Title: hello from amsterdam again!
Post by: viviana on September 29, 2012, 09:06:33
Hello playmofriends!
nice to be back after I've been away for a while... I used to store almost all of my playmobil in my student room. but somehow, last year I felt the need to put it away and 'deplaymo' my place. i don't know exactly why, I think a part of me hasn't accepted that I like playmobil so much? but very recently I've been feeling the urge to build it all up again, I've really missed it. When I now look at my place, it feels like something important is missing. And yet, I feel somewhat embarrassed having to admit this to myself. Does any of you recognize this? Maybe you've had the same experience? thanks in advance for sharing your stories!!

Hello, welcome back from Portugal!

As to your... predicament, can't relate. I never denied it or needed an excuse.  ;D   Friends from college and work gave/give me playmobil on my birthday

Nothing to be embarassed about - and there's plenty of us too..

Hi from Amsterdam, too ;D
I sort of know what you mean, but I don't have a huge collection like some over here, so I am not completely familiar with the problem.
Btw: You didn't actually 'sold' your playmobil when you said 'deplaymo', right?!

There was a time when I wasn't ready to admit how much I loved playmobil, but I'm totally over it now! I say be yourself, and if you want to have playmobil everywjere, do it!

Hello, and welcome from Scotland. :)

I kept my collection secret from friends and colleagues for a long time....and sure, when I told them some thought I was crazy 8}, but most thought it was really cool to have a hobby/collection. Many also then told me about something that they collect or do as a hobby so chances are, your friends and colleagues are the same. Don't be surprised if they have a secret comic collection or toy collection too! ;D

Hello and warm welcome  :welcome:

here are times when I've felt embarassed about my collections but, I share it with my friends who I work with and who are admittedly rather childish and they understand, it's perfectly normal I find to feel embarassed when buying toys and stuff like that but, if you really want something you'll find the reaction isn't normally to bad I egt some god reactions when I'm taking photos of my Action Men out and about, just got to enjoy what you do.

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of playmobil. As to your concerns about how other people think about you and your hobbies, life is too short to stop doing what makes you happy, its not like you are hurting puppies or something sick like that  ;)

its a toy and it brings you joy  :confetti:

I can relate to this, my hobby is still quite secret and I have everything stored away when not setting something up for pictures.

Sadly the general mentality in the Netherlands lacks emotion, and theres a lot of narrow minded people around who wont even try to understand anything thats not part of their daily life.

Considering that I am currently unemployed, I'd rather get a job first before really opening up about my hobby. It's odd that the more succesfull someone is in life, the more tolerant people seem to become of their quirks.

If you are poor, you are "crazy". If you are rich, you are "eccentric".  ;) Such is society...

I completely agree with Rhalius...  and welcome from Amsterdam too! Well, three people in this topic from Amsterdam... what does it say about this city (or this topic ;)). My Playmobil is all sorted out in boxes so I can easely find everything I need for a set up for my comic (The Story of Randolph in the story telling area). Unfortunately, I don't have a room for my own so have to tidy up afterwards, lack of space and a two year old daughter who has her own plans with the klickies are the reason for that. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy... 8}

Kind regards, Lynx

I've just been tucking new purchases among my childhood collection and hoping nobody notices. I had the pretzel seller out one day, and my sister said, "Oh, you found your leprechaun." She is apparently going under the impression that he's been part of the collection for 15+ years. I thought it best not to explain to her that neither he nor any fat green klicky nor any tricycle was part of my childhood collection. He's only been here a couple months.  :shhhh:

You have nothing to be embarrassed about.  I started rebuilding my collection when I was in my late 20s. :)

A great re-introductory thread :D  (and re-welcome! lol)
I like the way you've opened up discussion about whether we keep our Playmo secret or not - and have really enjoyed reading everyone else's comments.
As for me - close friends and family know about my Playmo (and yep, this REALLY helps with Christmas and Birthday ideas!) and work colleagues don't :D  I feel a little ambivalent about sharing it with people in general, and have no idea how they would react, but it's never stopped me from buying it and enjoying it! :D

Theres always people that wont understand it, and they are entitled to that. People worrying about it being a waste of money, sure thats fine too. They'd be wasting their money on something themselves as well probably in your eyes.

The thing that is the problem, is people who would be so insulting to make fun of you because of your hobby, calling it childish or such. But people who do such things, tend to be very insecure themselves and "need" to make fun of what they percieve to be a weakness of others in order to feel better about themselves.
I wouldnt be surprised if some of the most vocal people like that would secretly be jalous of the hobby, but are affraid to admit it.

Thank you all so much!! I very much enjoyed reading about your experiences and opinions.  :)

About five months ago, I started dating a new guy. In the beginning I kept my hobbies a secret, I wasn't sure how to tell him about it. But one night I had a very nice dream about a store that only sold playmobil and I had a lot of money to spend and so I bought loads of playmobil in my dream. I woke up smiling and happy and simply had to tell my boyfriend about the nice dream I had. Of course he thought it wasn't a problem at all and was just curious about my collection and wanted to see my playmobil. After two weeks I received a package... and guess what: my boyfriend bought me playmobil!! He bought me a special (the guy who is baking a pizza) and he bought me a set with figures from the dutch tradition that's called 'Sinterklaas' that we celebrate in December.

So in the end, I didn't need to worry at all. He even mentioned that my hobbies come in handy, it will be very easy for him to buy me presents  So thanks again for your stories, it was helpful.

Now that's a great way to look at it! Glad to hear he is supportive of your hobby, not everyone finds that support.

Hello viviana! welcome from Buenos Aires!

I can understand what you are talking about. In fact a lot us surely do, and have been through the same experiences. So it's totally normal. Next time just leave a couple of your favorite clickies out and about and you won't miss them so much.  :)

Heej Viviana, welcome back from Antwerp

It's reassuring to see others dealing with the same dilemma's  :)
I'd never tell people from work, but my close family and good friends know - and don't really care. They'll raise an eyebrow when the living room is covered with PM, but they've never been hateful about it or anything.

And I wouldn't give it up for the world.

I got my boyfriend into Playmobil though, never thought that would happen!   ;D

I got my husband into playmobil, too, and it's great! Now it's a hobby we enjoy together. Of course it wasn't too much of a leap, he was collecting legos before I started collecting PM as an adult.

Thank you skywalker for your welcoming words!

and yes, you are right. it doesn't really matter what people think about you, what really counts is the opinions of your loved ones. My boyfriend always helps me building new playmo (and likes it) and even some of my friends buy me playmo. I did have a time where I paused for a little bit with my collecting activities, but I missed it so I started buying new things again. But now, playmo is here to stay!
