Title: Must have..
Post by: Jrodmobil on September 30, 2012, 02:53:54
As far as sets go, what do you think are the "must have" sets for the different themes. Just kinda curious as to what sets to look into when I'm on the hunt for new stuff. Thanks for your input.

I'm gonna guess some are the 3666 Castle
 and the 5300 Victorian house

That's a dangerous thing to ask here.

Do you have a theme or goal in mind? It's a really good idea to have a focus, or else you'll go broke. Personally, I'm aiming for getting all the Victorian pink/purple box sets.

For now I am going with the western stuff. Just bought the Colorado Springs. I just like to know what people are looking for.

What are these pink/purple boxes? Sorry, but I am still new to this and all I have learned thus far is what tid-bits I have picked up in here. Thanks again for your help.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, the Victorian sets (the 5300, the 5305, and the matching furniture, market and town sets) all came in pinkish purplish boxes instead of blue to distinguish them from the "boy" sets.

You can see the box fronts on PlaymoDB:

I'd gues that if you are into the medieval theme, the steck houses are the true must have to be able to create a village scene, theres many castles to combine it with, but the 3666 castle is simply the best of them considering all the features it has and the exellent selection of figures.

For western, I gues theres plenty of things to choose from.. it has many themes within it actually. Trains, indians, forts, a town, the ranch, bandits and gold seekers. Might be good to first focus on some of these things instead of all of them. Especially when it comes to those houses, I gues if you have one you will want to have more to create a little town. But I gues much could be done with western without a town even, maybe a western train is the only true must have.

Having a victorian house also seems like the real must have for that theme considering its focus is very much about town life and mostly those mansions.

As for pirates.. well a pirate ship can't be absent in any pirate collection.

For the western theme, Colorado Springs was a fantastic start, that's probably the biggest must-have for that theme. And of course you need a western train to go with it. ;) I think probably the next most sought-after set is the 3769 - Farmhouse (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3769). An adorable and hard-to-find set.

Of course Fort Bravo is also a must. And Silver Ranch, one of my all-time favorite sets.

I agree and it also has the elusive 4 way connector!

I agree with ya BB. I have Fort Bravo, and Silver Ranch. The train is yet to come. And the house, I do want it and it will probably be the next buy. The train will have to wait till I get my "playmo" room built in the garage so I have a area to set up a dio that will be somewhat safe  :). I have an idea in my head for how it will start out as a photo story. I was also just wondering what you all thought were the must have sets in PM, not just the western. Thanks again for your thoughts and input.

when you collect older sets it is easier to choose, I think. The victorian house, fort Bravo, western houses... But when you collect the newer sets it is harder to choose. As a animal/zoo collector I have no Idea what the "must have" is. Is it the first zoo, new big african zoo or zoo number 3240? Well, the last one was my first playmo set, so to me it is 3240.  :)

I like the 3420 set Playmozoo. My kids really enjoy the animals, I try to buy little lots of them when the price is right then we also will look up that animal on the computer so they also learn more about how they live and then its fun to watch how they set up their "farm", or as Meadow, our daughter calls it her animal rescue center and kids camp! ( since they only use kids to play with the set, and 1 adult to stand on the upper floor to over see the grounds lol ) We are going to be heading down to Oregon here in a while to go to the Wild Life Safari so I hope they get to see stuff they can add to their collection.  As to stay on the topic for an "animal set" I think I'd like to find a old color set for the white animals, maybe 3612.. or least the cow from it  :)

Hmm, that's a tough question. When you collect themes like medieval, it is fairly obvious which sets are 'must haves', such as the 3666 or the 3667, but the city life theme, which I collect presents a much larger range of sets to choose from. I must say though, that at least half of the sets in that category aren't worth mentioning. Looking at the large city life sets, I think that the 3988 is super versatile, although the pale green windows aren't very pleasant. The 4400 post office is a great set, probably one of the most realistic buildings PM produced. I can't really speak for the supermarket, although I think it looks superb, too bad it had a short shelf life. :(

For the Victorian theme, I have a soft spot for the 5305, even if the 5300 is the big one. Of course, no one wants an empty house, so furniture is a must. The original '89 and '90 furniture is popular. For current sets, there's the FAO Schwarz exclusive - a bit sparse on its own, but a great addition to a Victorian collection.

I think another set that is a general must-have is the 3015 - Jungle Ruins (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3015), especially for any kind of animal theme. It's just an awesome set and can be used as scenery for so many different things.

Was not familiar with the post office.  I agree it is pretty cool.

For the Victorian theme, I have a soft spot for the 5305, even if the 5300 is the big one.

There is something very special about the 5305.  It is much more cottage-like and cozy although its footprint is about the same as the 5300.

Indeed. It has a "1st house" feel.

Well I collect all things modern, including trains and other themes and individual sets that take my fancy. As such, the 4301 Riverdale Station was a must and is one of only a handful of sets that I have kept MISB. The 4109 carriage is currently winging it's way to me from the U.S. This one is MIB and I have been after it for a long time.

My next priorities are perhaps a bit random: 3258 Blue 'Globetrotter' Campervan and the Polar sets 3460, 3463 and 3464, all MIB and I would also love to get my hands on an MIB Antex pink jeep 3940 (just because it's pink!)

oooo ahhhhhh the elusive 4301, I have half of one  That is a very nice unique set, unique in that it is a red stecks building.

Pink jeep, I do not think I have ever seen it or I must have blocked it out if I have  :P The 3940 is the ship. Do you think it is listed in the collector book?

Don't remember seeing the 4301 Riverdale Station before.  It is a beauty, the red color is wonderful!

Watch out for the price, they get to "run away" quite fast  and often  :( I have been looking for a reasonable priced one for years. If you want a mint in sealed box they can easily get to the $200 mark

It's a very difficult question. I have so many old codes in my mind that I must have!!!!
But I do agree with bb, the farmhouse 3769 is one of them that I want so much.

George. :)

Music to my ears, please vote for it on the next (if there is a next) round of classic DS re-releases. We need votes for that and other old western buildings  I want dozens of them and I need so many parts for the ones I do have . I even got comments on how beautiful it is at the Fair diorama

I'd vote for it a hundred times over if I could. I love that house, it's absolute top of my wish list right now, way above even Colorado Springs station. And I want several of them, not just one. Geobra, are you listening?

I have found that I can use the house dozens of times in a  diorama but you only need one train station per town. I would also buy the station but I would rebuild it for other uses. The house is near perfect just the way it is. Love that front porch with an old fella in a rocking chair and some chap sitting on the stairs playing a guitar.

If I see, a new voting about that, I will vote Ras. You can be sure about that.

yay, all we need it dozens more to vote for it

As to what sets are on my "must have" list. It is the definitely the 4052 train as many times as possible (financially or physically). It is even rare in Europe and very rare in the US. I never see Geobra/LGB making it ever again as it will not be child proof in any way. The only way would be to sell it as an adult hobby toy and Geobra is not in that business, kids come first.  :'(

I would like to see them get in that business, though, and make a few items marketed toward adult collectors without necessarily being child safe or appealing to children. Lego does it! But that's a subject for another thread I suppose.
