Maybe this has been discussed already, but what about implementing the thanks button feature of phpBB? I see a lot of cool posts that I want to show my appreciation for, but I don't want to lengthen the thread with yet another "Cool!" post. The thanks are added to the bottom of the OP according to the thanker's names.
What do people think?

Personally, I think actual replies are part of what makes this forum so friendly.
-
I agree bb. :)

This feature normally does not lead to lesser number of posts, especially those of 'quality' (e.g. in KW). It is just another means to leave a positive feedback. :irish:
-
I don't want fewer posts overall, I just want a way for ME to respond without typing! :D
-
Using Facebook a lot, I sometimes think a 'like' button would be nice. There are only so many ways to say: great.
On the other hand I really enjoy reading through all the comments and I appreciate it that people tell eachother what they like best. I think adding this button would make me lazy doing that!
-
I agree that it might hinder the discussions. It does seem much more friendly to see people responding with comments, even if they are just like "thanks for the information" or "that's a really cool design" or the like.
-
The feature exists because it does not hinder discussions and because it adds positive feedback where else nothing happens. It could be tried for say 3 months and be removed again if it does not work out.
-
It may be a feature of phpBB, but I don't think SMF have a mod for this yet. At least I haven't managed to find one on their site...
-
I don't really need a thanks button, but sometimes I did want to say that I thought someone's comment was very funny. A 'like' button of sorts would be nice then, 'cause if you don't have anything else to add to the discussion, it seems a bit silly to just post a smiley.
Maybe someday :)

http://smfhelp.org/index.php?topic=63.0 (http://smfhelp.org/index.php?topic=63.0), it is a kind of [Like] in SMF. It could be modified to display another text if I understand correctly. ;)

Hm I think its fine how it is now, can always leave a comment to say what you like about it.
Otherwise you might get some sort of competition or such, even against yourself regarding amount of likes. Some people might feel insecure if their first project receives so much more likes than their second one for example, even when they put more effort into it.
Just pointing out that it may have a nasty unintentional side effect.
With comments, I think that a few elaborate comments can really make it all more worthwhile than a 100 likes.

This was my main concern too.
A long time ago we used to have a "karma" feature (built into SMF) which was a little bit similar to a "like" function. You could give a member a positive or negative point and the tally was then recorded on their profile. This worked quite well for a time until we realised some people were taking it very seriously and checking their points every time they visited the forum. It was also too easy for someone with a grievance against another member to abuse the karma feature, and that became upsetting for some people.

The idea is that users who have no idea what to write apart from 'I like it' or 'well done' (and then don't write at all) can leave some 'quick' feedback additional to the written comments. I guess that it is helpful too for international users without the ability to express themselves in elaborate English. And it can be used by (new) members who want to express late approval instead of resurrecting old threads (which is sometimes seen as a problem). Of couse you can still write what you like about it.

The very same side effects occur with comments.

Obviously forums are meant to discuss and to collect and write comments. As said these [likes] provide just additional positive feedback that goes unnoticed otherwise.
It actually works were I have seen it, e.g. in KW where the same discussion went on before it was introduced.
