Obviously I have some idea myself but I would like to hear from other people out there in other places what they think is rare.
There are two ways to think about rarity - how many were made, and how hard to get they are.
There are quite a few animal variations that were only in one set. The actual molds have mostly been used in multiple sets, perhaps with color changes. The oldest animals can be the hardest to get, even though many of them were made.
I actually think at this point I would put some of the older 1-2-3 animals towards the top of the rare list. A number have been very hard for me to find.
So what do you all think about this topic? I will post a list of animals that I believe have only been in one set later.
-
Seems to me the brown eagle is rather rare, though I think it was in more than one set. Also the dark green regular birds. The green caiman has only been in one (rather expensive) set, though it's a still available set. And any of the brightly colored animals from the free game series that are not recent -- kittens, frogs, etc. The recent ones like koalas are not hard to find, but those have definitely only been in one set. And there's certain dogs that are pretty rare.
-
The mountain goat is my best guess. What do I win?
i think we discussed this some time ago, maybe last year?
-
I think the mountain goats are pretty rare, as far as I know they were only in the rescue set. Of course I think the mountie horses are, like you said allready, one of the rarest animals. The albino elephant is second, I guess. I don't know anything about 123 playmobil, so I can't tell anything about the rareties...
The new hammerhead shark and okapi are (going to be) on the marked, but it feels to me like they are extreemly rare :)

Off the top of my head other rare ones -
Red Nessie
White Shark
Black Panther Kitten
Baby Seal in white
Polar bears with painted eyes, dolphin baby with painted eyes
Both Orange Corals
Most of the old style Indian horses
The old style colts in grey and both spotted versions, and some of the painted saddle ones as well
1-2-3 Fish in green
Most of the Color animals, especially the orange color tiger
As Bonnie said, the colored animals from earlier game sets. Also the animals that have only been in release at the Funpark - my favorite being the glow in the dark lobster.
non-standard rarities:
white mouse
Deinonychus with yellow claws
Purple and white cow
-
Is there a black panter KITTEN :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
And aww, I saw the white seal baby and the white shark for sale, but I didn't buy them...
-
I think Antex have always made their polar bears with paited eyes so maybe I can get you some if you want Tim.

-
To me the white elephant would be the rarest, but I don't know much about the subject.
Also maybe the old type of sheep... ???
-
There are colts with painted saddles? There are colts with saddles? :o
Will have to investigate these:
Black Panther Kitten
Baby Seal in white
dolphin baby with painted eyes
(see what you've done? my wallet is screaming murder already!)
Still looking for the white shark, and some of the color animas and funpark animasl... :(
-
need some advise from you all:
7, 80 euro isn't much money for the white shark+white baby seel+ white mouse+glow in the dark lobster, right?
And can I ask this here or is there another sub-PlaymoFriends for these questions? Sorry and tell me if I'm in the wrong place... :-\

I actually have quite a few of these! The polar bear with painted eyes, I think the baby dolphin with pained eyes, some of the old indian horses, and several color animals including the orange tiger. I didn't realise they were rare, but now that you mention it, I guess they are. The red nessie must definitely be very rare!

There is the Shopping and Auctions section if you want to use that. :)

I don't believe she can see that section yet.

I wasn't sure about that. I checked the PFZ area and saw the sticky there, but I forgot whether it applied to that section also when I didn't see a similar sticky there.

Funny you should mention the white mouse, Tim:
There was a Playmo exhibition in Mechelen (Belgium) in the toy museum a few years ago. Didn't see anything quite as impressive as we can see here, but there was one thing I really liked: a machine spitting out white mice!
Just to show how it is done, I guess. The pile of mice was just there for the visitors: you were allowed to take some home (I guess mostly children were interested) :)
I have no idea which animals are rarest. Colour animals that are still white would be my best guess too, since they're old and a lot of those sets got painted on. I have (badly) a painted dog and a few painted horses
-
Well, considering what's been said about these, I'd say it's a bargain!
-
I want white mice! *loves rodents* A white mouse machine sounds awesome!
I have no idea which animals are rare. I haven't seen many of the ones listed already.

