Title: Notorious Belgian pirate captures French ship-of-the-line
Post by: Hadoque on September 28, 2013, 18:36:31
Sailing through The North Sea Channel can be dangerous, Belgian pirates are allways lurking to get a big catch.
So experienced today a Dutch mercenary captain (Sir Leo Van Zundert) of a French Navy ship-of-the-line, who lost his trimaster to... well, have a guess  ;D
After some "parlez" we agreed he would be released to go back to The Netherlands, and also he would receive quite a reasonable fee for having surrendered his ship without a fight. (He knew of course that any "Resistance is futile"   :P )

Here she is, captured without a scratch: "Le Redoutable"

Beautiful ship, please post some more pics (masts, hull...).

So is this now in your possession, Erwin? Did someone built it for you?

Cheers,
HDL

Beautiful ship model!

Any chance of more detailed close up photos?  A making of thread?

It is now evening here, but I'll try to take close-up pics during the coming week (lighting conditions permitting).  :)

This beautiful ship has indeed been added to my fleet now. :yippee:  :captain:
It was not build on my request, but I got the opportunity to purchase it  (for a price I don't want to disclose).

The maker is a Dutch Playmobil ship-customizer, Playmoleo.  He build the ship just because he likes doing things like that, though it is the first trimaster he made. The ship is mainly made of 3940/5135 shiptypes, but also parts of the 4290 shiptype where used (like for the cabins / stern), and parts from Noah's ark are included as well.

Playmoleo usually sells his custom-ships to start new projects (he has now a project to build the historical Spanish trimaster "Santissima Trinidad" (with 3 gundecks below the upperdeck!!), so I asked him if he would consider selling the "Redoutable". He said yes, but there were also other candidates to buy it. However, after a few days I turned out to be the most serious one, others maybe backed down after getting knowledge of the purchase-conditions.
I did have the advantage that we live relatively close to one another, so he brought me the ship today by car, which is a lot easier and safer for him (and the ship) then having to send it in a big crate to a buyer in a more distant country.

More photos (though not many close-ups I believe) can also be seen on my facebook-timeline, where I shared Playmoleo's picture-album of the "Redoutable"-project.

A superb edition to your fleet, Erwin, and well worth whatever you paid - it's a work of art.

Still waiting for more pictures.... especially the captain's cabin and the upper deck...(the canons are the fake ones?)

This motivates me to apply a saw to some of my hulls...

More pics & close-ups coming soon, Stefan. (thing is I have to resize them all considerably before being able to post them on Playmofriends).

The canons below deck are indeed the "slide-in cannon-mouths" from the 5135-ship. Reason is it would be much too difficult to reach and displace standard Playmobil canons in the lowest deck.

Unfortunately the captain's cabin can't be opened up anymore, that is a downside but I can understand Leo made it like this, keeping in mind the ship's castle/stern is mainly made of 4290-cabins build (with glue and reinforcements) the one on top of the other. It would have been nice if it were accessable, but as the ship is not really intended for play it doesn't bother me that much.  There is a stearman's house though, just behind the mizzen-mast, on the maindeck's level.

Meanwhile I've made some refinements, of which I will also post pics:
I've replaced both the anchors by big Playmobil ones from the Pirates' Ghost Ship, and the fat anchor-ropes with somewhat thinner ones. I've also switched the red canon-carriages on the upperdeck for brown ones, as imo brown fits better with gold-coloured canonbarrels. And on each side I've added a carronade on the officer's deck (for that I'm using the black wheelless canon-carriages). Further some addiotional details like 2 more lanterns on the stern, a ship's bell on the main mast, etc.

Works for me! I don't owe a 5135 (yet) but I bought these clip canons just in case I will built a trimaster myself - at least the lower deck might then be not playable.

Lokking forward to seeing your other pictures (no rush, Captain Hadoque)!

Cheers,
HDL

Pics are also on my facebook- and PCC-pages.
I should add them to Klickywelt too, I've been away from the German forum for some time... :-[

Here you can see I swapped the anchor-rope for thinner ones and exchanged the black anchors for original Playmobil ones from the Ghostship-set.

Pics beneath also show other details I've added like more lanterns, an ensign, carronades, ship's bell, etc.

Last one...

I know the flags aren't "historically" correct together - f.e. the ensign-flag on the stern is an invention by Playmobil (it's colours seem to hint somewhat to the Republic of France while the symbology is rather Royal of nature) and the blue flag with white cross on the fore topgallant mast is accurate for a French merchant vessel before the Revolution, but not for a warship after ca. 1789 - but I wanted to equip the ship with original Playmobil flags.

Believe me when I say: there has NEVER been a ship more beautiful and well-proportioned, ever. And I have seen many... A superb customizing job!

Excellent: Geobra, please look and imitate!

Thanks for sharing, Erwin!

Great rear end, streamlined, big guns, well proportioned.. its a beauty alright.  ;)

Nice to see the ship in action with the clickies on top. Really gives a sense of scale.  :)
