Title: KIRKBEAN EXHIBITION 2013
Post by: skypurr on June 26, 2013, 16:01:41
It is getting close to this year's Kirkbean Exhibition (just over 4 weeks away) so thought I'd put a picture of the poster here.

(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/KirkbeanPosterresized_zps4ea1e94d.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/KirkbeanPosterresized_zps4ea1e94d.jpg.html)

For anyone new to the forum, Kirkbean Playmobil Exhibition was started by myself 4 years ago as a way to raise funds for our village hall here in Dumfries and Galloway, Southern Scotland.  I put on all the dioramas myself back then and although only small displays the event was very successful, prompting another exhibition the following year.

I now have help from Gordon (Playmofire) and Walter (Walts-Trains) and between us we fill the hall with dioramas ranging from 8 x 4 feet to 12 x 8 feet.

As the years have gone on, the event has been very well attended and looked forward to by many of the locals and holidaymakers alike.

As far as I know this is the only all Playmobil exhibition in the UK.

If anyone is in the area from 27th - 29th July please come along and say hello, you will be made very welcome.
(The refreshments with home baking are worth coming along for too   ;D  )

BTW A "Guid Nychburris" type parade is a local parade with horse riders, bands and floats (lorries) held in Dumfries every June.  The words mean Good Neighbours. - (I'm still desperately looking out for lorries for this!  )

I can come up with some.  How many and what size do you need?

Approved and Featured your event over at PCC, thanks for posting it there.

Are you planning the parade to be an annual feature? If so it would be fun to send a parade entry from Animobil. I could put together a truck or something that looks like a display float and send it to you. If you give some idea of how parade entries usually look for this kind of event then I could come up with something that fits in. Maybe we could have one from PlaymoFriends too?

Time certainly flies! was great to see the pictures of the last exhibition and am looking forward to seeing them for the 2013 event too!

Might be neat to do something typically scottish or brittish with playmobil, as far as I understand national pride is quite big in the UK.

Maybe a loch ness display including a suitable dino to portray nessie?  :)

very tempting.... all the kids have vacation then, and we could hop on a ferry to the UK.
hmmm,  talk to my wife and see if we have the finances for that.

Just trying to cvatch up  :-[

Can I get back to you on that Gordon - I need to sort my things out - I've had so many parcels arriving lately that I don't even know how many lorries I have!

That is a good idea Tim  :)  I do like the idea of contributions from different parts of the world.
Last year I put up photos taken by other Playmofriends and would like to do that again this year.

One very Scottish things that Scots take pride in is a pipe band - I'm working on that  :shhhh:

Good Luck Elaine

Thanks Mark, sorry you can't make it this year.  If you're passing by the week after and see a car outside the hall call in, I'll probably still be packing things away!

It would be great to meet you if you can make it.

Have finally got my collection together after 12 months of part of it being stored elsewhere   :yippee:
I will try and post some photos of it later.
Received a ds order today, just waiting delivery of a parts order now.
Today's plan is to get all the tables and boards set up (a few days early this year so hopefully not so many late nights  :crossed: ) then it's all systems go for this year's exhibition!
Playmofriends was offline last year when I was setting up so couldn't do a progress report, but I'll try and do one this year for anyone interested.

I, too, received a min catalogue order today and am waiting for a DS parts order and DS catalogue order to arrive.  (All of these were only paid for at the beginning of this week!)

I will post a plan of the layout I'm planning later today and also update you on what tables will be involved.

Diane and I are available from Thursday evening and all day Friday.

Elaine, to save you setting things up and then having to move tables about, would it be possible for the layout to be a peninsula eight feet wide and jutting out 12 feet from a wall, please?  Let me know if this is a problem.

Here's a plan of the railway layout I'm working on for this year's exhibition.  It is 12 feet by 8 feet and is at two levels, as last year, although instead of being in the middle the raised section this year starts at one end.  The height difference between the lower and higher boards is only about 1 inch, but space in the car prevents anything more dramatic.  On the plan, the raised section is squares 1 to 8, left to right and up and down, bordered in black.  This will be a mixture of grass and tarmac.  (Elaine, if you paint this before we arrive, green is going to be the majority colour, and I'll add the grey for the tarmac.  Alternatively, I'll do the lot if drying time and setting up time are enough.)

The squares marked 9 to 12 are the lower baseboard which will represent water, so blue's the colour.  It's meant to be a river estuary, so the banks of the estuary will be represented by sand.  The areas bordered in red are raised sections I will bring, as is the viaduct, which I'm working on currently.

There will be a station called Sea's End (on the way to Norfolk we pass a sign to a village called Moulton Sea's End, which is where I got the name.  At one time it possibly was near the sea or an inlet of the sea, but it certainly isn't now.  There will be various buildings and other PM items too.  I'm a bit limited on how much I can bring as we are staying on for a few days after the exhibition and so more luggage means less PM!

Currently I'm planning for the layout to be track powered and, if the layout is suucessful, then it will be the basis for a permanent layout.

The top line looks to have a very sharp bend in it, but this is a quirk of the computer software.  The line moves smoothly away from the main line of the oval in practice and gives room for a platform and a good long runaround.  I actually pinched the idea from a layout at one of the Malta railway stations.

Ooops! Elaine has pointed out I forgot to attach the plan!  Here it is:

I set up all the layout apart from a siding in the garage this afternoon at the operating height and complete with viaduct and bridge.  Test runs with an R/C loco pulling an engineer's coach showed all ran well, despite some of the track just being laid on cross pieces with no baseboard.  Further test runs with a tipper truck as well as the coach proved equally successful.  However, I am planning to use track power at Kirkbean so I shall do tests over the weekend with this.   I expect some problems as some of the track is old and connectors may be dirty so it will really be a test of what track to tack and what to replace from my spares box.

The viaduct and bridge supports need painting or covering in stone paper and there is still a small baseboard section to build for the estuary area, plus some painting of boards.

I'll try and leave access to a plug socket without having to use an extension lead Gordon.

Spent last night trying to sort out an assortment of tables to carry the boards - gave up at 11.15pm - the hall looked to be in complete chaos!

Been so busy I haven't had time to post  :-[
Despite starting to set up earlier than usual I ended up being at the hall all Friday night, eventually finishing at 7.45 on Saturday morning!
Day 1 and 2 have gone well - just one day to go.
Haven't had time to take photos yet so must do that tomorrow.  But it all looks great!
Managed to finish the pipe band - very pleased with that.  Gordon's display is really good and the children love Walter's play area.
It's been great to meet up again, we all went out for a meal last night then a Chinese Buffet tonight  ;D
Will post photos in a day or two.
