Title: How do you collect the Fi?ures?
Post by: chriscute on August 27, 2013, 03:55:48
Hi,

I collected the complete sets of 24 figures for each of the first 3 series of Fi?ures, but with series 4 I've decided to be more selective.  I primarily buy modern themes, so I'm not interested in more pirates and knights etc.; however, the collector in me still wants to complete each series!  All of this led me to wonder how other members approached the Fi?ures line.

Having been away from Playmobil for the last few years, I missed out on the start of the Mystery Figure releases.  I've managed to get maybe 75% of them from finding stores with unsold stock, but going forward, I think I'll be trying to get one of each.

One thing I love about the Mystery Figures is it gives me the opportunity to have a figure from a theme that I don't necessarily want to buy a larger set, but really like having a token figure.

And man, I wish all klickies came apart so easily!

If only!

I only buy the figures I would like to use for diorama making. That's how I try to limit my purchases of PM in general.

I have to be selective due to lack of space and money. My collection is mostly all before the 'gun' era, so knights, fantasy and history.

I agree with Salamander, if there's one with an interesting hairpiece, body, head or whatever, you don't have to buy a larger set but just that f?gure. When I have a list of f?igures from that series I want, I search an eBay shop where I can buy them in once.

It's pretty much a guessing game to me, if a series has several nice figures I take the gamble and try and get the ones I want, but this doesnt always happen sadly enough.

Never was able to get the king of series 4, tried to feel for the cape but theres a lot of figures with capes in that series. I have them all aside from the king.  :(

Had descent luck today with series 5. First time I took a chance with the girl figures since I want that archer lady. Bought 4 girl figures and 2 boy figures.

Results was:
-1 Viking.
-1 asian warrior in gold armor.
-Pink princess.
-princess with flowers.
-Tennis girl.
-Yellow fairy.

Not that bad considering I stick with collecting medieval and pirate themes and nothing else, I try to find figures that work for that.
Already have a few vikings so he can join that group, the asian warrior can be used in a story as a traveler from a distant land, the pink princess will probably be used a lot as a background figure and maybe a minor role sometimes, and the fairy looks very nice. Might remove the wings and give her a cape to cover up the hole.

Not too fond of the flower princess, parts might be useable to mix with other figures if I get more though. tennis girl is nice but not my theme. Again, parts can be used. Just glad I didnt end up with aliens or such since then I might not even get useable hairstyles.

I only get the ones that fit in with our themes and that I like.  So mostly the historical figures. I am perfect on the feel method so no superfluous figures.

The same goes for me. Sometimes I get multiples of the ones that have really good parts or that I really like. There are a lot that I never buy though, like most of the figures that fit into modern themes.

I've been fairly lucky to always be able to feel the figures I want. I do collect Knights and stuff like that but, I collect more on the basis of figures or stuff which I like or which holds a nostalgia with me obviously with the Mystery figures it's the earlier so I just tend to go with the ones which look good to me like the Dwarf, The King and The Aliens or ones which fit in with my interests like the Formula 1 type driver, The Roman solider and the Grenadier Guard I also got a t elast one figure to use some of his parts as it's cheaper than hunting the parts down through other means. I don't think I've got doubles of any figures yet apart from going back for a Dwarf for a friend but, obviously if you get extras of useful parts all the better  :)

i make my choices based on:

-custom posibiltities (not to customize among the surprise figures but to use the body parts for future ideas)
-the esthetics and originality of each figure (i've seen some mystery figures have been released in previous sets, which i find lame, hence i don't buy those)

I always get at least one of each, just for the sake of completeness. I don't necessarily keep a full set intact, though. Some that I don't like (I'm not into wizards, vampires, etc.) I just take apart and use for parts. Ones that have particularly useful hair pieces, or that I like as is but also want to customize, I will get extras of.

As I build dioramas for Kirkbean Exhibition I tend to buy most of my Playmobil to fit in with the dioramas I will be building next and because of lack of space, once the exhibition is over, a lot of my Playmo is put into storage for the next time I need it or duplicate items sold on. So, although I own it, strange as it seems, it often doesn't feel as though it is my collection, rather something that I collect to share.   :(

However, I do sometimes buy things that I particularly like, rather than for use in the exhibition and these together with collecting Specials and Fi?ures are my special treat to myself.  :)

Therefore as far as Fi?ures are concerned I like to collect one of everything and use any duplicates for parts.

I haven't got any series 5 yet and am missing a few of the series 4 males because my money has gone into the exhibition stuff recently, so I must now get on and look for the ones I am missing.

I never really was a fan of the Fi?ures, as I like to stick to themes that I already have a substantial collection of. Unfortunately, the Fi?ures remove any certainty as to what you're buying. Oh, how I miss Playmobil Specials!

