In homage to Joshua Slocum, we're trying to make a playmobil scale replica of his sloop "Spray" based on a 3174 ship
Joshua Slocum (February 20, 1844 – on or shortly after November 14, 1909) was the first man to sail single-handedly around the world. He was a Nova Scotian born, naturalised American seaman and adventurer, and a noted writer. In 1900 he wrote a book about his journey Sailing Alone Around the World, which became an international best-seller. He disappeared in November 1909 while aboard his boat, the Spray.

Many thanks Tiermann, leefert & Baron Marshall !!
Here are some pictures of this weekend progress. The lower deck is glued, some putty here and there and priming the deck and hull and testing the shrouds... oh, and the little custom support

It looks great so far! You've put a lot of work into this.
-
That's looking excellent. The deck houses are really nicely done.
We used to have more people into ships than are on much currently. Where are Hadoque and BlackPearl? They were our two biggest ship fans I think.

It is looking mighty fine! :)9

Oooh! I missed this thread before now! I'm loving it!!
I can't wait to see the rest
-
Looking great!
-
Yay!
This reminds me of my ship building days! The transformations are great, and I just loooove the kitchen!
But… you're leading me to ask you the same question I asked Playmoleo Vermeulen (hope you know his work, he's on FB): why use a PM hull then? I used to make the hulls with ply wood from scratch, using only the architect's plans, it's so much rewarding when you see your hull take shape! And it's not that hard, and you learn so much about how a real ship was built!
Keep up the good work anyway! I can't wait to see your captain too!
-
Looking forward to what it will look like when finished. :)
why use a PM hull then?
Then it is made of PM-plastic and thus it can be called a PM-custom ;)
-
It's also faster I guess, than building it from scratch.
-
Hi there! Thnx for the replies...
I'm using a PM hull because that's what I do: PM customs ;-) Also because it's faster but the main reason it's the shape of the original 'Spray': it reminded me a LOT the PM schooner. A very good starting point.
I do build some ships from scratch, but always in PM scale. Lots more fun!!!!
BTW, I'll be starting some new threads on a custom build 99% PM plastic 1900's tugboat made from a pair of pirate galleons, a galleon section model from a children guitar, a spaceship from a hand vacuum cleaner and a Harley WLA. Hope you like them!

i've read his book 5 or 6 times.
it still amazes me every time.
a story filled with short stories (the nails in the top pf the deck at megellan's strait is one of my favourites).
i hope your work is still going on.
from what i've seen, it will turn out great.
congratulations. :wow:
-
OMG so AWESOME! LOVE THIS BUILD! WELL DONE!!!!!!
-
:) any news on this beautiful project?
;) 2 things must not be forgotten - the dog and the pilot of the pinta ghost.

New pics coming very soon! This project was left aside for lack of time reasons, but it's being continued and finished at the moment.
Sorry for the delay, my apologies.
Btw, there's two more projects going on and new topics will be open.

I missed this thread when it first started but picked it up today. It is a most interesting thread, a truly outstanding project and a great tribute to Joshua Slocum. I read a review of his book late last year when a paperback copy was published (the book has never been out of print since it was first published) and was wondering whether to buy it; this thread has decided me to do so.
-
Thanks a million for the compliments!
Go ahead and buy the book, it's one of those that keeps in a family's heritage. I was blown away when I read it, love the old writing style and the epic journey and ship descriptions.

Dieser Umbau ist faszinierend! Ich freue mich schon auf die nächsten Bilder. Amazing custom - looking forward to new pics!