I'd buy them too, in a hurry :-)
-
Thank you for the advise :), and no, I can't see that section yet...
I also saw a tiger color in orange/yellow. I think that might belong to the rare animals, doesn't it?
I personaly don't think the polarbears with the black eyes aren't that rare, I see them a lot. Same with the spotted colts. I never bought them, but now I'm seriously considdering it! Oh no, there goes my wallet again

How long the sets were available is a factor too of course.
Sorry I meant painted saddle old style horses like the Cavalry one

@Tiermann: From which sets are these rare animals? Are they customs? ??? ???
-
I would say that the glow in the dark lobster is one of the rarest and strangest animals, is it an animal ?
-
hi,
Are there differences in the rarety of animals when you are in different places?
Because I can find some of those "super rare animals" easily in Holland, like the white baby tiger, spotted an grey colts, polarbears with black eyes and white mouse... And right now I spotted the white shark, color tiger & zebra, white baby seel and glow in the dark lobster, but when I look at ebay there are almost none? :hmm:

I think you answered your own question
In the US you would have a hard time finding a white mouse as the machine never will or has been here. It was never, from what I remember, in a set but only a promotional give away in Europe
There is a much bigger used market in Europe and overall distribution is much larger
-
I have three white mice because Gis sent them to me as a gift a while back. They're very treasured items in my collection! Super rare here.
The glow-in-the-dark lobster is strange indeed, I didn't know it existed!
@Tiermann: From which sets are these rare animals? Are they customs? ??? ???
Of course not! :hmm: We're talking about rare animals, not customs.
-
Yes, all of these are regular release except for the three non-standard rarities I mentioned
white mouse - only available at the Speyer exhibition a few years ago as has been mentioned
Deinonychus with yellow claws - a variant, as most were released with unpainted claws
Purple and white cow - from the factory but never in a set, a factory test or production error that escaped to the wider world. Policy is that things like this are destroyed at the factory rather than sold to the public.
At the Zirndorf Funpark there is a feature of large clamshells with water flowing out of them and in the water there are small parts that you can collect. These have mostly been items released only at the Funpark and not in regular sets. They have changed over time
In 2005 they included the animals in this photo, thanks to Nick and Claire for sending them to me
(http://animobil.info/wit-icons/funparkshellplus.jpg)
That is where the glow in the dark lobster is from. Also you see a light blue and a brick red lobster, also both unique to this. A few of the other animals are unique to this grouping while others have been released in sets at some point. These are probably available in the secondary market in Europe but very rarely seen in the Americas. There were also pieces of wood and shoes I believe.
When I went in 2011 the Funpark had a different grouping, that was also sold in the shop in a bag with one of each. This photo is that group.
I have no idea if there have been any others at a time between these groups. I suspect not as I remember it being mentioned as an event when the second batch first appeared. If anyone does know of other animals we would all love to hear about them.

This white dog from 5055 set seems to be very very rare and hard to find!

Wich one do you mean? The newfoundland mountain dogs in white?
and Tierman, are animals with mistakes (error-animals  ) immediately very rare and good for collectors?
Or are they just valueless (is that a word?) ?
Hmm... :hmm: now it sounds like I only want to make money out of it, but I was just wondering afer I saw a few error- animals.
I also think the brown new bull is a little rare, when you think he was (as far as I know) only in one set.

I also have some of these thanks to Gis! They are really neat, nice to have and I have found many uses for them.
-
I think it will vary among collectors. Some have no interest in variations at all, or in errors. Others place a high value on unique animals.
When it's a recent release and still available from DS then I don't count it as rare. But, sometimes you can see the rare coming. For instance the ones in my Endangered Animal Species (http://animobil.info/animoblog/?p=15) blog post back in February. I wouldn't count the all brown bull in this group yet since it's in production and may show up again. But the second style of horses will have some rarities in the future now that they have been basically eliminated from production.
The white Newfoundland dog is one of the rarest dogs probably, along with the plain brown version. I'm not surprised you are having trouble coming up with one George.
-
Hey, I just saw a Newfoundland completely in creme color, no spots. I didn't see it animobil? maybe rare too?
-
It's probably a discolored white one.

Hm, it looks almost like an unprinted version of the spotted brown one. Where are you finding these, if you don't mind my asking?
-
I think that one is missing the printing process

It's a dutch playmobil webshop with mostly secondhanded Playmobil. I absolutely love it! It is going stop, so these are almost the last items. They alo have the white shark, white newfoundlander, white mouse and more. I just ordered some. Do you want the adress of the website?