I'd gues there would be quite a market for buying a lot of these figures and selling them online once unpacked, so everyone can get the ones they like.

There is! When you search eBay for "Playmobil series 5" (or 4, whatever you want), You'll find shops which exactly do that. The opened ones go for 4 Euro and the most wanted ones, like the green wizard or the dwarf even for 6-7 Euro.

Big Business...  :-\

didnt know the dwarf and wizard where that popular.

Keeping on to the wizard I have even while theres no magic in my world. Might use him as someone pretending to be a mage or someone who is hinted at being a mage without giving it away.  ;)

I'm new to this site (and playmobil in general). I just started buying my four year old some sets and there are more to come for Christmas and birthday coming up. I remember a while ago I would be in five below and see the figures and think they looked so stupid and never got them. Now... Ugh lol.

I just started to collect them and like a PP mentioned came late to the game and have just been buying out the left overs from my local toy stores and toys r us. No luck on series 1 but have gotten tons of series 2, quite a few in series 3 and just 2 girls and 5 boys of series 4. I really suck at feeling them out they all feel the same to me. So every paycheck I allow myself a 20 allowance to spend on figures and specials.

What's been really interesting is that even though I don't necessarily want all of them I've found that this has become a biweekly tradition with my son. I buy about 5 of them and we sit and put them all together and the. I hand them over. And he could really care less who they are (Elvis?? Lol) but it'd just fun for us!  He also realized how much he really really wants an air plane for his pilot and now today a race car for his race car driver lol and I've been saving all the doubles I get for his friends for Christmas presents :) win-win!

I am jealous, I am not very good at the feeling technique, our bags are usually filled to the maximum with air almost like a balloon so it is very difficult to feel much.  I have thought of poking them with a pin to let some of the air out but I do not want to get in trouble at the store.  Fortunately I have Tiermann to thank for complete sets, but then I have quite a few that I do not really want.

I haven't seen them locally (I'm not close enough to the toy store). The first 3 series I tried just buying the ones I wanted, but I'm still missing a few. For series 4 (and hopefully for future series), I've been joining the co-op here. I don't collect the modern ones, unless they are particularly interesting to me, so I either trade those or give them to my niece.

Just made an offer for some figures and knight christopher on marktplaats. (dutch auction site) Hoping the offer will be accepted.

Placed bids for the bandit woman of series 1, the knight from series 5, the king from series 4, knight christopher and some templars.

I really like the whole pop apart feature of the surprise figures. I was hoping one day to replace all the klickies skeletons. As to the individual ones since we collect all themes the more the marrier . Some we have full sports teams, we could always use more specific soldiers, and one could never have enough aliens . There are so many great older ones we need more of.

i wasn't into the figures series, but last week i had some un-expected time off for recovery and needed to keep walking.
so we went: SHOPPING!

anyhow, our local Blokker-store (http://www.blokker.nl) had some left-over series 1,2 and 3 bags for €1,99
I saw the image of the uncle sam and lady liberty, so i thought: let's give it a try.  :P
Fiddling around with the package, i managed to get uncle sam 2 times  ;D  Even my wife liked to do it lol.

So, now i just need to find Lady Liberty and a couple of others.  :P

I went to Tuesday Morning today, and they had the Series 3 women - the first f?gures I've seen at all locally.  But they were pretty well picked through, and I'm not too great at guessing (and the bags are filled with air due to elevation). I want the female baker, but no luck.

Ha, I've never really thought about that before. The pressure would be so much lower at some high altitude towns that they'd have to be bigger. That's unfortunate for you though, but at least you saved the awkwardness of feeling them. :-\

Guys, even if the bag is full of air you can shake piecesinto the corners and identify them that way.

I really tried. I'm about a mile up, so it's a lot of air. I could feel the surfing board, the Statue of Liberty crown, and the neck piece for the singer; and I could tell the difference between skirts and pants (though the hoop skirt ones were gone). It's pretty hard to find that cake. Or maybe there weren't any bakers left.

TRU here JUST got in series 4 (a little late?!), so they had an entire box full of both males and females. I wanted to buy a bunch of the boys for my kiddo, but I just dont have the time to stand there feeling around in the bags, so I just grabbed a random 15 of them out of the box and left. To my utter dismay I ended up getting 4 kings, 3 baseball players, 2 pirates, 2 clowns, a wizard (YAY!), the rapper guy, pilot, and an alien. 4 kings!! Boo :( So now Im just missing the mad scientist, indian, gladiator and fireman, which Ill prolly just buy off ebay to complete the sets. Maybe if I could figure out how to sell the extras on ebay... lol
