Title: Kirkbean 2013 - Modern Street with Parade
Post by: skypurr on August 21, 2013, 16:53:26
My apologies for the delay in posting photos of this year's exhibition; I have had a very busy month and it has taken me a while to sort out the photos. Also I uploaded them all to Photobucket then remembered I had not resized them so had them all to do again!

Unfortunately I found out during the exhibition that my camera would not work so "Thank you"  to Gordon who came to the rescue and using my memory card, took photos for me with his camera.  Later, before I packed away the exhibits I managed to take a few using my son's camera so these photos are a mixture of the two, hence why there are storage boxes around in some of them.

This exhibit was 16 feet by 4 feet and is of a modern street with a parade taking place.
Every year in Dumfries there is a parade called Guid Nychburris with bands and floats (decorated lorries) and this is based on this year's parade.

The diorama took about 2 days to set up, with all the shops to build and fill and all the people to put in.  I stayed at the hall all night on the Friday to make sure it was finished and thought I had more or less managed to put in everything that I had intended to.  It was only when the exhibition was over that I realised that I had forgotten to put drivers in the lorries   I don't know if anyone noticed but nobody said anything to me!

Because of the length of the diorama it was difficult to get an overall view but here are a couple of views looking down the street...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN2resized_zps92078ba1.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN2resized_zps92078ba1.jpg.html)

and up the street ...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN5resized_zps8ea7e7ec.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN5resized_zps8ea7e7ec.jpg.html)

The parade is always led by horses and riders who earlier in the day have ridden the boundaries of the borough.  These are led by the Cornet and the Cornet's Lass ...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN21resized_zpsb2ba176b.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN21resized_zpsb2ba176b.jpg.html)

Two floats in the parade are based on some that were in this year's parade ...

Africadabra - an African drumming group I am a member of ... (I'm the one with the ginger hair and my son James, is the one with the shaker  ;D )

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN34resized_zps1512040a.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN34resized_zps1512040a.jpg.html)

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN14resized_zps8b5dcbfa.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN14resized_zps8b5dcbfa.jpg.html)

And one called "One World" with people dressed as though from different countries...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN19resized_zpsd3cb9f81.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN19resized_zpsd3cb9f81.jpg.html)

The others are made up but loosely based on what has appeared in the parade in previous years ...

Pirates ...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN20resized_zps1a3f1b0c.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN20resized_zps1a3f1b0c.jpg.html)

Sports ...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN18resized_zps49249c88.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN18resized_zps49249c88.jpg.html)

and another group I am a part of and perform with - Dumfries and Galloway Ukelele Strummers and Singers (DUKES) ...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN16resized_zpscd9f6026.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN16resized_zpscd9f6026.jpg.html)

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN6resized_zps1c722f5a.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN6resized_zps1c722f5a.jpg.html)

I would have liked to have put a bit more decoration on the lorries given time but that was lacking in the end!

Often there are vintage cars in the parade - here are mine ...(notice the wedding party who have stopped to watch - we actually did pass a wedding where everyone stopped to watch in this year's real Guid Nychburris parade)

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN23resized_zpsce057dd6.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN23resized_zpsce057dd6.jpg.html)

Also in the parade are two bands, the guards band that I showed a little while ago ...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/GN13resized_zps1379ea15.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/GN13resized_zps1379ea15.jpg.html)

And the one I have had in mind for a long time and am really pleased with - The Stewartry Pipe Band ...

At the end of the street is a small cottage hospital ...

Across the road at the vets, while the receptionist can watch the parade, the vet and his assistants have to carry on working ...

At the toyshop no one is buying Playmobil from the large collection they have on display   :( ...

In the bakers and the butchers their usual customers are all too busy watching rather than shopping ...

Although the bank is closed, the cashier was in such a rush to get home that he forgot to lock up all the money ...

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/Playmobank_zpsffc57310.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/Playmobank_zpsffc57310.jpg.html)

And next door in the post office they are too busy to watch the parade as they are trying to get all the letters and parcels sorted before the van arrives to collect them ...

At the garden centre at the end of the street the customers and staff have all stopped to watch...

The parade will end on the school field - at the school although it is Saturday there are a few keen teachers and pupils putting in some extra study and attending an out of school art class ...

My son James set this up; it is based on his own school - I thought he'd done an excellent job!

So here is my first display - hope you like it.
I'll now get on with sorting out and uploading photos of the others.

Excellent Elaine!
   Love the pipe band!!

The parade idea is a great one for including a variety of figures and themes in a modern setting.

   What a great set-up!!  Must have taken ages.  The pipe band is my absolute favorite, they're awesome!  I wonder if there should be a couple guys with shovels directly behind all those horses, could get messy.   ;D

I can see why the exhibition was such a great success, Elaine.  Your display is gorgeous.  I have to agree with all the superlatives I have read so far.  It was very well thought out and executed.  I do love the pipers.  Are the bagpipes from Playmobil as well?  Have never seen them before.

Wow, that was quite a project.  I love how you incorporated real life with the display, and your descriptions were so fun to read.  It must have been fun to hear people identify with different parts of the parade day as they looked at the diorama.  Your bagpipe group is great, you should take some close-ups of them.

Congratulations on a very nice presentation.  How are you ever going to be able to top this next year.

Thank you all for your lovely comments, hearing what everyone says does make all the hard work worth while.
I do wonder each year how we are going to improve on the previous year  8}
However, plans for next year are already underway, I have a few ideas and Gordon, Walter and Claire are planning dios for next year too so that should take some of the pressure off me I hope!
I have been very busy with my drumming group this month, but we played our last event of the summer today (we played at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last weekend) so I hope to have more time to sort out my other photos and perhaps put a guide to how I made the pipers and bagpipes in the customs thread. Unfortunately they aren't Playmobil Joe, it would be great if Playmobil could make some.  Actually the pipers themselves were easy to make, the bagpipes though were a bit more difficult!  ;)

I've looked at all the pictures a couple of times, it really is lovely!

I'm curious, is there any barrier between the people viewing, and the display tables? I keep thinking that just one bump against the table and so many carefully arranged klickies tumble over. How do you prevent that?

I agree, there is just soooo much to see  :o  I wish I could have seen it for real!

Your supermarket is my favourite building: are those two supermarkets merged into one?
And all those shops with everything in it   The school even has a kitchen!

The bagpipe band is absolutely amazing...

Didn't you get any domino-effects with all those clickies? I sure hope not  :)
