is it vintage? what's it normally go for?ish

That's without a doubt the much praised 3666. :)

oh my.... someone in my state is selling it for $40 and claims it is a "full set." It is about 2 hours away from me. But, being it is the end of the month, I'm short on cash unless I put off some other bill..... but, assuming it is structurally complete, that would be an awesome deal methinks.
-
If it truly is a full set that is a very amazing deal, I got mine for a hundred euros.
But if this is the only picture the seller is showing, I'd be suspicious about how complete it is though, and the condition it may be in. Just seems to me that there might be a reason that hes only showing a picture of the manual and not the actual castle.

There is one other pic in his listing:

but I am not familiar enough with the castle to be able to surmise if that is most of it or not.
-
Not sure how deep that box is, but judging from the pointed roofs and those stairs standing up right in the box I'd imagine its enough to hold the entire castle so its a good buy.
Just don't count on the clickies, furniture and other accesoires being included though, since I cant spot any of that on this picture aside from the shields on the drawbridge.
-
That seems like a good deal to me if the pieces aren't smashed or broken. ;)

Just as I was 5 mins away from arriving to pick up the set, I get a call from the seller who told me she can't sell it to me anymore because her daughter "found out" and was upset that her mom was selling it. So she called the deal off!
Oh well! Had I not been late, actually, I may have gotten away with it, lol, but at least she wasn't left with an unhappy daughter, so at least the day was saved, in a way.

Ah, that would have been terrible for the daughter, so I wouldn't feel bad if I were you, mate! ;)

Aw, she was a nice mom to call off the deal! Was it a grown-up daughter, I wonder, considering the age of this set? It seems a lot of people are too emotionally attached to their childhood playmo to even consider getting rid of it. I know I was, even during my teenage years when I would never have been caught playing with toys!

oh too bad the deal fell through. I must say that Kids will say that about anything, even junk toys from junk food restaurants ;)
-
I'm guessing it was an adult kid. You don't know how many times I've heard of stories where parents decided to clean out their adult kids' rooms after they moved away and get rid of all their old toys, only for the adult kid to come back home and wonder where all their stuff went because they never wanted to part with them, including old toys their parents probably didn't realize had become collectibles.
I've come across a few deals where the item was too good of a deal (the person didn't know what it was) and my conscience wouldn't let me buy it without telling them they were sitting on a gold mine. IN this case I didn't realize this was the famous 3666 (I thought I had one, but apparently it's a different castle than I thought all along! now I have to find out what castle I actually have!), but if the person doesn't really care about it, I couldn't resist the $40 deal (I looked it up on ebay though, and saw that depending on completeness it recently sold between $53 to around $90). So $40 didn't seem to far off to me (also considering they told me it may be missing some walls, possibly) and had no accessories or clickies included).
Sadly though, I now want this castle some other way. and i Must find out what castle I actually had all this time (the steck one that I cannibalized to add to my knights kingdom castle). Sorry, I'm a castle noob.

It's best to look at the distinguishing features of your castle then.
The battlements can tell you if its an old or new castle, and the gates might tell you the rest.
-
or just show us a picture in here and I am confident it will get figured out in record time ;D
-
did an image search on google... apparently mine is a 3667
-
That's also a very nice castle, probably often overlooked since it was released at the same time as the 3666 and has less features.
It's more a fort than really a place for clickies to live in, but it sure comes with enough weaponry and brave clickies to defend it.
These days they pretty much only have sets of this type with just soldiers/knights and a castle but I kind of like these soldiers better. It really looks like a balanced little garrison with a captain, three infantry soldiers and an archer.
I always did wonder though why some lion sets had a black and yellow flag and others had red and white like this castle.
