Title: A chrome knight
Post by: Wolf Knight on August 06, 2012, 08:25:31
...or maybe two

I've been planning to do this for a long time now, so I got up one morning two weekends ago and start spraying at the first one, seperate parts etc, and let it for a whole day to dry... Still the result was not satisfying, because I discovered chrome needs a lot longer to dry and become stable on the part... thus the finger marks and discoloured areas.

So, here is the first one:

and here is the second one:

I let the second one dry for a good of seven days before I put all the parts togeher, so that I could avoid any marks or undried areas that could result in finger marks and discolouring.

They both look good at first sight, but close up you can see the difference.  The second one looks magnificent.

Are you going to produce a whole army of them?

They both look fantastic, Panos! So nice and shiny. The marks on the first one don't look too bad. I wouldn't have noticed if you didn't point it out.

The second one does indeed look much better, but the first one just seems like it has seen action and took a few hits before being put on display.

The fingerprints just make it look like the armor took a blow there.  :)

Glad you liked them, guys  :)

Are you going to produce a whole army of them?

Nope, maybe a few more with different armour, helms and weapons for display, or for diorama deco.

They look magnificient!

It reminds me btw I have to try something simillar, applying a very thin layer of silver or aluminium.

Splendid!  8-)

Too bad about the marks on the 1st one, but one can't (learn to) make an omelet without breaking eggs  ;)

Panos you could use the marks to make them look like rust!
you can use the dry brush technique. it's very simple. in a hard hair brush take some rust color paint (no water). clean the brush on a paper cloth till it is almost clean. then pass the brush very softly on the marks. the relieved marks will get the little paint the brush has and the rest will still look chromed.  :)

Those look great. I don' know why I hadn't considered doing this myself. I've painted parts silver before for my Snow Queen diorama. I use a silver spray paint and it dries in a few hours. For small parts I attach the part to a stick with glue or green tacky stuff.

nice chromed knights Panos, they look great. You can see how you learned quite a lot when you compare the two and you seem to have learned fast, the second one looks very good. Did you do one big coat and let it stand for 7 days or did you do many thin coats and let some time in between?

I like your idea of haveing diffrent armor for a museum. The origonal chromed knight was only one style. Geobra released a few chromed featured knights but never the whole thing including the face.

Have you compared your paint next to a factory chromed knight? I was wondering if you could paint only the parts that were missing and blend them in. The chrome plating Geobra uses is so nice looking but limited.

Thank you Tim, Justin, Ras! Although I first experimented with Nuremberg chrome armour back in 2010: http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=4522.0 (unfortunately the pics are not visible any more for some reason  ??? I'll try uploading them again...) I believe Gaston has made a much better work with his statues last year: http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=7070.msg116382#msg116382

Anyways, to answer Rasputin's questions, I sprayed one thick layer of paint and let it be for seven days. It would be much better if I sprayed several thin layers within a day, but I wanted to conduct my experiment as quickly as I could. I knew problems like paint drying too late and fingertip marks would be a result if I did not let it dry for too long, from chroming the Nuremberg armour back in 2010. But I was anxious to finish. Moreover, I think I was not in the mood to have my mind on spraying several layers within the day, thus the single thick one, to get on with it as soon as possible. As for which of the two is more shiny ( ;D you can laugh now guys   ) i recall the original playmobil paint was a more shiny one than the spray paint I use.

Great work Panos!!!
I had the same results with my first try too! i was too anxious too assemble the klicky.
Try to use a water based varnish to keep your chrome shinny.Your hands can destroy the paint!
I have painted all my shinnimg parts with this varnish. It is very soft for the colours and the stickers. You can use it in Arnaud transfers too!If you choose the gloss one you add an extra shining!

I wish we can have some of Gaston's chrome paint but it is impossible for him  to send it here!
Maybe we can invite him to spend a summer with us here in Greece!!!

I would love some such chromed knights for my halls of Krull .... they just  look superb sire , this is the 10th time i look upon those sir !!! Just superb !!!!

At the moment my halls of Krull are only decorarated with crowns of conquered kingdoms, flags and treasure boxes. god, a dozen of such chromed knights would make a fine addition. I will ask you sir for some details and advice to make 12 identical chromed knights ....

Love the chrome.. just classic!

I heard once that you can take a food dehydrator and leave the bottom rack and then take the upper layers and cut out the centers. Once a part is painted you just close it up and turn it on. Now it has warm air gently "blowing" over the part helping it to dry. Kinda like a paint booth for real cars and trucks. Just a idea I once came across years ago. Now that I'm into PM, I will have a go at it. Best of luck and keep up the customs!