Yes please ;)

here:
http://www.hobbyshop-nl.tk/
It is all in dutch, but this is how it works:
you mail them ("e-mail ons") the number of the set/photo and the letter of the item on the picture you want, in English would be the best, I think. (google translate may help you too with the dutch translations of all the sections, "dierentuindieren" = zoo animals "boerderij dieren"=farm animals)
PlaymoZoo
-
Thanks, will look into it ;)
-
Oh and important: they only take orders of more than 7,50 euro, not counting the shippings! when under an item stands 'uitverkocht/verkocht" means it isn't available anymore.
-
Thanks for your help PlaymoZoo - waiting for the package now - I'll post to let everyone know how it goes..
-
Good to hear :) When I ordered the white shark, I wanted two of them, but one already was ordered by someone from abroad. I think I have an idea who that is... :sherlock:
-
My package arrived yesterday, all in order :)
Thanks a gazillion PlaymoZoo! :)
(I did get a white shark - I showed RESTRAINT :o - only one of each animal I wanted... we have a bunch of sharks, but we didn't have this one, and ordering via ds produced a grey one - one we didn't have yet, but wasn't white, so we're very happy with him!)
-
I've seen the beige spotless Newfoundland elsewhere too. I'm beginning to wonder if it wasn't a mistake. I'm currently looking for the brown one.
-
I also saw this white cat on ebay. Never seen it before, and he wasn't on animobil ??? ???:

This site is great. Thanks!!
Do they ship to hong kong?? Do you know how to estimate the shipping?? I see the moose add on which I have been longing for.....
-
You can allways email them in English, by clicking the blue button "e-mail ons". They will know, but They will probably ship to Hong Kong, I think. If you have any questions, I may be able to help you ;)

Another rare animal that I don't think has been mentioned yet is the all brown German shepherd dog that was released with the Germany-exclusive set here:
http://playmodb.org/setpics/4088.jpg
I only got one because a very kind person in Germany ordered one (as well as his common black and orange partner and their blue coats) from PM Direct Service and then he shipped them to me overseas. That brown one is the star of my PM German shepherd collection.
He looks like he will be being released again in one of the brand new Alpine rescue sets which means that he should be available in America finally and become MUCH more common.
http://playmodb.org/setpics/5427.jpg
I still plan on ordering myself one or two more of them from DS when they come out though! Can never have too many handsome PM dogs, 'specially if they're one of the less common ones! ;D
-
A great group of dogs, I do like that brown German Shepherd
BTW Nice to see you back here SubaruWolf

-
Thank you, skypurr! I love my PM German shepherds!!
Also, I posted pics for you of the bridge planks you sent me. :)
-
I'll have to order one of those dogs too!
Great pic :)
-
Yes I've been fortunate to have one of those. Does your have painted eyes and nose? Mine doesn't so I've been assuming the new one will have a different part number. Do you happen to know if yours is 30 65 2302?
-
Yes, mine is number 30 65 2302. He arrived with the same brown eyes and nose as the one you have on your website but he looked so bland all brown and I very carefully blackened his eyes and nose myself.
I'm very curious to see if the new brown shepherd will be distributed with eyes and nose made of a black plastic as they did with the white shepherds. :)
-
Obviously I have some idea myself but I would like to hear from other people out there in other places what they think is rare.
The forgotten skunks!!! Nobody talks about them. It was very difficult for me to get them new in box because at that time Playmobil in Mexico was in one of those dark periods when they did not have presence here. The set is 3226. One Skunk appeared also in treehouse set 4057. Recently, in western set 5250 and soon in the fairies set 5447:
http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/your_set_list.pl?setlist=3226%0D%0A4057%0D%0A5250%0D%0A5447
-
That's true! It took me a long time to get skunks, because I went back to collecting after the original set and the treehouse. I think I still only have three.
-
Two weeks ago I bought my first gnu/ wildebeast. Sometimes I find one on eBay, mostly >8 euro. For an animal which forms groups up to one million individuals, it will be expensive to make a realistic diorama of African wildlife with. 8} Six months ago I found an ibex, paid too much for it because it will re-appear in the new Mountain sets 8}
