exactly! :)
And the color + painting of this one is great!
-
Don't get me wrong, I think that sword is awesome! My Scotsman wields his proudly.
-
Clearly this klicky is posing for a portrait, so he has his most impressive sword. ;)
-
And the kept ones... better late than never, right?
Boys
(http://www.playkingdoms.com/temp/playmoproc/s8-boys-keep1.jpg)
Cruzader - like I said, reducing them. Changed one of the existing ones to use this different torso+shield.
Fisherman - original
Spaceman - original
Lion King - kept two, and changed them to a knight and a wizard
(http://www.playkingdoms.com/temp/playmoproc/s8-boys-keep2.jpg)
Viking - obviously, torso and arms had to go.. and I gave him a "normal" head
Agent - just changed hair (and added the beard)
Wizard - as everyone else, changed the arms. Also removed the belt, and gave him a cloak.
American Football Player - just changed the hair (duh)
Girls

Pink Fairy - original
Farmer - original
Lady with Umbrella - original (well, minus umbrella)
Woman with Dog - original... considering the design, my sister found her a job - pet hairdresser!
Witch - original

Bellydancer - original
Businesswoman - skirt instead of pants (my sister's notion - a great idea!)
Skater - original
Gladiator - mostly changed, but same legs+torso...
The rabbit woman and the confederate soldier will be to check.. Others are just parts..

Wow that neckpiece really cleaned up that girl gladiator, she looks a lot better.
I do like that you got creative with the lion king, but I'd have to say I still prefer the original.
Sadly I didnt get him today, just got back from shopping, got two figures. A viking which is good, and a football player who I cant really use.
Might be usefull though since he is black, might be able to make a nice black clicky with figure parts, I dont have many black clickies.
But I imagine an american football player can be used for a gag picture or such for a contest.
I'll be messing up the viking too, definatly giving him another head and a different chestpiece if I have a figure to switch it with. I dont dare to take normal clickies apart.

Yeah, my sister says it makes the torso ok - she didn't like the torso all showing.

I don't like knights in skirts..

Why not?

I am just affraid something might break, I'm very concerned about that. And I am quite fine with using the standard clickies mostly, I tend to just mix hairstyles and accesoires which seems to work fine mostly.
-
I've popped a few klickies, sweating each time, and I've noticed that the internal neck always suffers a little damage, and the "skeleton" sometimes does too. So it's not something I'd do frequently to one klicky, and I'm reluctant to do it at all with out a compelling reason.
-
99.99% of the time there is no real damage... I don't usually pop any more than once, anyways.

Finally got the gladiator girl and the Lion knight. ;D
Someone sold them on Marktplaats, 3 euros each but thats how much they seem to cost in stores too. And the seller sold many parts for 0,25 each so I'm quite happy to get a few extra gladiuses, a black roman cape, a standard soldier's chestplate, a black swordbelt and a red pirate headwrap that seems perfect for medieval too.
Might give the lion knight the sword belt, not sure yet. The gladiator will definatly get a gladius, and it allows me to give any gladiator that used a longer sword to now use a gladius instead since I find it more fitting. And cant ever have enough roman capes, roman cape is best cape. ;)
By the way, I get the idea that the female gladiator may not be intended to be a gladiator at all, but is meant to be an amazon? They just went the easy way with using the roman helmet instead of making a new greek one. Still doesnt excuse the hideous shield, but somehow it makes sense.
I'll definatly still use her as a gladiator though!

Yes, it is!

I think as-is, the klicky is a mess - as a gladiator, and worse as an amazon. But a LOT of potential.
But like I said, I changed my mind about that stupid shield. It is PERFECT ;D ;D

If only they came in white.
-
I think they only have them in black, dark brown, red, blue and dark blue.
And way too often they gave roman clickies a non roman cape. >:(

I haven't seen the brown - can you confirm the set? And the dark blue I'd call purple, the one from 4273 Commander's Tent.
Agree on the second. I'm changing out my centurions with proper red Roman capes.
-
Dark brown comes with Albrecht Drurer. He's the only non roman clicky to get the roman cape. (and hopefully not the last)

Whoa! I have one of those MIB but obviously hadn't looked at it very closely. Thanks!

Just wanted to post here that I finally have the Series 8 figures up on Animobil, with lots of photos of each including the exploded views.
They are HERE (http://www.animobil.info/shields/text/5d0863aa%28shields%29-1132.html)
Overall it was a great series. I really like most of the boys and a fair number of the girls. Most disappointing was the Bunny Lady who is just a rerelease of an older figure. I wish they had at least switched out some of the colors on her. The extra dark basket is kind of nice but otherwise she was blah, and I really like the bunnies. My favorites in Boys are the Fisherman and the Robogangman, and in the girls the Lady and Jasmine. Love the dog and the butterfly as well of course.
Did you notice for once there was no obvious Princess this series? A nice change.

Great! Thanks for the update and fantastic pictures, as usual. :)

Thanks, that's a useful resource!

Thanks a million Tiermann, I had no idea until I saw your pic that the Crusader's shield's handle can be turned around. Never seen that before, and it makes me very happy!
Also, anyone know why the green king's hands are brown but his face is pink? Have they been listening to cachalote?

I think it was an attempt at giving the look of leather gloves underneath his chainmail.
-
Seems like they should have gone with black. That brown is more likely to be read as skin color IMO.
Also I looked it up and a red hat and trim on a Confederate means that he is in the artillery.

I agree. That would have been better. :-\ Perhaps they had a surplus of those arms.
