Hi everyone,
My name is Toni, I'm a 35 year old girl living in England. I became interested in Playmobil after buying a few Romans a couple of years ago - I studied classical history at university and when I saw the Playmobil figures in a shop I just had to have them. They stood proudly on display on my mantelpiece until a couple of months ago, when I thought it would be good to get some more.......then I discovered that the Playmobil Romans have been phased out.
Since then I have been having a fun time buying the few Roman items that are left from the Playmobil store and locating others from EBay, and then I thought I might as well get some Christmas items too, seeing as they would make nice decorations......and then I thought that the advent calendars looked great so I bought one each for myself and my husband.....and before I knew it, I had the beginnings of a collection :D
The Romans are now on display on the mantelpiece again, but I play around with them and change the display every few days (I've currently got some Christians being rounded up, but last week I had the murder of Julius Caesar on display ;D ) I've got the Roman arena on order and when that arrives I will set everything up on a table of its own.
I only had one Playmobil figure of my own as a child, the green farmer figure (which I know know was 3373), along with a few farming tools. He was friends with my sister's 1970s nurses and I used to play with them a lot. I would have loved more Playmobil back then, but hey ho, I can make up for it now!!
I really like the thought of customising figures too. I like painting and doing arty things in general, so that really appeals. I've just ordered a bunch of mystery bags from Series 1 and 2, and when they arrive I'll probably fiddle about with the figures that I'm not so keen on.
Anyway, it's good to be here :) I've really been enjoying reading the forum and it's good to be able to join in. If I can be of any help to anyone by sending stuff from the UK etc, please ask.
Cheers,
Toni :)

Hello Toni,
a warm welcome from Amsterdam, The Netherlands! I enjoyed reading how you got into playmobil, that your studies were one of the reasons. (not that collecting playmo needs reasons :) )Would be interesting to know that about other collectors as well.
Hope you'll have fun at the forum and I'm looking forward to seeing some of your playmo collection.

Hey welcome from Belgium, Antwerp!
Great to read about the way you became a collector, as Viviana said.
Dimitris and I studied classical history too :D Would love to see that Julius Caesar scene, by the way! We have a little scene set up here from 'Alexandria' (adding the Egyptian theme to the Roman one helps to create some 'volume', as there are not nearly enough civilian Roman sets around).

I really enjoyed reading your intro post, Toni - and great to have you here on the boards. I think I detect classical symptoms (no pun intended) of the slippery slope to playmoholism there :D Not sure if your historical interests sway towards medieval and Egyptian or Victorian, but there are plenty of gorgeous historical themes just waiting to suck you in :D
*waves from rainy Cumbria* (not as close to Skypurr as we at first thought, and quite a way away from Flatcat ;) )
Enjoy PlaymoFriends!

Welcome from Oregon USA!

Oh I'm REALLY interested in the medieval period.....I really like the look of the knights  I really have to be careful not to buy too much though as I don't have the houseroom. I wish I had a big, open attic or something as it would be such fun to create a whole town.
I've seen one Roman civilian family selling on Ebay recently, but I think it sold for quite a lot. I'd love to get hold of that at some point though. The Three Wise Kings set has been demoted, stripped of their crowns and jewellery and are currently portraying Christian martyrs ;D Plus, the child Mary from the smaller Nativity set is now Caesar's slave.

Hello and :welcome:, Toni, from Ontario, Canada! The Romans are also one of my favourite themes. I was quite disappointed to see them being discontinued after such a short shelf life. :(

Hello and warm welcome :welcome:  from Sheffield . Really enjoyed reading your introduction particularly the bit about your childhood farmer and his friendship with your sisters nurses  I've got to admit I've not got any Romans but, I like the look of the theme I have got a few Knights and would love to get plenty more particularly the 90's fellas
-
Welcome aboard! You should scrap the Roman theme and move to the Medieval ones! It's more fun there. ;D
But nah, the time period of the Roman theme is great too. I just would rather take the side of the non-Roman figures from that time. Most of my Romans have been pillaged.
It's great to have you here.

Hello and welcome from the Scottish Highlands! :ness:

Hi Toni, a warm welcome from the North Yorkshire coast!
Remember, you can still buy Romans from Direct Service, although only two sets.

(...) about your childhood farmer and his friendship with your sisters nurses (..)
My first bandit is very friendly with my sister's first nurse.... They've been together for almost.. uhm.. 32 years! Longer than a lot of marriages!

Hello
Welcome from the Netherlands!
-
Thanks again everyone :D my little Playmobil family has grown a bit today, as the Series 1 Mystery Bags that I ordered turned up :) I was delighted when I opened the first bag and got the figure that I wanted most of all - the Cavewoman and baby. The woman's one-shouldered fur tunic looks like a ragged slave outfit from Roman times, and the baby is just adorable! I also got a female robber, blue princess and rock singer and I wanted all of those so I'm happy. I have two of the male figures as well - the boxer and the mummy - and while I am not keen on these figures they are a great source of spare parts. The Boxer's angry, bruised face is going to be swapped into my happy Roman army and his legs are plain silver which will be handy for future customisation projects :)
